Astron Hotel

For me, a rating should reflect one's perception of the experience received both at the time and the "aftertaste" following reflection. With this in mind, I have no hesitation in rating the experience Her Ladyship and I received from the Astron Hotel as being superb. Now, I will qualify this for clarity as it's important for anyone reading this review to realise that the Astron is not a 5 star, plushly appointed hotel, but as stated, the physical elements, whilst contributory to a degree are really secondary to the overall experience. Allow me to elucidate: the ground floor reception and bar are tidy, clean and in good order. There is a decent sized pool at the rear which we did not get an opportunity to enjoy but the surroundings are comfortable. I think it would be fair to say that some of the rooms are a little tired and in need of mild refurbishment but this can be totally forgiven and overlooked as the positives far outweigh any assessment of mere decor. The rooms are good sized, clean and functional and our double bed was enormous. What is worth it's weight in gold however is the sea view which is superb. Kos harbour is both pretty and lively so there is ample opportunity for people watching and simply soaking in the atmosphere. Our breakfast in the morning, (we only stayed one night sadly) was perfectly adequate and presented some good choice between hot and cold offerings, continental, Greek, and English. What was nice was to be able to enjoy breaking our fast on the sunny front terrace whilst taking in the bay as the town began waking up. Wonderful. However, the element which elevates this rather humble (and I say this in a very positive manner) local hotel into such a positive experience is the exemplary level of service from the staff. From the moment we set foot in the door to the time we checked out, all the staff were superbly friendly, courteous and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. Extra Special mention must go to Mr William A who made our brief stay go from being potentially mundane to eminently memorable and for this he has our gratitude. I commend this hotel to anyone who values the personal touch over superficiality and seeks to experience the warm and personal welcome the people of this island are known for.
