Pros: 
Hotel on a small hill thus provide excellent view.
Excellent service, one of the staff speaks fluent Putonghua.
Tasty breakfast and dinner, but portion a bit too big.
Have a very beautiful small garden.

Cons:
Outdoor Onsen is good, but not outdoor shower esp in cold weather! Finally I went to public bathroom, it offers nice view too even indoor.
I found a few bugs flying in my room in the first night, which did scared me. But maybe that’s normal for rural area?

A friend and I stayed two nights and loved it. The inn is beautiful and wonderfully comfortable. Our room overlooked the valley and the small town. The outdoor bath is beautiful after dark. The food is delicious and plentiful. The staff is welcoming and kind (Lin speaks *excellent* English!). We really enjoyed wandering in Furuyu and discovering its small town pleasures: a small antique mall, a coffee shop with a micro lending library in a beautiful old house, and a walk of a mile or two up to the road station/michi no eki at the reservoir for locally produced foods and crafts. All in all, a delightful restful stay.

Note: this hotel posted the payment per head online, not by prices per room. So it’s not cheap! But the food is one of the most amazing traditional food you’ll have.

Location: suggest to do car rental, it’s high up on a hill distance to town. But it’s worth the distance with that view.

Stay: 2 nights with outdoor bath
It took a bit of back and forth for booking communication. We had a Japanese friend to call for us to ensure booking was fine.
*highly recommend to do so!

When we arrived, we had lovely Lin to welcome us. Knowing that we are from HK and speak mainly English or Chinese, the manager had arranged a multi-lingual server to help with our stay. She was very polite, speak intentionally, and professional.

Room is exactly what you see in pictures. Our fall view was spectacular looking at the mountains with change of fall leaves.

The tatami was prepared for us during our meal and it would be put away the next day when we leave for our day trips. Tatami was super cozy to jump in every night after our onsen bath.

The only 1 thing is the hotel is situated on a mountain, so there were flying bugs in our room every night. They do have bug spray prepared for you.

Food: AMAZING
Firstly, their rice is perfectly cooked. It’s so creamy and tasty that is perfect for each meal. It helps to balance the strong flavours to let you savour every delicate flavour within each dish. I will be dreaming of their rice!

They use local in season ingredients, which is what you want because the ingredients are fresh, flavourful, and packed with it’s natural sweetness. The chef used each ingredient intentionally and compliment each other well. It was crab season, so we had crab in 2 different ways between both nights.

The breakfast is well portioned with proteins, good fat, and carbohydrates at one of the most tastiest healthy breakfast.

1 set back with Japanese cuisine is the lack of green vegetables. But hey, we’re on vacation!

Service: great, except it was not very upfront about the prices. They expected we understood the payment per head online, while it was all in Japanese. It was never clarified in our back and forth emails.

With this price, they are great for service. They would ask for your plans, so they can prepare your meals or your room ahead of time.

Love this place. It's tranquil, it's nicely done, beautiful environment. You will need a car to get here but it's so worth it. The building is full of natural hinoki wood scent. Very friendly staff although I can only pick out words of Japanese but it's part of the fun being in a foreign country; they are all very nice and try to help even if they know you are not on the same page. 
Hot spring is petite but it's enough. You can also book a private onsen. We booked dinner and breakfast included. 
The view from our room is great. We could hear the creek water flow and birds. Absolutely enjoyable. 
We had onsen before dinner, walk around take some pictures and then dinner. Then sit in the lobby use free wifi, and have private onsen and ready for bed. 
Nothing is in a hurry. Very spacious in the lobby and woody calm scent. 
Highly recommended. A must visit if you like boutique type of Ryokan.
