We were visiting this area from Scotland and pre-booked a table for a meal on 23rd July at 6pm. Our plan was to treat our friends to a nice meal out. We received a prompt email confirmation of the booking, so, imagine our embarrassment and disappointment when we arrived to find the bar/restaurant locked up, looking quite shabby  from the outside with all the tables and chairs visibly stacked up on the inside. I understand that places have been finding things hard and re-opening after the Covid lockdown may not yet be possible but please sort out your booking system! As visitors, not locals, we had no idea you hadn’t re-opened and expected things were fine because our booking had been confirmed. On trying to phone the number you provided it appears the line was dead. 
In spite of the disaster the company still sent out an email review form - I will show good grace and restraint by not completing and returning it.

Disaster!

This was my first time in Battleaxes and I will return. The Food and ambience is really good. The furnishings and decor took us back to Victorian times and make for a quirky and interesting experience. Unfortunately the coffee machine broke down hence the 4*. Staff were really excellent too.

Get together over lunch

Pub hotel (6 rooms) with loads of character. The building has a gothic style, and the room decor appears inspired by this. I had a good sized room, which was very clean, with a good bathroom and a very comfortable bed. Very nice lounge bar with good evening meals and good range of ales. Good service. 

However, the buffet breakfast now being offered was very very basic, and only served after 8am. 

I’ve scored it a 4 because of the breakfast, and would have scored it a 5 otherwise.

First visit since new owner acquired the pub.
Last minute decision to visit for Sunday lunch for 4 Adults and 2 children. Earliest availability 14.30....obviously very popular but good time to go.
Very pleased with new menu/choice/quality...a great pub and so  pleased with the changes.

Sunday Lunch

It has changed hands and no more pies.  Nice service and pleasant though not outstanding food. My crumble expert was very disappointed - no crumble, no apple.
But nice place but it seems to lack any feeling of ownership - just like a chain pub.  Is it?

Went for the pies but

Went today for Sunday lunch.  I had gluten free meal which gave me gf gravy which is good but a distinct lack of veggies all round even for my non gf friends.  As gf I couldn’t have cauliflower cheese due to sauce - not sure why they can’t provide without sauce but apparently not.  No alternative offered.  Plate looked rather insipid- need some greens please and lots of veggies with a good Sunday roast?!  All plates except gf had plates swimming with gravy - we all thought amount of gravy with dinner v personal choice - please consider serving in jugs so please can choose, also side dishes of veggies and then it would be worth returning for as overall nice place.

Sunday lunch bit disappointing 

Our 3rd time here and the warmth of welcome and attention to service remain exceptional. We really felt like the only customers - which we definitely were not! Thanks for looking after us so well again.

Fantastic hotel and restaurant

We had 2 nights at the Battleaxes. The whole experience was really good. Room was comfortable (big bed), simply furnished and with a good bathroom (nice shower). The pub downstairs was great for a meal (Battleaxe's Burger was epic in scale!). Breakfast gave a good choice. The only (minor) issue was that the Wifi was intermittent, but the guys were working on it, and it did work in the bar area. But these things happen sometimes and it didn't impact on our stay particularly.
Overall, good Country Inn and we will certainly be back at some point.

Excellent b&b, very clean & tidy, set in beautiful surroundings, excellent choice at breakfast. Excellent parking facilities and the staff were helpful, informative and nothing seemed too much trouble

Weekend break

The hotel/pub had friendly staff with reasonably priced food and beverage.  The building is lovely and in a great location. Our cousins wedding party went very well, great venue for parties, lots of room.
