Kilimanjaro Backpackers Hotel - Backpacker

I arrived late in the hostel and found it fully empty. There was even anybody in the reception. Tried to call someone and no reply. Had to wait for another 2 hours and with the help of hotels.com customer service, someone arrived. So definetelly, the security needs to be improved in this hostel. Everything else is good, rooms are basic but comfortable. I stayed in double room and it has mosquito net and fan, the bed is very spacious and comfortable.

This is a good place to stay if you are looking for a good location and a good price. They have breakfast, wifi, shared bathrooms and a luggage room. I paid 7 usd for my own room, which is pretty good. The single rooms are small, but with a fan and some space on the floor for the luggage it was good enough for me.

I really enjoyed my stay at Kilimanjaro Grand Hostel. The private rooms were good and the location (middle of Moshi) was great and convenient. The security seemed to be pretty good. (friends had bags stolen from a near by hostel- but this one had no incidents that I heard about while I was there) 

The food and laundry service was good. 
The phone number listed on Booking.com didn't work- and it was hard to contact the hotel after arriving at JRO, but after all- This is life in Tanzania. 



Mandela, the owner, is the best. When you come, take time to get to know him. He is always available to answer your questions, help you out, and joke around.  The price is lower than you'll find other places in the area.  The rooms are comfortable.  Wifi works, breakfast is lovely, grounds are pretty. Not to mention by staying here you are also contributing to the owner's non-profit that is helping support street kids through education sponsorship in the area. Mandela also organizes great day trips as well as hikes up Kilimanjaro. This is worth mentioning as some places will really rip you off by going through third parties charging you more than necessary.  He's the real deal and will help you out! I wouldn't stay anywhere else if I ever return!

The backpackers place is exactly what I expected from a backpackers place - no frills but comfortable. Breakfast was good and the room, although very small, was comfortable. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone who wants a more luxurious stay, but for a night or two, it's perfect for someone travelling on a budget. The staff were friendly and spoke excellent English, and the security guard was lovely. It's conveniently placed for town. If it takes your fancy, there's also restaurants around the corner which serve Western food like pizzas. Otherwise there's plenty of other local eateries around.

The hostel is located 20 minutes walk from the city centre (though I'm not sure why would you even go there) and has a few rooms and a big garden. The rooms are okay, nothing special but comfortable enough. The stuff is friendly and they help to organize day trips and Kilimanjaro treks if you're interested. The wifi is there, at about the same standard as everywhere in Tanzania - not very fast but it works. The breakfasts are okay as well, definitely not something you'll remember but they serve their purpose. There's no restaurant but the stuff has a few flyers and can order takeout if you want it. Lots of young people there so it can get quite noisy.

Overall there's nothing to complain about and at the price that's around a half of what the hotels charge in Tanzania it's definitely a great place to stay.

Cool place to stay, Mandela (owner) and his team was very nice and helpful too! 

Rooms were fine, the ones with shower in are close by entrance so a bit noisy. 

Place is also close to the town, has a bit slow wifi but definitely great atmosphere with lots of activities which they offer.



The place was good for its price, service was ok

It is very central in Moshi. The dorm are basic and clean. There is a rooftopterrace and a smal sitting area. Peter from the reception is very helpfull and professional. Dormroom is just 6$. Its also a good place for meeting other travelers.

This hostel is very basic but special in it's own way:

Room (#3):  End of the main hall.  Clean and well kept. 3 twin beds (firm yet comfortable) each with a mosquito net.  Nice, pretty soft comforters.  Private bath with weak shower (mostly cold water) in a deep tub (YIKES)!  Be careful getting in and out!  No drinking water provided but available for purchase.  Room lighting is very dim (seems to be common) and not good for reading.

Internet:  STRONG and very reliable (for Tanzania).  Yes, it went up and down on occasion, but WAYYY better than our previous Moshi hotel.

Service:  Amazing.  This is the STRENGTH of this hostel.  These guys go over and above.  Sylvia, Judith and the other lovely girls on the front desk were a delight.  I needed to make a connection with the USA, and Sylvia gave me her personal phone number and worked to make it happen after several other attempts failed (we finally made the connect through skype).  They arranged pickups for dinner, dragged suitcases around, and shared funny stories -- all with equal energy and delightful humor.  It was just fun coming "home" after dinner and having the girls greet us with warm smiles and genuine expressions of happiness that we were back.  

Noise levels:  At first we were concerned the walls were very/too thin when we arrived because the room next to us was quite loud, but must have just been something odd they were doing 'cause we never heard anything again.  The location is off the beaten track, so very quiet and relaxed.  

Location:  A tad out of town, though walkable (15-20 mins?)

Common areas: Very social spaces which encourage chatter among different travelers. A small outdoor porch with a couple of comfortable couches.  A breakfast/dinner area with several smaller and one larger table.  Lighting not very good/strong.  There is also a TV, though it was never turned on.  A nice area for working on computers or chatting or snacking...  Very social.

Food:  no on-site facility.  We ordered dinner from a menu however delivery took almost 2 hours and food was fair at best.  Breakfast is provided including coffee/tea and fruit and then a varied main dish per day.  One day was omelets, the next day pancakes.  Fair, nothing really special. (This is the weakest point for the hostel)

Price:  VERY inexpensive.  Appropriate for the basic setup.  

All in all:  It's a winner.  It IS a hostel, so set your expectations appropriately.  But it's a really GOOD hostel with a staff you will want to adopt and bring home with you.
