Spent one night at this hotel. Charming but definitely not one I'd recommend. The decor looks like it's from the 80's and you are immediately hit by a musty smell in the lobby that gets stronger in the elevator. Thankfully didn't follow to the rooms. I had a western style room but other travelers tell me they had tatami mats which give it a more traditional feel. Clean. 

Good location but the google maps directions are useless. Basically take the pedestrian overpass to cross the main road. Take the right immediately after Lawson's convenience store. Keep straight (yes, go up the stairs) it will be on your left.

Close to station... Average

The hotel was very near the train station. However, it is a very difficult hotel to find if you are driving there. You first have to turn into a very very narrow road and the parking is extremely small and cramp. As we rented a Toyota Wish, it was a bit of an issue trying to drive in and out of the carpark.

Having said that, the hotel has an onsen and the staffs were extremely friendly and helpful. Even thought they did not understand English, they tried their best to help answer our doubts. 

We had breakfast for the 2 days we stayed there and the food was great. It was a small onsen but the bathing area was quite spacious and my family enjoyed bathing at the onsen area rather than bathing in the room. 

In addition, it is just a 5 minute walk away from the Nagasaki train station and therefore is very convenient if you travel using public transport.

Once again, I have to applaud and thank the staffs for being super courteous during our stay there and I believe I would stay with Nagasaki Hotel Ihokan again if i travel within Japan using public transport!

Very courteous staff

The Nagasaki Hotel Ihokan is as perfectly located as any hotel could be in relation to what a traveler needs and wants in Nagasaki -- but that is not what makes it special. 

What makes it special is a staff that really, really cares about its guests'  needs and wants, and goes out of its way to make you feel at home.  When you enter the lobby, there almost always will be two staff there to greet you, and they know who you are,  and  want to make your stay more enjoyable. 

What makes this possible is that this is a very small hotel.  The building is five stories high, and the first floor is entirely devoted to the lobby, the dining room, the kitchen, and the small offices.  The fifth floor comprises two ample bath rooms, with excellent, clean, amply large Japanese style baths.   The three floors in between, comprising all of the guest rooms, have a maximum of six rooms per floor.  Our room was a Japanese tatami room; Western style accommodations are also available.  

Breakfast is served in the first floor tatami dining room.  It is prepared individually for each guest, so one needs to advise the Front Desk the evening before when one will be eating breakfast.  

Ihokan Hotel is within easy walking distance of Nagasaki Station.  The pedestrian alley  to the hotel off of the main street in front of the station is lined with pleasant bars on both sides.  But do not expect to spend a long and pleasant evening there.  By 9:00 p,m., everything in Nagasaki is shut down and shuttered for the night; Nagasaki is not a late-night revelry town.
