AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!  

There is a reason this hotel is cheap, they cannot fill the rooms. We had booked to stay Sunday to Wednesday but left on the Monday. On first appearances it isn’t too bad, tired, but clean, the room was small but to be fair had everything  you could need and after looking at other reviews we were lucky, we had our own en suite rather than a shared bathroom on a landing, so the room itself was satisfactory. The pub is again pleasant, nothing offensive about it but nothing that stands out. The food was ok, very basic pub grub, I would imagine a turbo chef is an integral part of their kitchen equipment but it wasn’t bad food, more bland. I wouldn’t say the best meal of my life but definitely not the worst, what was the worst and incredibly offensive was the owner, never have I spent the night in a hotel manically googling other local hotels because I am in such a panic to get away from the place I am staying. I have never felt so uncomfortable In a hotel. Friends met us for dinner and we ordered three starters between four of us, when only two came out we asked about the third and we’re told they had run out, when we asked for an alternative we were told they had run out of that too. We asked the waitress is she could find out what they had and then we could choose from that. We sat chatting and sharing the other two staters and occasionally looking over to the kitchen door to see if the waitress was returning. A short round grey haired man who I now know to be the owner marched over to us and asked in a very abrupt and aggressive manor if we had a problem.My friend said not as such, the starter we ordered had run out so we are waiting to hear what you have, he then said yea you do have a problem, I have been watching you and you have been following her with your eyes, why are you staring at her? What’s your problem? We said no one was looking we may have glanced to see if she was coming over but he then told my husband to shut up and carried on being incredibly aggressive verbally to my female friend.l and eventually he left us alone. We finished our meal in near silence and were too scared to look around in case we were accused of being rude to the staff again. Our friend left and we went to our room and found a new hotel as we were not comfortable staying especially with a baby. We didn’t have breakfast for two reasons…1. There was a sign outside our door saying Breakfast is served between 8.30-9.00, to me that is making the window so small you want people to avoid asking for breakfast and 2. I was too scared of the welcome we would receive. We packed our bags and my husband went back in to explain the situation and say we were leaving and credit where credits is due, the lady on reception did not argue and refunded us for the days we were now not staying without arguing. We went to stay at the newby bridge hotel which was absolutely fantastic, for 15 pounds extra a night we were welcomed, nothing was too much for them, dogs were not only welcome they were accommodated and you have use of a swimming pool and jacuzzi. The food is also absolutely fantastic and not your usual pub grub, so if you are thinking of staying here, I would suggest looking up the newby bridge hotel and staying there instead.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

We arrived 10 minutes before the bar closed and were welcomed by Jess who gave us a pint and chatted to us while we drank it. 
The food was incredible, breakfast was amazing we stayed for 4 breakfasts and tried most of the menu, all were amazing and the dog was given bonus sausages too. Between us we tried 4 evening meals including puddings and starters and were really impressed by them all, especially the black sheep sticky toffee pudding. On the Sunday we had to leave before breakfast was served so John left us a box of porridge, juice, cereal bars, yoghurt and bananas. They couldn't do enough for us even putting our wet clothes from a sodden walk in the tumble drier and returning them to us the same night 
The bed was really comfortable, there was a smart TV in the room and the shower was warm. Probably one of the best places we've ever stayed with some of the nicest hosts we've ever met. We will definitely be returning. 

Amazing hosts, Amazing food, Amazing Place

In danger of becoming "the pub with no beer".
Writer has been there several times recently. One occasion zero real beer, another forced onto a last pump that was left because people were plainly not choosing it. Locals say beer has run out other times too.
This used to be a famous wet trade pub with a range of five or so of the best kept real ales in Cumbria. Indeed it was one of the best wet trade pubs in the County.
A bit of advice for you, select a couple of big selling beers as your main offerring, that people know will always be on and will always be in good condition, DO NOT RUN OUT, buy enough, anticipate bank holidays. 


The pub with no beer?

Called in on speck with 5 friends, had a lovely lunch, beautiful surroundings and picturesque views.   Our meals were delicious and the staff couldn’t do enough, would definitely recommend and can’t to wait return.  Hopefully back very soon, thank you all very much.

Beautiful country pub

Went for drinks. Getting served once they start serving food is challenging. When we did get served the barman ( who we later established was the manager) was abrupt and sarcastic when we complained. Many others were also complaining about drink service. We were going to eat but observed the food didn't look appertising at all. The chips looked burnt! For both these reason we decided not to dine. I understand the pub is recently under new ownership. They'll need to sort their attitude and service out if they wish to suceed.

