The George Inn

We were so lucky to find The George on Chris and Ann's first Carvery since being here.
The food was excellent, hot and plentiful and the pub is beautiful, warm and cozy with the fire lit. A lovely atmosphere and clearly very popular with the locals.
We're staying locally so have already booked again. Thank you! 

We didn't have dinner here but stayed in the B&B. Very clean and nice, modern en suite room. We had a great night's sleep and a good breakfast. 

The lady owner has a very outgoing, warm personality, and makes you feel very welcome. Her husband is a bit quiet for a pub owner and there was a younger girl who served drinks and looked a bit shy and uncomfortable. However, the lady owner made up for all of them and if you stay or eat there she will do her best to accommodate you. We arrived at around 9.30pm and they were absolutely fine with it.

Set in a beautiful village, we stayed one night so just passing through!  

Not all places welcome bikers - but the staff were very friendly and the welcome was warm.  Our room was exceptionally clean and very pretty with TV, tea/coffee, hairdryer and WiFi - breakfast was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble.  Thank you 👍👍

We were staying nearby and were able to walk to this 16th century pub. We had friendly greetings from the staff and it was warm and comfortable. There is a separate restaurant but we ate in the bar area. Although they did not serve food during the day, except on Sundays, we had a fabulous Sunday lunch. There was limited choice but we could not fault the food we had, accompanied by fresh vegetables and perfect roast potatoes. We went back during the week and had an excellent homemade steak and ale pie, although it contained red peppers which my partner is allergic to. It would’ve been helpful if the ingredients were on the menu or if we had been asked about any allergies. Despite this we would return. An added bonus was that it was dog friendly too.

Just stayed 1 night in this charming old Inn. Very welcoming staff, lovely food, b'fast brilliant.  Roon was small with just a double bed, but very comfortable. Very strange opening hours & eating hours, so ring before arriving. I hope it will be a great success in this charming village.

Just got back from my Birthday Meal at the George Chardstock, on first glance I thought it was good value for money "2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £25".We were told in advance the card machine was not working, once we arrived at the pub we ordered drinks and We were seated immediately but then they seemed to forget about us (we were in a back room with no fire). Once we eventually ordered the food it took a while to get to us (I thought this was justified as it was cooked fresh). Most of our party ordered steak one was ok, one was fatty and the other was cooked wrong (this was pointed out but I didn't send it back as I didn't want to wait while everyone else ate), the other two in the party ordered fish which was overcooked. We wanted to order puddings these were basic with only 4 things on the menu but ok (again we had to wait a while to receive them) We then asked for the bill to be told they could not print it so the lady behind the bar advised me how much everyone should pay but when I calculated the bill it was way over what we should pay, I went back to the bar to be told she could not work the till and it was the tills fault the bill had not been worked out correctly (twice overcharging us), during this time her children kept interrupting for drinks etc. I had no appology for the bill error. This pub has so much potential but unfortunately for me tonight that was not meant to be.

Birthday Meal

Wanted to take some friends for lunch on Wednesday. Saw on the website that lunch is served from 12 until 2, Wed-Sat. Great.
Travelled there (round trip of about an hour from home), only to be told in the bar that they have stopped doing lunches. Told them they needed to update their website. The barman agreed.
It is now two days later. The website still advertises lunches as above. 
Seems like the owners are quite happy for prospective customers to make wasted trips to them. 
My advice to you- Stay away.

Don’t try to eat there

I ate at this restaurant yesterday, as a member of a group. There was only a Sunday Lunch menu offered.  It contained two beef dishes (roast and chilli); one pork (roast) and baked haddock. Stuck with this limited menu I chose the fish. Never have I had such a disgusting meal in a restaurant. The fish was overcooked and soggy and was accompanied by a plate full of vegetables, the same as those that also accompanied the meat plates (carrots, cabbage, cauliflower covered in a cheesy sauce, roast parsnips and potatoes). The only exception - two tiny cooked tomatoes that were falling to pieces; presumably there in recognition that it was a fish meal. Most of these vegetables were also overcooked. I returned home reeking of garlic (unusual with fish!). I would have complained but for fear of upsetting the other members of the party. Needless to say I left most of the meal on the plate. Everyone's meal had taken a long time to appear.  Mine was last - had someone forgotten the fish was cooking?!

On the plus side, the staff was friendly and polite when waiting on table. However, seeing a plate of food, hardly touched, no one asked if something was wrong. I shall not be taking any visitors there.
