I chose 'couples' but none of those categories apply; I travelled with my adult daughter. 

We spent 3 nights at La Catrina and were very satisfied with every aspect of the hostel.  We'd both been in a rural San Miguel home for almost three months and wanted to have a few days/evenings in Centro.  $50 Canadian per night for both of us, including taxes, a breakfast of coffee/tea, cereal and toast/jam.  I bought juice from the kitchen at a regular grocery store price.  The room was immaculate, twin beds, great mattresses and pillows, good supply of hot water.  The whole facility was clean and well maintained.  I opted for the communal shower simply for more space and a better shower head but the one in our room certainly was adequate.  

Location was ideal, 10-15 minute walk to our favourite Centro haunts, good restaurants near-by...one really great Italian restaurant a block away from the hostel (Andrea's).  As an 80-yr-old traveller I would have no reason to choose a high-end hotel when there are places like La Catrina available!  

All positive, for a mother/daughter 80-60/yr-olds' experience.

Great location and friendly

Private room was a deal at $26. Super-silent (well, for a hostel), and about a 10 minute, very scenic walk to the center. Much help from the excellent English-speaking staff. Above average breakfast. For $2, you can get a hot meal add on.The low traffic, lovely street it's on has a decent Italian restaurant and a well-reviewed coffee bar. Also a very large crafts market is moments away. The nearby Guadaloupe neighborhood is worth a look, sort of the Williamsburg of San Miguel.

Clean. Cordial. Civilized. No Drama. The roof top terrace is a great place to work or to have a meeting or simply take in the marvelous view of the city. There is a life in the streets and there is another life on the roofs.  People can see each other and interact high above street level. It was amazing.

This place is great. The staff is numerous and efficient. The place runs like a well oiled machine. 

The continental breakfast if fine and the menu of additional breakfast items is fantastic. One can of course buy food and store it in the kitchen and use the kitchen as needed after 8AM. 
The internet service is adequate throughout the lodging, however I had issues with my Skype calls, even when I was relatively close to the modem on the entry level. If you work online with voice to voice communication as I do, ask reception about a second internet service. 

I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm room. There are not chairs, beds or mirrors in the dorm, but there were two windows equipped with insect screens. Housekeepers entered daily to sweep, mop, open the windows and empty the trash cans.

The bathrooms were adequate, but during my short stay I never had hot water for a shower at night. I am not sure it that was due to the month, January 2022 or the time of day. No matter. I took care of business at the bathroom sink with soap and (cold) water. lol

I chose La Catrina because it had an excellent rating and over 800 reviews on Booking, Plus the price was right, even though it was different on the La Catrina website, on Booking.com and on Hostel World. Of course you can know the price for sure by booking in advance.

La Catrina Will Keep You Coming Back for More!

Clean, simple rooms. We appreciated that they were pet friendly. Excellent and helpful staff. The property did seem quite noisy in the morning, but we were trying to sleep late. If you are an early riser there should be no problems.

Very friendly staff. The rooms were clean. Location is awesome, far enough from the church that you don't hear the constant ringing, yet only minutes away!!! The only negative I would say is the water pressure in the shower, at times it is very inconsistent.

Not superb

There is a lot to like about La Catrina hostel. The staff are friendly and helpful and they also speak some English. The location of the hostel is in a quiet area only 5-10min walk from the centre of the town. We also liked that they had beautiful Catrina murals throughout the hostel too. We had a room with a double bed and shared bathroom. There was not a lot of space around the bed, but given the price that was not unexpected. The room was cosy and even came with a tv. There is a DVD library as well that you can use. The inclusive breakfast was basic with toast, cereals and tea/coffee. However you can get additional options for 30 pesos extra. All in all, this stay provided tremendous value and we really enjoyed our time here.

Great Value Stay

Very good location in Centro, 3-4 blocks from the Jardin, 1/2 block from the mercado de artesanias on a quiet street.  Rooms are clean and comfortable.  dormitory or private rooms with or without bathroom are all available.  2 floors, with a nice terrace on the roof. A big common area on the main floor where breakfast is served.  Continental breakfast is free, or you can pay 30 pesos for very good chilaquiles, molletos, pancakes, eggs etc.  The kitchen is available to use any time after breakfast.  The staff is terrific, very friendly, helpful and kind.  We made friends with people from all over the world. 
We ended up staying there for a month!  
There's plenty of inexpensive restaurants around but we often bought groceries at the nearby mercado Ignacio Ramirez and cooked most dinners at "home."  If we weren't going to some event in the evening, we'd stroll through Plaza Civica to the Jardin.  It felt very safe at night.   
We've stayed in a lot of hostels in San Miguel. This is the best one we've found.

Perfect hostel!

I’ve stayed in many hostels all over the world and can honestly say that La Catrina is my new favorite! Great central location that’s an easy walk to many memorable sites in San Miguel de Allende. Beautiful Catrina themed murals. Comfortable rooms, both dorms or private en-suite as you prefer. Several outside terraces to enjoy the views. Free breakfast (cereal, toast and coffee or tea) or you can pay a dollar fifty for freshly made hot breakfast choices including traditional Mexican food such as chilaquiles and molletes or classic favorites such as eggs, pancakes and waffles. But by far the best thing about this hostel is the fabulous staff. Thanks sooo much for the superb service (and the great music playlist) Jaimal, Calaf, Armando, Angel, Rafael, Fernando, and Carolina! (Sorry if I neglected to mention anyone.) You were all beyond awesome!!! Couldn’t recommend this hostel or it’s diligent workers more highly!
