Mahana Lodge is beautiful, tranquil and charming. It's a historic old lodge building right on the cove with lawns going down to the little beach.  Amazing views and a sense of calm.  It is brilliantly looked after by David, the host, whose attention to detail was fantastic, and his chef's table was a fabulous evening with an amazing meal cooked for all the guests together- really special.  We stayed in a beautiful little chalet set in the forest behind the main lodge accommodation and it was a complete treat.

Loved Mahana

If you can get a reservation here, GO!   We stayed at Mahana Lodge on Day 2 of hiking the Queen Charlotte Track.  The setting is exquisite - a broad lawn dotted with beach chairs, picnic tables and bean bag chairs leading down to a gorgeous little bay.  You can swim or take kayaks out.

In the lodge itself (slightly up the hill from reception/manager's house) has four comfy rooms each with an en suite bath surrounding a very comfortable central lounge area that also has outstanding water views.  The lounge has a kitchen area with complimentary continental breakfast items (cereals, fresh eggs, toast, yogurt, etc).

But the very best thing about Mahana is the Chef's Table dinner.  David (our host) is a chef and enjoys creating outstanding and inventive 3-course farm-to-table dinners a la Paul Prudehomme's Chef's Table in New Orleans.  It was one of the best dinners that we've had in all five of our trip to New Zealand.  We started with an amazing salmon rillette, then went on to a divine lamb (falafel for the vegetarians) with three gorgeous veggie dishes each elevated from its humble origins with creative preparations (the local cheese was heaven!) and a delicious lemon tart with a Madagascar lime curd.  David has excellent local wines for sale by the glass or bottle (beer too) at very reasonable prices.  It was a delight to be a guest at his table and his lodge.

Wonderful lodge and one of our best meals in NZ!

We stayed at Mahana Lodge last week and it was nothing short of fantastic .David the host has a very special property , there were 8 of us we all had very comfortable double rooms with ensuites , and a spacious  lounge .The breakfast was also generously good and his egg cooker a strange addition but fun to do .The highlight was the dinner , the chefs table .David produced a fantastic home chef cooked 3 course meal , absolutely beautiful .We had roast lamb rump for a main , as we were checking out the next day we asked what he was preparing for the next night , it was fresh salmon so he does mix it up .Worth every cent of the stay and a highlight on the track

Fantastic Host providing wonderful accomodation and food

We stayed two nights at Mahana Lodge, and found it absolutely delightful in every way. The setting is magical. Beautiful lawns and gardens down to a private beach surrounded by magnificent forest. David was a wonderful host, with the chefs table a fantastic offering, and well worth the $90. We had walked from Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge, and then caught a water taxi to Mahana for a first night, and then walked back to Furneaux Lodge and then caught the water taxi for a second night. A bit of a funny route, but gave us the payoff of staying at Mahana Lodge for a second night. The lodge rooms were very comfortable, with a beautiful common room. The breakfasts were terrific, and we filled ourselves on eggs that we cooked ourselves, high-quality muesli, juice, and yoghurts. We came as walkers, but this place would also be a beautiful, romantic retreat, or just a great place to unwind.  The lunches that David prepared to eat on the walk were also filling and delicious.

A little piece of paradise!

Mahana is a delight. A gorgeous setting with lawn and sun loungers down to the water, spotlessly clean rooms with quality bed linen, and a five star dining experience. I can’t recommend the Chef’s Table enough. David is an outstanding host and accomplished chef. Our three course dinner was served al fresco in a covered courtyard, complete with heating and blankets as the evening cooled. David included high quality, locally sourced ingredients and hearing him explain their provenance is part of the experience. Thank you, David, for a wonderful stay, Lisa and Chris.

Charming boutique lodge

We stayed here on night 2 of the Queen Charlotte Track. David and Gillian were both fantastic hosts. Each large bedroom has it's own bathroom and there was a communal kitchen and lounge area. Dinner was the Chefs Table which was local produce cooked and explained by David. Everything was delicious.Gillian made sure you were looked after at the table. Beautiful location. The self serve continental breakfast was generous with toast, cereals, eggs, yoghurt and a variety of hot drinks available.

Gorgeous views

We stayed at Mahana in the second night of the Queen Charlotte Track. Compared to other accommodation in the area, Mahana offers a more intimate and personalised experience. The staff are friendly yet not over-bearing. 
We stayed in the studio which is perfect for a couple with an excellent bed and hot water. The breakfast bar offered in the common house is one of the best we have seen in NZ for a continental breakfast. The whole place is kept to a high standard. You forget this is far from everything. We regretted  not having reserved dinner with them because the other guests were clearly well impressed with it.

Deserves more than one night

Stayed in the studio which was nice and quiet. Loved everything about the stay but the highlight was the bioluminescence display. We also experienced the Chef's table dining experience which was delicious.

A treat in the Sounds

Mahana was the perfect place for a short break away. Such a tranquil and devine spot.  We don't how to describe our amazing experience, there wasn't anything that wasn't enjoyable.....paddling the kayaks around the sheltered bay, lounging on the bean bags and in the hammocks, paddling in the clear water, sitting on the verandah of the homestead enjoying a delicious platter with a nice cool wine.  Dave's  Chefs Table dining experience was something certainly not to miss......outstanding food.  Very welcoming staff.  A fantastic night away and totally recommend Mahana Lodge.

A piece of paradise

Both a stunning location and stunning meal. We walked the Queen Charlotte track and were so glad we had booked at Mahana Lodge. We had a peaceful and relaxing afternoon on the private beach, followed by the Chef’s table where we met some lovely couples and experienced a fantastic meal. Couldn’t fault it!
