I wanted to leave this as I don’t think the previous reviews were very fair. Me and my family (2 kids 6&9) just returned from a long weekend stay here. No it is not the height of luxury but In honestly I did not assume it would be when I booked. We stayed in the dovecote and it was exactly as I imagined it would be, full of character and harm but on the small side as cottages usually are. The bed sheets and linen were all perfectly clean and the cottage itself was spotless when we arrived. Yes there was a slight smell of damp as the other reviews have mentioned however this is pretty standard for properties of this age. We had a very warm greeting from the owner and we’re made to feel very welcome. We didn’t have the opportunity to eat at the Stonemill restaurant but it looked very busy and everyone seemed very happy when we passed it! My kids loved the rural experience and getting the chance to see chickens too. The kitchen was well equipped for everything we needed however we ate out most nights so really only used it for breakfast. All in all I would say that it was priced well for what it was- if you want a more luxurious stay then check in to a hotel. Would I stay again- probably not but purely because I do like a bit of luxury and not because there was anything wrong with the cottages they were beautiful.

Honest review

Stayed here 28th September for 5 nights on business with a colleague. House was cold first day but soon warmed up the next . Rooms and beds ok shower very small and unpredictable.
The oven was very dated and took ages to warm up .
General good stay but can’t get my head around paying for a meter every day £5 on top of the £750 we paid for the time there it’s unheard of and very greedy. Lovely area for piece  and quite and not far from town 
But if you do stay just make sure you take some warm cloths and £££ coins

September 28th stay 2021

Had made a 4 night booking through Hoseasons then almost immediately notified by the owner on a very rude and abrupt phone call that my booking was cancelled because they no longer want to use them as a booking provider. I was told it was then my responsibility to contact Hoseaons and get a refund (which I have had).

The properties are now back on Hoseasons at double the price.

Appalling customer service. Be sure to read all the reviews because this kind of service isn't an isolated incident.

Abrupt cancellation

Booked this place, family and children very excited as not been away for a while due to Covid.  Paid through Hoseasons then owner quite happily cancelled us for someone else.  Should be a law against it.  Despicable!

BE CAREFUL - GAZUMPED!!

If you are prevented from staying at a holiday cottage because of a COVID lockdown you are entitled to a REFUND as the contract will have been “frustrated” and incapable of being performed. Check out official guidance if you need to on gov.uk. 

So did Steppes Farm Cottages give us a refund when it happened to us? No. 

It was our 50th anniversary and we had booked at our favourite restaurant - the associated Stonemill. Probably run by the same people. Lovely place. We live not too far away, visit on special occasions and we were very much looking forward to a nice bottle of wine and maybe a malt or something without the need to drive home. 

We were in a local lockdown area and couldn't travel outside our county area because it's illegal to do so. We hoped that it would be lifted in time but when it was obvious it wasn't likely we phoned to let Steppes know.  

We were offered the possibility of a future booking but obviously that wouldn’t coincide with our 50th anniversary.  I asked for a refund as they took full payment when we booked months before.  

Their first response was that we could still stay and just quarantine for 14 days on returning home.   That's not the case and it would have been illegal for us to do so. 

Next it was suggested that we had not booked directly with Steppes and that we should go to whoever we had booked with. They use “bookings booster” presumably to do just that but checking back we found that we only dealt directly with Steppes. They may use “bookings booster”to facilitate bookings on their website but there's no connection to us at all.  They use other booking sites but we did everything directly with them. 

I asked again for a refund and was told in a very unpleasant way that I would not get one.  If that was the case I said we would not book with Steppes again. I was accused of threatening them - of what I've no idea.   I was told not to bother them further and ask for a refund from my credit card company instead. 

We do hope to continue using the Stonemill as it’s an excellent place but I'm sorry to say we will not consider or recommend a Steppes Farm cottage ever again. 

Steppes farm will obviously be £260 to the good and that doesn’t seem fair. They were certainly not going to do what official guidance says , exactly the opposite I think,  annoying as it is.

We will be trying Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act for a refund from the credit card company.  Wish us luck.

COVID lockdown issues

My friend & I recently had a weeks stay in The Dovecote.
A cosy,comfortable & well equipped cottage.
The log burner was a bonus on cool nights. 
Great restaurant(The Stonemill) on site too.
Only downside was that WiFi connection wasn’t accessible. (We managed with mobile phone access)


Very Cosy Cottage 

Gifted a "Sleepover" offer at Xmas from our family  for 1x night stay to include onsite Restaurant meal and continental breakfast hamper.

We saw no evidence of the negative comments posted on this site previously. Cottages extremely comfy, warm and spotless ,no musty smells and no electric charge for the time we were there. Hand soap and shower gels provided and a welcome tray ready on arrival with milk in fridge!  Hosts hospitable ,welcoming and went out of their way to help  and all staff cheerful and polite.
Restaurant itself within a few steps across the courtyard and had character and a relaxed  ambiance. The   meal was outstanding and such a bonus not to drive home-more glasses of top class wines could be consumed !

In the morning a bountiful breakfast hamper was fulfilling and charmingly presented in a wicker hamper with most of the  products home produced .

All in all everything first class, and thoroughly recommended 

Treat yourself and have a marvellous mini break!!

Ignore all the negative reviews!

We had a cottage here for a night as we wanted to explore the forest of dean. Have to say the cottage itself is really nice and the way it's done has a really nice Victorian feel to it. The location itself is also good as it is away from the village and the host lives nearby so can get hold of them really easily. The host also really friendly and welcoming. Forest is a bit of a drive but worth it. The only issue is the internet and mobile network really bad but overall definitely recomend it. 

Great value for money 

Let's get this straight from the off ... the wifi is questionable...middle of nowhere and as far as paying for the electricity,  we'll say no more.

Now the plus. Creeps under your skin. The cottages feel like a comforting mother, on this occasion , dare I say, not what we were expecting but just what we needed . Family gathering of 12. Mixture of adults and kids . Lovely beds and must say bedding, kitchens were well equipped and the log burner added a lovely feel to the whole stay . 48 hours to quieten the mind ... just enough. 

So overall not modern faceless slick type of stay but something with a bit more feeling .

Just what we needed

22 members of our family were accommodated in 6 "cottage-like properties, in their individual family units. Very clean, comfortably furnished and the kitchens  adequately equipped, though not up-to date. We too found them musty on entering but after airing and warming the atmosphere cleared quickly. Rustic comfort. Made very welcome by the owners, although one needed to be tolerant at first of the husband's directness. He turned out to be well informed and helpful. Two improvements would ,for us, have given Stepps Farm 5 stars. Nowadays we would not expect to have to use a coin box for electricity. A small extra charge per day would be more acceptable, included in the rent. 3 families thought the mattresses on the double beds in their unit were overdue for replacement. A huge bonus on the site was the restaurant run by the owner's daughter and husband. It really deserves its accolades. We will go there again.
