To say Hotel La Madeleine offers basic accommodation understates its charm. Our two nights there took me back 50 years to my backpack through Europe days.  

We.were stuck for a place after a change in plans. We said how bad can it be and in truth it was not bad for a place to sleep. It was clean. The beds firm.  The in-room bath was just that - in the room - a toilet and shower in a corner separated from the beds by a curtain. 

The central location is good.  The owner charming.  In a fix, it worked. 


Took me back 50 years

Hotel was a good price, well located and the rooms were large with en-suite and towels. Gel soap is provided. There is a Flatscreen in the room and fast wifi. I was also able to get into my room a little early which helped a great deal as my conference started at 17.00. 

My only problem is the door, that had to be unlocked by a code and the reception wasn't open 24hrs. I'd advise arriving at the time stated by the hotel, as there may not be anyone to greet you otherwise!

A well located and well priced stay

This is the worst "hotel" I have visited, ever. It is under any criticism, totalt dilapidated and dirty. During the day you hear the click-clack from the rom above and from 06 every morning (except sundag) you will meet the challenge of staying  asleep while the tram pass outside your window every fifteen minute. The toilet is in a corner of the room, but don't worry, there is a kind of curtain in front. And in that context, it maybee an advantage that only one of six light bulbs in the chandelier worked. You will find the same description from 2016- the last bulb is still working. Luckily! 
The fact that the "hotel" is old and in the desperate need of rehabilitation could of course be charming, but it is no excuse for being dirty and disgusting. The room were dirty and dusty and no room cleaning during the the week we stayed there. No new tools and even the toilet paper weren't replaced when empty!!! First night met by cravling insect and both me and my colleague in the next room had new insect bites every night even if the window were closed. We do not really know what it was, but it left behind a vague suspicion of bed bugs. The "hotel" was prepaid without any possibillity of cancellation so there we were. For 100euro a night pr room without breakfast!!!!! I normally stay in small hotels, hostels, b&b and do not have   great demands, but this was nothing but bad. I will recommend it to nobody!


Steer away, find a bus shed instead

Arrived early evening and had a hard job getting someone to open the door. Eventually the receptionist opened up and was lovely - very friendly and helped explain things in broken English.  I had booked the superior studio with kitchenette and en suite.... Disappointed to find very poor facilities, lack of cleanliness and whilst the room could be described as rustic, it could also be described as being stuck in a 1980's time warp. However the linen and towels were clean, although other areas could not be described as such. We decided to endure the three nights we had booked and I can confirm that the location of the hotel is excellent.  Whilst I could have coped with the datedness of the place, it was the lack of cleanliness that really let the side down for me.  Having seen the shower curtain, I spent the least time I could every morning in the shower and I actually avoided washing my hair for the duration. The WC adjacent to the room was dirty and when the loo roll disappeared it was not replenished and nothing at all was cleaned during our stay.
If I had booked for a week, I would have definitely started looking for somewhere else to stay for the duration. As it was only three nights, we dealt with it, but we both agreed that we have never (even in our student days) stayed anywhere quite like it!
Be warned!

Worst hotel but lovely receptionist

This place is right around the corner from everything you want to see in Bordeaux. Stayed here alone for 3 nights room is small but has bed, kitchenette, and shower/bathroom. It's obviously very tight but extremely cozy and comfortable. Big tv, great wifi, a balcony, and super friendly staff. I'm not sure what these other reviewers were expecting but this was perfect for a solo young traveller in beautiful Bordeaux.
