Star Light Hotel decided to cancel our reservation the day before our stay. It was on new year's eve, all the hotels in the south of Sri Lanka were full!
We anticipated this issue by booking our room a month before, but Star Light hotel decided to dump us without giving any explanation. 
We struggled finding another place to stay and had to pay double price for a lower standard. 
The first quality we expect from a hotel is its reliability! We are really disappointed!

Reservation canceled the day before our stay

I have been booked this Hotel by booking.com and were requested to arrange an Airport Transfer  ,which they mentioned available with surcharge. However after 24hrs I haven't hard from the Hotel, so I had to call the hotel and inquire about the airport pickup, They said they didn't know it and its too late to arrange a vehicle. It gives a surprise to me since I have received the automatic booking confirmation from the site. 
My flight was landed to the Bandaranyke International airport around 20:00hrs local time and I had to look for an vehicle to travel Unawatuna. On the way we called the hotel and saying that we were on the way, however when we arrived its totally dark and the gates are locked. The driver was knocking on the door for sometime and someone came and open the gate. 
During checking they said they haven't received any booking request and they said they don't have any contract with booking.com and asking me how they can sell the rooms without knowing them. I felt that its something they need to address to booking.com. Not to me. 
Since its was very late night I was asked for a room service for dinner they said they don't provide room service and the kitchen is closed, but its was mentioned on site 24hrs room service available, When I mentioned it they said week back they stop it. However they agree to provide some dinner as outside restaurants were also closed. 

The Hotel is very old and gives a bad smell even in the rooms. Cleanliness is not good, the floor is very dirty. The place looks like dead since I saw only one person during my stay. The pool is very dirty not as in the pictures. There were no beach close by, you have to travel 15 minutes if you looking for good beach. 

The people are nice and friendly however after 2 days I decide to check out since there is much better hotels in beach front in the same rates or cheaper. 

Overall the experience was not good and I felt its a waste of time.

Not up to the expectation

Our experience proves that you should not take all the bad reviews that you read on most sites..... from the time we arrived today we have been treated extremely well by the management and the staff alike. The rooms are very nice, comfortable and spacious. The local food is also just lovely. Even though there is no direct access to the beach I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice quiet stay in Unawatuna.

Very Nice Place

We were in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks, and after staying on a beach front hotel we fancied a swimming pool so had a wander around looking for a nice hotel. We booked the hotel and after had a look at the Tripadvisor reviews and were not concerned but thought we might have rushed into booking it, however i've learned that people can be SO picky when writing reviews! 
The manager was so kind to us, all the staff were extremely helpful, the swimming pool was great. The food wasn't the best food we had in Sri Lanka - but it wasn't horrible, and it's easy enough to rent a mo-ped or get a taxi near other restaurants. 
The rooms are really spacious (albeit a bit dated but that doesn't bother us at all - everything was good quality) comfortable bed and TV, air-con and bathroom were all great.
The manager really did make us feel welcome and made us feel like family during our stay. 
One night my boyfriend fell ill and straight away they sent us to the nearest speaking doctor, arranged transport there and back all for a good price and were very concerned and made sure he was feeling okay afterwards. 

It was a very relaxing hotel, and we will stay again as is it very reasonably priced!

Very nice!

I've been here many times and i had quite bad experiences. very noisy hotel (local weddings almost everyday), not very clean, food was poor and hotel`s staff (especially manager) was lying. also security guards have drinking problems....
