Oey Chan Dha is perfect for those looking for a rural, out of town retreat, away from the hustle and bustle of central Chiang Mai, but still within a reasonable reach of the town centre.

Located next to a rural temple (we could just about hear the monks chanting in the evening) and in a very rural area (next door's farmer would walk his cows past the hotel entrance each morning, to the fields across the road), you are guaranteed a peaceful time away from it all.

The cabin was enormous for 2 people, but as we were the only 2 guests there when we visited, I'm wondering if we somehow were given a family cabin (? not sure?). Anyway, it was huge and we simple did not use half of the space, spending most of our time on the balcony looking out over the rice fields toward the temple and listening to the birds and occasional monk chanting. Wonderful!

The breakfast was always amazing, (see picture) but the star of the show was the manager, Non Kwan (Apologies if I've spelled that wrong!). Despite our absolute absence of Thai language, she bravely struggled with English and acted as our guide, our driver, our fixer (we wanted to find a specific temple which took some phone calls and some visits to someone who 'might know where it is'...) and our companion, often having meals with us on our day trips (bamboo rafting was a winner!), interpreting our conversations into Thai and back. Nothing was too much trouble. And all done with a smile on her face, constantly checking that we were having a great time. We are very grateful for everything that she did to make our visit so memorable.

The one thing you will want to consider is that being out of town, you are likely to want to get in and out of Chiang Mai some/ most days. A small warning - San Pa Tong is quite a way out of town - too far for tuk tuks and many taxis simply did not know the area well enough to venture out that far. In fact we ended up having to rely on one taxi driver who knew the place, calling when we needed fetching to and from the villa/ town. Not a huge deal, but it did mean that we had to plan our journeys more than we usually do, pre arranging pick up times etc. Also the taxi fare is not expensive, but its not cheap... you will need to price that into your daily activities - you should expect to pay around Bht600 each way for the taxi to/ from town.

Since our taxi driver finished around 8.30pm each day, in order to see some of Chiang Mai's evening life, we transferred to a city centre hotel for our last night there, which allowed us to see Chiang Mai after dark.

If you want away from it all peace and quiet in a back to nature setting, with very personal service, then this is the place for you. Just work out exactly how much of your time will be spent in central Chiang Mai itself before you book, and bear the taxi situation in mind.
