We stayed at Kumbura for a couple of nights.. I wish we had had more time here .. Wageesh and his family were fantastic and the food is delicious..This Eco friendly lodge is located within easy reach of Sigirya.
The accommodation is extremely comfortable and very quaint.. Kasun was always on hand to help make our stay enjoyable.. I would highly recommend a visit to this lodge nestled in an ideal tranquil setting ..it was the highlight of our Sri Lankan holiday 

Tranquil setting in paradise 

My husband & I spent 3 weeks in Sir Lanka from April-May.

We had 3 great nights with Wageesha & his lovely family.  We were the only people staying there at the time (low season) so we felt kinda spoilt.  Kasun was the man in charge in Wageesha's absence in our first 24 hours & he worked hard to make our experience a positive one ... helping us out with touristy/general questions, sorting out tuk tuks or drivers etc.

We'd pre-booked dinner there before we arrived & Wageesha's wife had cooked up an absolute feast.  I mean, THE BEST - rice, roti, fried fish, curried mushrooms, pumpkin, eggplant, dhal etc (I'm a 'pescatarian' but my husband eats meat).

Breakfast was great every day.  The garden is very beautiful & lush.

Sleeping in the upper levels of the treehouse, which is made of recycled materials & is pretty much open sided, was a novel experience for me.  There's a mozzie net of course & the sounds of the jungle are right there, all night long.  I'm a good sleeper but was fascinated, particularly in the early morning, by the sounds of unidentified birds etc.  It's a great noise to wake up to.

It was brilliant being in such a 'rustic', village style space.  If you have the time to get to know Wageesha and his back story, you will be rewarded.  He's a smart, lovely & hard working man & it was great to be able to make a real contribution towards his family's future.

BTW if you want to go for a swim (it was pretty hot when we were there), there are a few pools you can pay to use [make the effort to go to the Heritance Kandalama 45mins tuk tuk away, for lunch & a swim, for as long as possible.]  Getting to Dambulla, Polonnaruwa etc is pretty easy from Kimbissa, where the Lodge is.  Sigiriya (Lion) Rock isn't far way - hot tip is to consider climbing Pidurangula, which is next to Lion Rock and looks onto it - cheaper, but it does involve a bit of scrambling over rocks at the top.

A beautiful family experience, in a treehouse in the jungle!

I absolutely loved staying at the Kumbura eco lodge in the tiny town of Kimbissa. As soon as I walked through the lovely garden and saw the fabulous house, which was almost entirely open to the elements with huge benches covered with comfy cushions to lounge on and soak up the sounds of the jungle pulsing around you, the sweet smell of incense to chase the mozzies away, and a comfy bed up on a mezzanine, the breezes blowing through, and the fan if it’s hot, my blood pressure dropped and I settled in for three deeply relaxing days, nothing was too much trouble for the fantastic hosts and the food has to be tasted to be believed, so delicious and fresh, made by Dinasika, who showed us some of her secrets.

A magical place

Being here was like being part of village and family life. And what a family! Everyone is so warm and everything is organised with relaxed aplomb. The local area is stunningly beautiful,so much so that even though it is centrally placed for all the Cultural Triangle attractions after a day of climbing Sirigaya Rocketc we spent the next walking to the local lake ( get directions, its not obvious) wandering through the village and then lunching and swimming at a nearby Geoffrey Bawa hotel.  The food at Kumbura is gorgeous, tasty, healthy, locally grown food.Dinasika is a wonderful cook, and person.  Sleeping with all the sounds of the jungle was divine. Just be aware that your bedroom is at the top of a short but steep ladder so if you have mobility issues this could be a problem.Don't miss this gem. Next year there will be a brand new room with rice padi views to rent.

Precious memories

Wageesha and his family just can't do enough for you. I loved the inside outside rustic feel of this place, you are sleeping in the trees (under a mosquito net).
the bedrooms are located up stairs and have fans if the breeze isn't enough to keep you cool. It really felt like the treehouse of my childhood dreams.
The shower room has a really cool coconut shower. There is only 3 rooms so make sure you book in advance. If you love nature and are looking for a sustainable local place with traditional warm Sri Lankan hospitality (and don't mind a couple of bugs) you will love it here.
