I did enjoy feeding the animals , make sure you buy or carry with you cabbage and carrots or vegetables peels for you to feed animal ( they sell some at the entrance too for 10 Rmb)
Be prepared to enjoy the rides as well just after you finish that ( buy the package 100rmb like 9 rides) fun place to be in when it’s less crowded.



Best toddler place

I had to attend a conference here over a weekend and decided to mix it with a family break....with mixed results. 

We arrived around 9.30pm on a Friday evening and it felt like the place was shutting up shop for winter. It was pitch black and the signposting was non existent. After driving round for about ten minutes we finally found the reception to the section we were staying in which was tucked away behind some restaurants. 

Mrs Deva had booked what she considered to be a mid to upper range room (bearing in  mind she is a total skinflint, our opinions on value for money differ somewhat) that was around 400rmb for the night. It was in the 'farmstead' area which she said was modeled on an authentic village. Well she was right! In true village style the area was grotty and run down and infested with Mosquitos and other insects. Outside our door was a very large electric bug light that had snared some creatures not seen since dinosaurs walked the earth. 

The room was not filthy but not a place you would want to spend much time - very spartan and in need of refurbishment. Too exhausted to do anything we hunkered down for the night and arranged to change rooms the following morning. 

We moved to the Hot Spring Hotel which was around 750rmb for the night but was luxury compared to our farmstead experience. Again the room was in need of refurbishment - furniture was a bit banged up and the bathroom needed a bit of attention, cigarette burns in the carpet - Usual Chinese owned Hotel Fayre if I'm honest. The large bath in the room was nice though and my daughter really enjoyed playing in it. 

The complex itself is huge and a bit overwhelming. It can also seem a bit soulless at times. The indoor swimming pool was nice but the hot springs were pretty empty and neglected. Didnt see the outdoor water park so can't comment on that. 

For the size of the place, dining options were few and far between. There is a large open air eating area but the food selection is limited and expensive for what it is. They do however have their own micro brewery which serves excellent beer - 40rmb for a 1.5l stein. There is some naff cabaret at ear piercing decibels but in general it is a pleasantish way to spend an evening. 

This place very much reminded me of visiting a British resort. Run down and neglected, desperately trying to cling to former glories. It's one of those places that makes you feel melancholic wishing you could have seen it when it was in it's prime (a good 5-10 years ago I would guess). 

The actual 'Crab  Island' itself sits forlornly in the middle of a large lake and is overshadowed by half a dozen or so monstrous pylons with broken cables strung haphazardly between them. God knows what they were used for but they are derelict now, and seem to be a very fitting motto for the place. 

It is also a good idea to stock up on drinks and refreshments before you arrive. The prices for things on site are outrageous (10rmb for a bottle of water) and the rooms in the Hot Spring do have a fridge in the room. 

Pretty scathing review but I may visit again now I know where to level my expectations. It's not a terrible place, just disappointing.

Butlins on Steroids

It really looks beautiful inside, but that's where everything good ends. Corridors are dusty, rooms are dirty, wedding hall was just in front of our window and for us that was too much, so we left after just one night.

You can smell dust in the air

We had an enjoyable time 8 years ago at Xiedao and revisited it to recapture the wonderful memories. To our disappointment the place has changed so much. At one extreme, it is so commercialized right now with building after building of hotel accommodation, conference rooms and what have you. On the other extreme, the traditional 'shi he yuan' is so run down and poorly maintained that you cannot wait to get out. We chose the latter because they have the outdoor hot spring tub and could offer an alfresco feel - especially nice during winter.

The beddings and bathropes in the 'shi he yuan' are uncomfortable and dirty (the sheets are yellowish, the pillows stained with sweat/saliva I think). The toilet is rusty, moldy; the wash basin dirty and flushing system faulty (the content would not go down - we had to call house keeping!). The kettle is in such poor working condition you wonder if it is even safe to use, and dirty of course with yellow stains all over it. Btw, they do not even offer you any bottles of drinking water - you have to buy at their retail shop at RMB 5/bottle.  

The only consolation was the outdoor hot spring bath tub, which you have to rinse before using it. What caught us by surprise is that the water stop flowing after a short while and we have just soaked for 10 mins! Then a notice on the wall said that to save water, the management has set aside only 1 ton of water per room for use. If we need more, we have to call the front desk for another serving at RMB 60 per room. Imagine the inconvenience of scrambling out of the tub to the ropes to the phone to make that call. We paid for another ton of hot spring water for each of the 3 rooms we had since we had only started! The house keeper turned up afterwards to turn something on so we could continue our soak.

Perhaps it was wrong timing that we visited as everything seems to be closed except the fishing ponds. There was hardly any vegetables for plucking or eggs for picking; the ski slope was not ready and the whole village looked so deserted even though the hotel said it was fully occupied. 

Food at the restaurants were nothing close to what we had in town and even in small, local eateries. Service attitude was bad. 

Overall, it is really bad - we would not return and will not recommend to anyone.

Old, dirty, boring, commercialized

This resort was the worst. The pictures were deceiving. The lobby was super cool with all the wooden animals and plants throughout the place. However, the room was not up to standard. The walls had small holes. The bathroom was nasty. I used flip flops throughout the room. The tiles were also cracked. The heater did not work. I slept on my towel with my clothes on. I would not recommend this hotel. It was also very difficult to get into. Only bright side was I received a free taxi ride to the airport.
