We stayed at this place only a single night.  It was the most expensive hotel (per night) that we stayed at during out trip in Taiwan.  And it was a disappointment to us.  
First, the good things.  The pictures of the rooms looked great.  And if you didn’t look close upon entering, the main rooms looked great.  The beds were OK and clean.  The view from the balcony right on the water was great.  The location wasn’t bad (a 700 meter walk along the water from a small village area and pier).  They sold tickets to an electric water shuttle for only 200 NTD that left from the next door dock (we had tickets for a different water shuttle that was farther away).  They stored our luggage before checkin time and after checkout until our departure.  They did give us a ride to the bus station with our luggage upon leaving.

But the look of the room was mostly cosmetic.  The sofa, upon closer inspection, just was NOT nice (old) and I would not sit on it or put anything on it.  There were steps down from the bed area on both sides (towards the bathroom, and towards the balcony…..a real danger at night….this besides the usual step into the bathroom  The screens to the balcony had a few holes in them.  And the bathroom was a disaster.  We found 2 roaches in the bathroom (which, I should add, is right under the kitchen/eating area in the lobby).  One of the worst bathrooms I’ve ever seen; mold and mildew all over the caulking.  The water flow out of the bathroom faucet sprayed all over the place (needed an aerator).  Didn’t want to put anything down on the sinktop because everything felt dirty.  But at least we had a shower enclosure.  From some reviews/comments I later read, other showers were in the middle of the bathroom with no curtain  Ours was in a corner and was fully enclosed by an opaque glass enclosure that desperately needed cleaning. 
 
The bathroom was separated from the main room by an old wooden door with slats that did nothing for noise.  Nothing like the sound of toilets flushing at night.
There was no elevator, and I had to lug 3 large, heavy suitcases through the lobby, then the eating area, out onto a balcony, and then down a flight of stairs to our room (and back up again upon leaving).  

Breakfast was very limited (and after seeing the roaches under the kitchen in our bathroom, I ate as little as possible).  Only served from 7:30 to 9 a.m.   Only 4 warm choices plus porridge.  One choice of bread.  The tables and chairs looked old and not really clean.  Just not appealing or particularly tasty.  We sat outside for breakfast and did enjoy the views being right “on” the lake.

Great location on lake, everything else mostly downhill

This hotel was extremely old and in desperate need to update their room! We stayed in a room underground nearby the deck. The shower was terrible, in the sense that you needed to handhold the shower head. When turning the bathroom fan on , everything smelled like smoke! The room had spider webs on the one of the walls, and there were holes in the bedsheets. We didn’t feel that the room was clean at all. The good thing about this hotel was the location because we were right next to the lake and we could access the lake from the room. However, the room smelled musty from the lake!

Extremely disappointed

Nearby Shueishe Vistors Center, by walk around 15min. This hotel have they own pier too for group tour, you may join them.  We booked family room, the size is big; face to East, you may see the sunrise if good weather. We saw guests fishing from the room, it is  funny.

Nice location

I have stayed at this place more than ten times and I like its location very much, as it is just above the lake! Believe or not, from the balcony of the room, we even fished some small fishes before. There are two buildings and only Bali style rooms are located above water and offer gorgeous view. When you book rooms, remember to book Bali sytle rooms. 
There are communicating doors between the balconies of Bali style rooms, that it is great for a group of people to chat with friends in other rooms and have fun togeter. 
The place is a bit away from the main commercial area, about 10 minutes walk, but walking through the trail is nice. Also, due to its isolation, it is very quiet in the morning and night, very relaxing.

Super location in Sun Moon Lake area

Indeed it was a good 15-20mins walk from the main visitor centre. But in return this hotel offers peace and quiet(away from the busy area), as well as a superb view of the sun moon lake from the room. Very adequate for an overnight stay. In my opinion it would have been an even better experience if not for the lack of initiative or personal touch from the service staff or minsu folks. That said, the breakfast they served was extremely tasty and very well presented.

Nice nautical-themed hotel.

Not exactly worth the stay in terms of $. In terms of $ per night, comparing my night stay in SML (CJ and TP), SFI is the most expensive, yet its not as worth as the other 2 hotels i stayed in CJ and TP. It is more expensive than even my stay in CJ's hanging garden. If you are going to CJ to stay, maybe better to stay at CJ and make day trips to SML. Not much things to do at SML at night. Day time still ok.

About the hotel, facilities ok. Basics all there. Have to top up for dinner. It is tasty and hot esp in the cold weather. The balcony that overlooks the lake is fantastic. As one of the tw blog says, this is one of the nearest you can get to the lake compared to the more expensive hotels. This is also one of the reason why we booked this hotel. We even saw the rainbow across the lake when we first reached there. :)

The room has no heater at all. It is cold in the big room. Even with the double blanket, not electronic blanket, I had a cold thru out the night due to the cold room. Mayb it's near to the lake and the coldness came thru the gaps of balcony window even though we closed tightly.

If i were to visit tw again, I will stay 2 nights at CJ and make day trips to SML rather than stay night there.
