In this hotel, everything seems nice at first glance. The hotel, the room, the staff. Except at night... we don't sleep there! Because of the mosquitoes (50 in short, it's the invasion). The toilets close and there's only one for all the rooms without private toilets, and the door to the room doesn't close... And when we go to the gentle owner to tell him everything she says that for the paid one we don't have to claim, she's sure she has to find it because she's working, she threatens to fire us in the middle of the night by keeping the remaining 2 hours, taking all of the money out of our booking account before we finally get to her, and we've finally offered to pay her the bill, and we've got to pay her, and we're sure she's got to pay for it, and we're sure she's got to pay for it, but she's got to pay for it, and we're sure she's working, and she's fine.

When you scratch the varnish...

The woman who checked us in was very rude and the place has paper thin walls so we could hear the people next door snoring and talking as though they were in the same room with us. The man tending to the front desk the next day was nice and accommodating.

Cheapest Option

In general, the care and cleanliness of the place are good, the attendant very kind. The atmosphere is quiet and very respectful of privacy. It is a short walk from the center, about 10 minutes walk; part of the road is dark if it is at night. I stayed in a two-person room with private bathroom, it is functional but not very cozy or comfortable and the wifi does not work very well.

Casa Atacameña, no es mala no es buena, is not a good house.

Lovely stay at this property!! San Pedro is a fantastic base point to explore the surrounding area and the staff is very helpful in providing information or helping set up tours. It is a little off the beaten path (i.e. not in town), but we appreciated that aspect. Bring a headlamp or small flashlight if staying here and planning on being out past dark. Make sure you take a few moments to enjoy the night sky surrounding this place!

We stayed 4 nights in November 2016 (1 double and 1 triple). The reception is very, very nice, but the rooms are short, and not in relation to the price (about $100 a night per room). San Pedro is now very expensive, and the hotel owners are abusing the price. Simple lunch, but the kitchen does not allow more than 5 people at a time. Double room without windows. Located 10 minutes walk from the central street of San Pedro. Not easy to find when you arrive by car, it is on a large square.

My partner and myself are travelling through South America for two months at the moment. We spent four nights at Casa Atacamena and it is definitely a place I recommend. We booked a twin room (there seemed to be no double available at the time of booking) with shared bathroom, which is something I don't like very much especially after previous experiences in some hostels, but we had to keep an eye on the budget. The bathroom is outside from the main building, so you have to walk across the courtyard to get there, which is just about the only "inconvenience", but it was always clean. The room was basic and on the small side, which is not a problem as you end up being outside on excursions all the time so you basically just sleep there. Also, it was very clean - and cleaned on a daily basis. The owners leave breakfast for you outside your door every evening, which is great especially if you have an early start the following day. As for the location, they are just outside the centre of Atacama, which means about 10 minutes' walk - I personally find that is a bonus. The centre of Atacama is fairly small and quite crowded with tourists, so it was nice and peaceful there. 
The kindness of the owners made a great difference - when we were there Fabiola (the owner) was away but her mum and Fabien where there. It really felt like being with friends. Very nice atmosphere. Highly recommended.

During my stay in San Pedro de Atacama I stayed in this hostel, the experience was excellent, the rooms were comfortable, always tidy and clean. In my case every time we went out for a tour and returned everything was tidy. The hostel is 5 or 8 minutes walk from downtown San Pedro, which is appreciated, given that in the center life is more hectic and noisy. The attention of the staff is excellent. 100% Recommended for the price-quality ratio.

Tranquility and comfort!

We stayed for 4 nights and our room and bed were comfortable.  The owner is very nice.  I am not one to complain but I did go away with a sour taste due to hidden charges. They offer Laundry service and we had them do one load of laundry.  When we checked out, we were charged $US 40 for the laundry.  The only explanation given by them is that water in the desert is expensive.

Comfortable place, but...

The new manager of the Atacama house, Fabiola, is super kind and very knowledgeable. She can give you tips on the tours, tips on where to eat dinner at San Pedro and other useful information. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. Near the reception there is a small kitchen. Wi-Fi and hot water (always remembering that we are in the desert). Really a nice place!