Poor service and even worse attitude

We arrived Friday afternoon / early evening for a surprise 2 night stay for a birthday weekend. To book in we waited at the bar in a very cold bar area. 2 open fires were not lit. The young girl checking us in could not find our booking and left us waiting in the cold bar, returning to repeatedly apologise.
We were shown to our room, room 3 which was tired and shabby. The furniture was cheap and looked fit for the tip. The bed was positioned under the eaves meaning you could not stand up as there was no headroom, you could not even sit up in bed to watch the wonky TV.
The bathroom was cold, no heating in it, the bath again under the eaves so you couldn't stand up straight to get in or out of it, There was a hand shower head to use but you would have had to sit down in the bath to use it. The toilet wouldn't flush properly, the toilet roll holder was broken and the piece left on the cistern.
All floors in the room, corridors and the stairs very uneven and dangerous. On the the winding staircases the handrail was so low and so close to the wall it was difficult to hold onto. the bottom step was hidden by the closed door.
The breakfast room was dank and cold. Very little choice, no fresh fruit. the cooked breakfast arrived, looked ok but, the food was all of varying temperatures on the plate ranging from stone cold to warm. Other guests were being served with an incorrect orders to their request. Assess to the breakfast room involved another  difficult staircase.
We had the ongoing noise of a water tank emptying and refilling overhead, every time someone in the building used water. You couldn't see out of the 2 Velux windows in the room were so small & filthy despite the ability to open them inwardly to enable cleaning. There were no other rooms available and there were no lone travellers at breakfast. I would question the validity of some of the reviews we have seen as one was allegedly from a lone traveller the night we stayed, there were no lone travellers at breakfast.

On leaving the girl who served breakfast stopped us in the car park to ask if we were staying the second night. We advised her we were leaving as we were so unhappy and disappointed, to which she replied oh sorry, then turned to return inside. It took a week before my email of complaint was responded too the excuse being, they wanted to investigate first,  a simple acknowledgement of the first email is surely the first step in customer service. I did eventually get my refund for the 2 nd night but feel the lack of response initially was in the hope that i would just let it drop.
The establishments website and the information on Booking.Com is not a true reflection of the hotel we experienced, we are frequent travellers to the Lake District and have never stayed anywhere like this.

Absolute disgrace definitely one to avoid, to avoid disappointment.

arrived for a meal on sunday evening at 7pm to be told kitchen was closed. nonchalant attitude of staff member. She told us kitchen. was open until
7:30pm on sundays but it was closed on our arrival. place wasn’t busy some couples had just started their meal. clearly they didn’t want our business which is fine we won’t be returning & have been many times over the years.

We visited to have lunch whilst we were in the area, I wish we hadn’t. We found our table and sat down to read the menu, whilst we were doing this I noticed the abundance of flies that were circling the table, we should have left at this point. My wife and I both ordered the ‘King Prawn Tail Thermidor’. We waited 45 minutes for the food to arrive and when it eventually did I was left aghast at what was presented, the chef  needs to do a bit of research and find out what a ‘Thermidor’ actually consists of: as what we got was unlike any Thermidor I have ever had, a few prawns swimming in a sweet mustard sauce is not acceptable, and the vegetables that accompanied the dish were not edible, dry and undercooked. To be fair the burgers that the children received were okay, however my wife and I left hungry as we both left our food. We are not ones for complaining and making a fuss so didn’t say anything when the plates were collected, however the waitress did not acknowledge that two of the dishes had not been eaten which I found perplexing. Really disappointed.

Food poor, service poor and flies everywhere.

Visited this pub in the past and loved it, we were in the area so thought we would have a meal again. We were warned that the pub had new owners but thought we would give it a try.

When the member of staff had finally found our booking, we were seated and immediately noticed all the flies. My bottled beer came and was room temperature, not out of a fridge. We were getting more annoyed with the flies, and then finally a cockroach fell on us so we got up and left. When we told a member of staff their reply was ‘we can’t get rid of the flies’.

If they are happy to run a pub full of flies then I do wonder what the kitchen is like? Unfortunately it seems the new owners are happy running a tourist trap. We won’t be returning and it’s a shame that all the hard work of the previous owners has gone.

Flies everywhere

Hot tap poor, toilet flush broken and skirting in need of painting. Staff pleasant and helpful. Meal at Whitbread pub next door was poor and slow service, staff also good here. Would not recommend unless desperate.
