Mufatse Lodge

We stayed at Mufatse lodge twice during trips through Lilongwe. They offered reasonable rooms at prices to suit budget travellers, and were able to adapt to our budget. There were options of dorm rooms or private rooms.
Staff were friendly and very helpful with things like storing bags, flexible check out and ensuring we got good prices for taxis.

I wasn't thrilled to be stuck in Lilongwe for four nights, but Ethiopian Airlines lost my luggage for four days and I had to stick around. Luckily the amazing staff at Mufatse's, especially Mr. Kasiya, looked after me and made sure I felt safe and comfortable (I'm a solo female traveler) the whole time... he even took me shopping for groceries and supplies, and accompanied me to the airport to check on the status of my luggage... the rest of the staff also went above and beyond to make sure I had a pleasant stay. The dedication and sincerity of the staff made this experience, which could have been really negative, one of the highlights of my trip! Also, pretty garden, nice kitchen, and good location. Best option in Lilongwe!

Very helpful staff and good place to stay

WONDERFUL Staff!!!

I'm hit and miss on this place...I did stay here on 3 different occasions whilst in Zambia so there must be something....   I like it because I could use the kitchen, it allowed camping, was close to the bus station and Shoprite area where changing money was great.....

The downside.....  the long term religious traveler who had made it his home...and made other people think we were intruding in his territory..

The owner.... has a bit of a drink problem..He's fantastic when sober, but says alot of silly things when he's drunk... Final straw, was his absolute promise the next day to take me to the airport.. I'd rather pay him the gas money than  anyone else.  Double and triple checked but he never showed up... I allowed enough time for this but still very annoying....so arrange your own transport!!

Would be great if they payed some more attention to cleanliness and water shortages..

The location is great...still average...

Mufasa or Mufatse Backpacker Lodge
-Not too sure due to both name and location change whether this is the original or trading off of another lodge.

Derek the security was very friendly, informative and eager to interact.  The ladies appeared friendly but did not speak much English and charged a high rate for what was being offered: 10 beds cramped into one room adjoining onto another room with 8 beds: mosquito nets + mismatched linen: One cleaned bathroom for all but in need of restoration.  
6000k for one bed in dorm. 
Better lodges within walking distance at 50% of the price.

Private rooms available. Open garden at rear in need of landscaping if it wants to compete with surrounding lodges.
