While there may be more famous hotels and ryokans to stay in Kinosaki, many people don't realize that there are over 50 ryokans in the area, most all providing amazing service. Shinzan Rakutei is close to the ropeway and Kinosaki Arts Center, tucked away just off the main street. A decent walk away from the hustle and bustle of Kinosaki central, providing a quiet, serene atmosphere. That said, a shuttle bus service is provided to take you to and from the train station, and one can even take it simply visit the local onsen without having to walk, which is great in the winter. We were able to get a great deal on a room, with dinner and breakfast included. Despite the reasonable price, we were delighted to find that we would still be served a portion of crab and Tajima beef! Both were delicious, as were the multitude of other small and delectable dishes we were served. The breakfast was on a smaller scale, but still looked beautiful laid out on our table when we came down the next morning, and on both occasions, we left with our bellies full. The room itself was already heated when we arrived and included an air purifier! This was a great feature for me as I have allergies and often find myself sniffling in the older, dustier ryokans. While Shinzan Rakutei is old too, the upkeep and maintenance are amazing, and the level of cleanliness was well appreciated. Another welcome feature of our room, while not being a suite or special upgrade, our standard room included a small bath/shower! Which is often rare for Ryokans that offer public baths. On that note, the baths of this ryokan were surprisingly huge! And there is also a beautiful outdoor bath that I strongly recommend! The outdoor bath rotates access between men and women day by day, so if you aren't able to go on the day you check-in, I would recommend you go and enjoy a refreshing morning soak after breakfast! My only gripe is one that I've encountered at most ryokans to be fair. I like a lot of pillows, but a traditional Japanese futon typically on has one. There were 2 extra pillows in the closet mind you, as we were 2 and the room has bedding for 4 (Bedding that is lovingly laid out for you while you are dinner I should add). A personal preference as I like a softer, more cozy bed. So not a big deal. All in all, it was a great weekend stay and I left feeling relaxed and refreshed!
