Perfectly located to walk to shops, pubs and restaurants.  Room was lovely and in keeping with the age of the property.   Great for a short stay; comfy bed and a good shower.  A very stylish home and helpful host.

Great location.  Friendly host

On arrival we let ourselves in via a key safe and found that the host had kindly placed some prosecco and a card in our bedroom for our 40th wedding anniversary which was a lovely thought. However, we had mixed feelings about staying here. We only saw the host once when we called him, having had an issue with water spilling on the floor (which was entirely our fault and he kindly sorted out), but it felt more like an airbnb which wasn't the experience we were hoping for. In all fairness, I had missed the fact that it was room only on booking.com but having never having had this occur before in this type of accommodation, even during the pandemic, I had made assumptions. Having a lovely cooked breakfast is so much part of the enjoyment of staying away. The host did say he would bring us breakfast in our bedroom on the day of our ruby wedding anniversary but we didn't really want to have it there. On the plus side, he  provided good information about where we could get breakfast.  The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. It was a good base to get to other parts of Dorchester and parking was available. We also struggled a bit with hair washing as although a hand -held shower was provided, the bath didn't have a screen to stop any water going over the edge. It's a beautiful old property with basic facilities and if you are happy with this then it's a great place to stay.

Quirky place in good location.

Wonderful place to stay and friendly informative host . Beautiful comfortable and clean room with everything you would want. Definately recommend here whenever in Dorchester or surrounding area. Thank you Mark . Hope to see you again in the future !

Fantastic stay

What a great place. Booked it for an overnight stay whilst on business. The whole place is fantastically decorated, appointed and clean. I felt like I was staying in a stately home! Mark the owner, was very friendly and helpful, and the the location is pretty central for all restaurants. I would definitely stay there again when in the area.

Great place to stay

Texted by the owner that he would not be there when we arrived front door & bedroom key in box by the gate. Room not what we booked bathroom couldn't swing a cat in, place shabby & tired had to clean our own room no breakfast waited a year & half for this it was awful he did move us the next day to a better room never even came out when we left to say goodbye. Over priced and sad.

VERY DISAPPOINTING I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT THE OWNER WAS A LIBERTY TAKER BLAMED EVERYTHING ON COVID

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this period house tastefully furnished to its era, lovely clean spacious room. Friendly and professional hosts great value we highly recommend also convenient location to explore Dorset.

Great Stay

We were spending the weekend in Dorchester to visit family,  and found this gem of a place online. Right from the initial booking Mark could not have been more accommodating.  Room with shower available, and vegan breakfast items sought out by Mark.  Room and ensuite were spotless. And massive bed sooooooo  comfortable. Will most definitely stay again. 

(Only criticisms,  the car park needs lighting, and perhaps bath sheets instead of small bath towels would be better. Also if mobility issues are a thing,  rooms are on first floor with no lift,  so be aware)

Very friendly host who goes out of his way to help make your visit comfortable. 

First visit to Dorchester 

After looking for a place to stay near Langham Vineyard, we decided on Dorchester and are very pleased we found Beggar’s Knap. Perfect location in the centre of the town with parking - which is always really useful! Greeted by the friendly owner and showed to our splendid room, with the biggest bed ever! Really comfortable and impressive rooms, we had a lovely stay and would recommend to anyone and everyone. 

Perfect find 

We were travelling to Dorset to look at a house, and instead of taking a day trip, we decided to stay overnight. We contacted the Beggar’s Knap and asked for a room with a bath.
When we arrived, Mark, the host, showed us to our room, which had a bath, and a four poster bed with lovely bedding, and a sofa and chairs...far more than we were expecting. It was great.

The breakfast was good, and in a brilliant room, stuffed with guitars, TV and movie merchandise and rock memorabilia. I could have wandered round for hours looking at all the stuff.

This is all in the context of a lovely house epitomising Victoriana, so if you like beige boutique hotels ( which is weird might not be the place for you.

However, give this place a go; beautiful, quiet, layed back,  quirky, a top host, in the gem that is Dorchester.

We will certainly go back, I encourage anyone to go too.

Last minute visit to Dorchester 

It's a double fronted Victorian house standing at a cross roads close to the High St. It was a warm welcome and very polite. Parking available, but tricky by being uphill and round a corner, not easy at night reversing

The room had a 4 poster bed, and was decorated in an old fashioned way, with heavy curtains and very dark colours, and with Victorian furniture. Certainly in keeping with the age of the building, but not to everyone's taste, I guess

Bathroom was fine but no shower. A problem for some maybe

No breakfast available but a really terrific coffee shop opposite

Credit cards are not accepted and so it's cash or bank transfer. Another small inconvenience
