I don't recommend this hotel. upon arrival at the hotel the reception lady said there was no hot water. She promised to pay back some money, then gave me some strange receipt, but I didn't get any refund. Rooms very poorly equipped. carpets so dirty that it's better not to walk without shoes. stay away from this hotel

From the moment I pulled up outside I was made to feel welcome.  I would describe the establishment more as an old-fashoined guest house than a hotel which, for me, was a massive part of its charm.

Due to my commitments I only are occasionaly but the food was amazing.. I had ackee & saltfish for breakfasy and it was delcious.  I am most definitely going back next June...

I was DJing in Brighton for the weekend.

Trickle for a shower. Took an hour just to wash! Mould over shower ceiling and base. They even painted the shower tray which is peeling off! Who paints a shower base/tray! 
Threadbare carpet. Proper bare in many places!  Pictures added.  No idea what is living/growing on top the wardrobe! Ahhh! The windowsill looked dusty, in the middle,! No, just ground in dirt!  TV doesn't work. Not the end of the world but when you need something to take your mind off the rest....,if it was 20 quid it would be too much!  Maybe this is what you get for "dog friendly" human and dog friendly would be good! 
Good bits... kettle works. Lights work. Flush works. Sink taps work better than shower...just. Ned squeeks and creeks so maybe that's the answer! Make sure you bring something to divert your attention!  Oh and ...in case u missed it...there is a £25 key deposit. 
I have stayed in other places for the same price, ish. Look around for your own benefit.

Greeted by pleasant hosts, clean room with nice bed on the firmer side (great for bad backs)
Good TV, refreshment tray. Nice warm shower (outside the room) toilets are inside in a small separate room. Was left alone by the owners which I enjoyed as an introvert. Didn't have cash for the key deposit at the time, hosts were really laid back about me dropping it off later in the evening. Carribbean breakfast menu which looked nice but sadly didn't try. Would recommend for a humble night's sleep. Also great location for pottering about the city. Thumbs up.

Doors banging all the time even at night 1am and 2am cant close or open windows as people shouting outside their hotel at nigt after midnight hot conjested rooms wont reply to messages very bad on their commitment wont recommend for family no WiFi anywhere inside the hotel toilet flush doesnot work properly hotel owners who runs it are nice but bad on committment needs refurbishment as blinds are broken too mobile signals are not good either only if you sit next to the window beach is bit far nearest one right infront is quite down hard for coming back up through stairs and dirty smelly tunnel nearby the beach good for bachelors or solo people will save them money if bought earlier no car park and refurbishment going on right now next door

The hotel is not well maintained, is falsely advertised as having parking which it doesn't,  is grossly overpriced and has poor service.
It doesn't measure up to 3 stars.

Avoid at all costs or you most likely will be copying and pasting this or other of the bad reviews

Appaling hotel, worst hotel I have stayed in

Had a friend visiting from London. We were going to enjoy the sunshine this weekend so to make it more exciting, he booked a so called "deluxe double room" at this hotel with sea view and parking. He made the booking through booking.com meaning his card details were already checked and verified. In the booking documentation, it was stated that payment would be finalized at checkout.

We had our dinner in Kemptown and went up to the hotel room to catch up and enjoy a movie. (I shouldn't have to mention that my friend is black but it's relevant in this context unfortunately). Just before midnight totally out of the blue, there was a knock on the door. A staff member asked my friend to go downstairs with her stating that there was something wrong with his transaction. My friend told her that it's midnight, his checkout is next day, he'll deal with it then and he closed the door. I was watching TV and wasn't visible from the door (may I mention that I am white. Again, relevant here unfortunately).

Next loud knock on the door, 20-30 min later, was a 4 person police squad. He was ordered to leave immediately and gather his stuff in front of everyone (he was not allowed to speak or have privacy to get dressed). At this point he moved back, in shock and I spoke up. Seeing a white woman in the room changed the tone of voice immediately but police insisted that we both leave immediately. It didn't matter that he suggested putting a £1000 deposit (the substandard room was small, was no "deluxe", had no parking and invisible sea view and they were charging him £210 for it). We were escorted out like criminals and when out of the hotel, the police changed their tone entirely, suddenly concerned about our well-being, probably realizing they were told some bogus bs story about "an abusive black man who refused to pay his bill" or something similar.

