The hostal is located in a dead end street between 9 and 10 block of Calle Larga overlooking the Tomebamba river. My first night here, there is a bar down below that played music past 11 pm that played a few nights. Lucky for me, I can sleep through the noise but if you can’t stay on the higher floors, or do not stay here. Also, I left my other hostal because I wanted hot shower. The shower was warm, not hot and there was no pressure whatsoever. The shower dripped. I asked them to put it on pour not spray. Since they do not speak English, even online translation will not work. At first, they put me in one room with carpets. Lucky, I did not unpack right away. I sat there and smelled a moldy carpet. So I asked to be transferred. They moved me to a room with wood floors. It made so much noise every time I walked. I only saw one guest while I was there and they were checking out. Then there was a young local couple who checked in without luggage (hint). The staff lives there so there is no need for a central key for you. They are available 24 hours. That means they use the kitchen too and though I did not really cook, I went there a couple of times. Once, it was clean and the other time, it was yucky with very smelly and scary counters. I will NOT recommend.

Quiet hostal in a dead end street - not...............

I stayed here for several days. The best thing about this place is that at night all you hear is the river. No street noise, no loud bars and no partying...just the soothing sounds of the Tomebamba river. The establishment is kept under lock and key. If you plan on staying out a little late, the owner will let you in after hours. Rooms are plain but kept clean. I personally had a private bathroom, but there are cheaper rooms without. The price is just right if you are on a strict budget. Location is great! A few steps from the river, a few blocks from many restaurants, the market and maybe 6 blocks from Parque Calderon. There is a huge kitchen and dining area to be used. Definitely worth a stay if you are on a strict budget but still want a private room with your own bathroom and want a good nights rest.

Cheap, safe, quiet, friendly establishment

We are simple and have no claims,but I was never in a bad room like this. First of all, we had a reservation, but the hotel manager forget us completely! He can not speak English. Then we saw 3 rooms for chose one, but in every room something was broken. 
The kitchen smelled very bad and not clean. There are REALLY better hostels in Cuenca!!

Never ever again!

I stayed here for almost two weeks and found the accommodations were extremely reasonable for the price.  I had a double bed with a private bath for $15 a night.  I had a river view room that was awesome, the noise from the old city was minimal.  No breakfast, but access to the old city was very close and many places to choose from for a decent gringo breakfast.  There are MANY hostels in the area, but the noise and exhaust from the buses are so close to these hostels, no thanks!  There is also a communal kitchen on the ground floor.  If you are challenged by stairs this could be an issue.  The top floor has a balcony that provides great street and greenbelt views.

Good Value

I recently traveled to Cuenca with a group who was looking to save $$ on lodging. For just $10 apiece per night, we stayed at the Hostal Casa del Rio, and I was very impressed - it was clean and quiet yet in a very central location, and the owners were quite helpful and accommodating.
