Beautiful place, however the information published is not all accurate. Dinner is actually at 6 p.m. while the website says 5 p.m. Moreover, the curfew at 8 p.m. is not indicated on the website. So we missed the evening visit to the cemetery that we had booked and paid for.

A very homely place with good facilities and great vegetarian food. Helpful inmates who take very good care and are very respectful. 

Good location with coffeeshops/restauranrs/ close by and  other temples within walking distance. 

Great stay

A peaceful stay at Koyasan

We stayed here one night because of the Obon festival. (13th of August.. this was great btw) 
We have been staying at several temples before. This one was the most expensive of all. (1 night, €267,-)
We expected a lot for this price. However all the facilities were really old. The rooms were ok but the futons were old. Really overcrowded with up to 50(?) guests. Everybody had dinner together and had to use the collective Japanese (decayed) bathroom. A lot of mess in the hallways and everything had to happen in a rush because of the large amount of guests. 
One advise: choose a different accommodation in Kōya San. Kōya San is great to visit!

Really overpriced for a decayed place 

I spent a night there whilst visiting Koyasan.
Only 3 rooms were booked so it felt like we had the place to ourselves, so nice! The team was lovely, the room was big with a view on the garden where you can relax and look at Koi carps.
The breakfast and dinner were plenty and delicious, I wish it would come with details of the components so we can identify and find again the elements we loved.
The bath is nice enough, with ladies time in the afternoon / early evening before the men time later on. 
No bath in the morning but they warm you in advance.
Could have done with a second futon as the bed was a bit hard vs other futon beds I slept in whilst in Japan.
Overall good though, would stay again.

Peaceful and lovely garden view with Koi pond

We just had one night here and we enjoyed it ,it’s peaceful place to stay and the rooms are Japanese style with vegetarian food.
The chanting in the morning is good but there is very little to do in Koyasan so we found one night enough it’s a great trip up the mountains to get there on Funicular and trains

Nice place for a night

We enjoyed two nights in the temple. The staff are helpful and caring. We had a large room with en suite. Traditional floor beds and low chairs which were no problem to us even though we are not young. Food is vegetarian and although we are not vegetarians we found the food excellent. Daily morning prayers is a great experience so we attended both mornings. Village is an easy walk from this temple and a bus stop over the road. Great location and comfortable stay.

Peaceful and relaxing

We found the room beautiful and spacious, typical Japanese. The food was, as usual in Japan, excellent. All vegetarian, but the tofu must have been the best I’ve tasted to date. 
The public facilities are fine. There are separate western style toilets, several basins outside, and they are situated in more than one part of the temple so you don’t need to walk too far. The bath is a regular onsen, and deliciously warm. This seems to be the only option to bath/shower. As we’ve been onsen-ing for a few days, we were used to this – in some Ryokan we hardly used our own showers. 
We hardly saw other folks in the facilities during our stay. Note that you can only use the onsen from 17h00-21h00, so if you do any night tours through Koyasan you will have to plan carefully. Night tours end towards 21h00, so it’s a bit of a bugger. All that said, Koyasan is maybe worth a two-night stay, not just one night as we did, because it takes some time to get there.
This was a very nice experience, although I have to admit we were too knackered to fully enjoy every aspect of our stay. We’ve been traveling for six weeks now, with two kids (8 and 6) in tow. Getting up early for the morning prayers (at 6) and breakfast (at 7) just wasn’t going to happen.

Beautiful and simplistic

This was the second time in Koyasan. The first time was in 1998. While 20years ago not many western tourists came to Koyasan, nowadays temple are acquainted to this clientele. Our room had direct view to the small garden with the koi pond. The view was great. The food is all vegetarian. The tofu dishes were fantastic. You must love tofu, otherwise you get disappointed. The morning prayer is nice too. If you go early, you find space on the few chairs. We didn't have en-suite bathrooms. For me it wasn't a problem, but my wife hated it.

Splendid stay in a temple. 

It was a privilege and a pleasure to stay at Hongaku-in. The room was comfortable, and our private bath was among the nicer on our trip. We had a beautiful view of the garden, and a table and chairs from which to enjoy it.

We enjoyed our dinners as well. I'm not a big fan of tofu, but the meals had a delicious variety of foods and preparations I'd never had before. Even the plates and bowls were beautiful, which isn't something I'd normally notice.

The monk who hosted us was friendly and patient with my limited Japanese, and very prompt with meals.

We also very much enjoyed the opportunity to attend morning prayers.
