After 3 years away, the The Great House is still a great restaurant....3 course lunch with a few surprises, attentative staff and a beautiful restaurant...Good variety of food and wine choices ..highly recommended a visit

Fantastic lunch

The Great House was always our ‘go to’ restaurant for special occasions but something has changed! Our last evening meal was the tasting menu which we didn’t enjoy and now find that it is the only option for an evening dinner at the Great House. So this time we decided to go at lunchtime for the lunchtime menu but although the ambience and service is still first class the food is just not hitting the spot any more - choices limited and not to our taste and quality inconsistent - my pork was tough and not enjoyable. Dessert was fabulous though - but I’m afraid at these prices it just has to be better. Sorry!

Birthday lunch

We stayed overnight and had a beautiful room with a sitting area to have some pre-dinner drinks from the mini bar. The restaurant dining room is tastefully decorated and feels sophisticated. The staff were excellent from the initial welcome and throughout the dinner.

It was a fixed menu for the evening we stayed and we had a wine flight. The first course, scallops with beetroot didn’t quite work, the scallops were over powered and the rose champagne with the course was very sweet and really didn’t go well, defeating the point of having the wine flight (although good value at £38 each compared to other restaurants we’ve been to). One of the waiters said it was chosen as it was valentine’s night; I’d rather it was chosen to go with that course.
A 2nd dish, the fish dish (brill) was tasted wonderful, except the orange blob on the top was very spicy (which we don’t normally mind), overpowering the more delicate flavours – and lucky me, I had two blobs of it on my fish. We did let the waiter know these comments; also you can’t cut the potato and leek very well with a fish knife. I know its fine dining but I probably wouldn’t have worried if it was a normal knife for that course.

The rest of the courses were good, especially the beef, pre desert and desert dishes were excellent.  The petite fours were not our favourite. Given the cost, charging anything extra for some poached eggs at breakfast is over the top. I’d probably go again but stick to a bottle of wine and avoid an overnight stay to make the cost more reasonable.

A sophsiticated restaurant, fab rooms.

Eye wateringue expensive. Delicious dinner, great and reasonable wine list, beautiful location. However, freezing cold room, freezing cold breakfast room, cold coffee, cold croissant, cold baguette. £6 supplement on eye watering cost for a cooked breakfast. If I’m paying this much money I expect better.

Overpriced, beautiful, freezing

I had lunch here today with friends but we’re very disappointed.
There appeared to a set menu only.
The portions were very small, my main course of venison was a starter size portion. The dessert was the highlight and was more substantial.
The dishes were beautifully garnished/decorated but there was no substance to them.
I don’t think we’ll visit again

Disappointing!

Having read such great reviews I booked a gourmet overnighter, choosing to stay in Montmartre bedroom. We were not disappointed.
Welcomed at check-in. After being shown to our room (top floor), we were brought a jug of fresh milk for our hot beverages.  Comfortable spacious room and bathroom (good shower), all good quality including bed linen which is why I was surprised that the dressing gowns were of such nasty synthetic material. I did make a comment on departure so it would be interesting if they change in due course.
We appreciated the lovely and generous 'complimentary' touches - Nespresso machine/ choice of teas,, bowl plenty fresh fruit, decanter of sherry, bottled water, quality toiletries good size. 
Dinner was excellent - delicious, beautifully presented, generous, great service. It would have been nice to have a pre dinner drink (with the canapés they serve when seated)  in next door room/ bar  but it was set up with a table.. maybe just temporary.
Breakfast next morning was also special. Service rather slow (but charming so forgivable) but maybe because of staffing, after all we were only 4 tables.

I would give 10/10 for every aspect including that it is well priced so we will definitely return!

Perfect gourmet overnighter!

A brilliant birthday- all the staff are both professional and personable and made for a special birthday celebration. The whole meal was amazing- delicious food from the kitchen (thank you to all) and great wines. Do try this restaurant because you will love it! A super place to eat.

70th Birthday celebration

We were so looking forward to our first real break away from home for many months and as the days passed our anticipation mounted. We have to be brutally honest and say that in absolutely every respect our expectations were completely blown away. The hardware is a given; Lavenham is a beautiful town and The Great House sits in the heart of its glory but the warmth of our welcome, the comfort of the room Montmartre and the rose sipped in the shelter of the courtyard enabled the stresses of the past few months to slip away. Covid precautions were observed but not intrusive and in due course we descended for our first dinner. It simply would be impossible to fault the comfort of the dining room, attentiveness of the staff (who were at all times friendly without ever being intrusive) and quality of the food and wine with skill and enterprise on full display in the kitchen. All of this paled, however, when compared to the tasting menu culmination of our stay and shutting our eyes several days since returning it is still possible to conjure the tastes of the courses and the spectacular and artfully chosen wines with which they were paired. Our stay was relaxing, refreshing and enjoyable; we can only wish the enterprise the sucess that they all strive so hard to achieve and record our thanks for our post-lockdown pleasure.

Lockdown release

We didn’t know what to expect but WOW what a surprise, we had the 6 course degustation with wine paring which was delightful as each course was a surprise and a wonderful assault on the taste buds. The staff were a delight as every one of them were lovely and so knowledgeable about the food and wine and if they didn’t know they would ask for you.
This is the kind of place where you can get your best clothes on and enjoy the experience and feel right at home, it was a real treat and we loved it. So thank you The Great House for a lovely night out somewhere special xx

Great night out at a Great House!

Our first meal at the Great House after 6 months and they are back better than ever. Inventive menu, quality ingredients and expertly cooked and presented. Just sublime.
The staff are all excellent, efficient and welcoming. The most perfect evening to welcome us back after lockdown. Just when you think they cannot get any better, they do. It's time for that star.
