Sol y Mar was our favorite place we stayed during our Costa Rican adventure! The place was a perfect mixture of homey and adventurous. Monkeys and Tucans were visible from our breakfast table, Solanga, the owner, became our best friend, full of advice and conversation! The hostel is her home and she works hard to keep it clean and beautiful. Plants and animals are abundant and nothing beats Solanga's french toast and coffee breakfast! We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more, and were sad when we had to leave! Solanga was very accommodating and kind. If you are a young traveler looking for an affordable and comfortable place to stay in Manuel Antonio this is the place! Don't be fooled by the neighboring houses, once you enter the gate your in a whole new world! WE LOVE YOU SOL Y MAR!

This is  wonderful place with wonderful people.

   Don't let the neighbors confuse you, this is where you want to be.......Order out of Chaos, some neighbors are trying to place poor reviews because their properties are condemned and will be demolished, as they tried to build resorts without permits or any support from the community.

  Sol y Mar Backpackers is the best of the best in Manuel Antonio, if they do not have the ideal place for you they will send you to the ideal place so that you will enjoy your stay and have  a fantastic adventure under the stars and by the sea, this is where all your dreams can come true...

Beautiful, Quaint and Memorable!

Solo Bueno

We stayed at Sol Y Mar for 3 nights. The location is pretty good, but is a long walk to the beach and main restaurant area, although it is all downhill. There is a public bus which is a cheap easy way to get back to the top of the hill and the hostel. 

The rooms were pretty basic with an older mattress and minimal furniture. The bathrooms needed some repair and weren't the cleaniest. We also had to provide our own toilet paper. That being said, it wasn't awful. The beds were clean and no bugs in the rooms. Our first room had a fan which was perfect and the second room we stayed in (they moved us to do some repairs to a dripping tap) had air conditioning but it was either on high or off... No happy medium. 

Breakfast was provided, and the owner was very friendly and helpful with things to do and see. 
We took a public bus to Dominical one day which was a highlight of Costa rica. 

Our stay here was good. Not the best, but also not the worst. A happy medium and good for the price.

Ok affordable place to stay

The location is quite far from the beach, but close to some nice restaurants and bars. 

The room itself was dirty and had a random collection of seemingly leftover furniture that hasn't been cared for in quite some time.  The room was unprepared for our arrival (the fridge wasn't plugged in, there were no towels, etc.) and we had a bit of an ant problem.  However, the breakfast was very nice and the woman at the front desk gave us some great recommendations from a locals perspective for daily excursions. The hammocks were nice to relax in and the animals were very friendly and a pleasure to have around.

Overall, it certainly isn't the worst hostel I've ever stayed in but I would not stay there again if I were to return.

It was okay.

I really don't know how i took the decision to stay there now that im reading again all the comments... Rooms are dirty, small, smells bad, bathroom is disgusting... There are no windows, so there is no light. Hostess are costarican people but unfriendly and the worst of all I find a bat over my bed... I really love animals but i hate seeing a bat in my room and the attitude of the lady was absolutly frustating saying that this is normal and the solution is easy:  just take it outside the room. Please if you wanna enjoy your stay in CR don't stay here.
