Arranged to pay on arrival which was more expensive to book since i booked a room for a colleague and we wanted to pay for own rooms, the hotel took payment prior to arrival and it has been a nightmare getting this straight. This is 6 rooms above a pub not a hotel, strict checkout at 11am and must leave premises at that time  no reception or front desk. The room was dated, had no desk and the shower had several steps to enter which are dangerous when the floor is wet. We were charged £160 per room which i would say is £100 too much. The fact they take payment before you've seen the room indicates they know they are overcharging for what is on offer.

Good location to setoff from - rooms at the top of VERY steep stairs - not recomnended for anyone with disability - very tired Pub b&b - room needs modernising - taps dripping all night - Staff very friendly and good food

Good location needs some modernising

Great location for Durham. Plenty buses  to Durham.  Quiet. Decent food. Friendly and helpful staff.

Warm welcome, great view over fields. Useful usb sockets in plugs to charge phones.

Top room with sloping roof and low beams was very comfortable, if you know how to avoid walking into them. Great bed, spotlessly clean.  Worth knowing dinner service on sunday finishes at 6pm.

Lovely pub, close to Durham city centre for a visit.

I had a lovely stay, the room was cosy and comfortable, and all staff I spoke to was very nice, down to earth, helpful and accomodating. Breakfast was really well cooked and tasty. The only feedback I have is that it was quite dusty on the floor between the bed and wall, and on the top of the headboard. The electric shower was as electric showers are; functional but not super efficient. I'll stress though that I did really enjoy my stay and would definitely stay again.

Enjoyed it

We stopped here on our way to and from a funeral.We were greeted warmly by the customers and by Claire,who apparently running The Avenue on a temporary basis.She looked after us from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.The food was excellent and good value for money.The rooms were clean and comfortable,though possibly need a bit of updating.We would stay again as it was one of. the friendliest pubs we have ever stayed in.Thanks to the clientele and especially Claire,ten out of ten.

Journey break

Good position. Parking easy. Good comfortable bed Shower room pokey and shower difficult to get in / out

We stayed before and had a fairly basic room on the first floor which was enough for our needs.
This time we were allocated a room in the roof which frankly is not fit for purpose and is a health and safety hazard.

The good bits:
A nice seating area with TV

The very bad bits:
The ceiling is sloping and is an assault course of beams that cross the roof space. My 6 foot 3 husband had to stoop  for most of the stay - the only clear run across the room is where the ceiling meets the apex of the roof and that is barred by a full size wardrobe, necessitating him to stoop to get past. The bed is shoehorned into an unsuitable space and even my 5 foot 4 frame struggled because the space on the left side of the bed is about 6 inches to the wall and the roof slopes above it. I had to shimmy sideways and lean back at the same time to get in.
I cracked my head on the ceiling making a drink at the tea making station which is not quite in front of a dormer window.

The bathroom is OK but tired with cracked tiles and poor siliconing.

This room needs a health warning and anybody who books it needs to be warned about it. It reeks of trying to fit a room into a space that is not suitable.

Coupled with our shocking experience in the restaurant we won't be coming back.