I am a Brightoner myself and I have never seen anyone be treated like this here. Needless to say this experience has left such a deep mark and we lost sleep and talked for hours last night trying to prevent the horrible experience from leaving a stain on our weekend. We are both shaken to our core.

Appalling treatment by staff, substandard conditions and possible discrimination

The room had a bathroom that was boarded up as the shower was broken so we had no shower for our room. The carpets were covered in stains, the bedding wasn't properly clean and the whole place could have done with a good scrub. The radiator in the room was stuck on full blast so it was absolutely roasting in the room as well, which only added to the musty smell. You couldn't pay me to stay here again.

We travelled from London (2 hour drive) and called the hotel when we were 15 minutes away about parking advice. The lady who answered the phone gave us her suggestion and all was fine..
We then arrived to be told that one of our rooms wasn’t accessible and they only had one room available (we had booked 2!)
No solution was offered, or any help to find another hotel or room (it was a busy Saturday in a hot weekend in August!) 
We spent 4 hours on the doorstep looking for another room. My friends ended up paying 4 times the original hotel cost for a room somewhere else, otherwise we would have had to go home. We asked for a discount to counteract the awful service of the hotel and the inconvenience (only 1 room being available when we booked 2). 
We were given a £10 discount but only if we paid in cash.
The room they did have available was AWFUL. 
It was dirty, way too hot, dated, just awful. It clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a very, very long time. 
The carpet in the bathroom (odd anyway, why have carpet in the bathroom) was so disgustingly dirty I can’t even describe.
The shower pressure was so minimal it was honestly less than a drip. And ice cold.
The coffee sugar tea etc was all way out of date
The sink (in the bedroom, no sink was in the bathroom) was dirty and the plug didn’t work. We tried to keep our bottled water cold in there but it didn’t work as the plug and drain was so broken. 
Overall, a awful and disgusting experience.
No matter how cheap it is. Please don’t waste your money and time.
We would have been better sleeping on the pier. 

Awful

I’ll start with the okay things about Alston House B&B- I wouldn’t say there are any real positives. The rooms are a decent size and the hotel is in a good location for Brighton nightlife and the lanes. The cleanliness leaves a bit to be desired but is reasonable for the price of the rooms. Unfortunately this is as far as anything good about the hotel goes. 
The biggest problem that the hotel has is in the form of its owner/manager. From the moment we first checked in, she was constantly checking up on us every time we left the building or came back, interrogating us about where we had been and where we were going. Although this was unpleasant and unprofessional it wasn’t anything in comparison to what was to come! 
During the duration of the evening we met up with a group of friends. Unfortunately there was a fall out amongst this group and one of the girls was left stranded with no where to stay and no way of getting home. As we had a quadruple room with only two of us left in it we took her back to our hotel rather then leaving her out on the streets all night! Had there been anyone to ask at the b&b we would have done so, but we were not going to be waking anyone up ‪at 1am‬ in the morning! 
The next morning the manager collared us as were leaving to go find a cafe for breakfast and told us that she was aware our friend had stayed the night. I said yes and explained what had happened, she said that was fine and said nothing else about it. We thought nothing else off until we returned to the b&b to collect our bags and check out- only to be greeted by the manager in the most aggressive manner, accusing us of trying to get one over on the hotel and demanding £20 from us there and there, or she would charge £60 to my credit card! Although we were annoyed that she hadn’t mentioned it before we agreed to pay the £20 and I got my card out. She then started shouting at me insisting that it had to be in cash or she would charge my card 60! Now although i’m sure hotels are entitled to charge an additional fee for extra occupiers, the fact that she was demanding cash makes me feel that this was going in someone’s pockets that it shouldn’t have been and was not actually hotel policy. To resolve the issue amicably we paid her the £20 and tried to leave the hotel. She however continued to shout at and berate us and accused us of trying to steal from the hotel. My sister at this point asked her, quite reasonably, what we were supposed to have stolen, as the girl in question had not eaten or drunk anything in the room, and had not even had a shower. The owner responded to this by threatening to ‘lay her out’ and called my sister a f**king c**t! She then proceeded to stand in the street shouting abuse at us as we walked away. 
To clarify we had no issues paying the £20 charge although it’s slightly dubious that this is an actual policy, however the attitude of the manager was beyond unacceptable, she was incredibly rude aggressive and intimidating. I would seriously suggest giving this hotel an extremely wide berth.
