I stayed here for 3 nights on a solo trip. The staff couldn't have been more lovely to me. Sandra served the breakfast service, which was fast and welcoming. Coral cooked exquisite meals in the kitchen using locally sourced products. Daily specials were available and changed regularly. Sam, Charris, and Perdita served the drinks and meals. This place is so friendly and they can't do enough to help you. The TV in the room was a smart TV, so I could access a range of films and programs when the weather was too wet to go out. I thoroughly recommend this place.

Short trip

While walking the SWCP I'd experienced two days of rain and needing a bit of R & R from camping I rang the New Inn and, more in hope than expectation, secured a bed for the night.

The staff were fantastic, a comfortable bed, lashings of hot water and some fantastic food.

Restful respite from the rain!

Helpful, friendly staff and Clovelly is lovely, but this formerly characterful hotel is in desperate need of TLC or complete renovation, especially at the price. We rejected the room we had booked because paint was flaking off the bathroom walls and the bath was stained and grimy (I expect a hotel to be at least the same standard as my home, and near spotlessly clean). After being offered a succession of others, all of them tired and dreary, we opted for a tiny double room that, while still pretty dirty, with a grubby kettle I had to wash before using, frayed curtains that weren't big enough to cover the whole width of the window and a broken bathroom latch, was the best of the bunch. It was a very tight squeeze with our large dog and her crate. The bedside lamp and windows were disgustingly dusty (see pics), but the small balcony had a pleasant distant sea view (as well as numerous spiders' webs, as though the cleaners didn't consider outside space as part of our accommodation). Breakfast was pleasant enough but basic, and you might or might not get yoghurt, depending on arrival time, though our dog wolfed down her sausage with gusto and gratitude. Hygiene standards were dubious, since sliced supermarket loaves were kept in their original plastic packaging, meaning guests each put a hand in to pull out a slice. Ugh! And, while not the hotel's fault, we'd have liked to be informed that extensive building work is going on opposite, so there was clanging and banging from 7am, and much of our view was of scaffolding. Sadly, for us it was a very poor experience and while we endured the two nights we were there, rather than making a fuss, we regretted booking, explained this quietly on leaving (it clearly wasn't the first time the receptionist had heard this), and certainly can't recommend.

Truth? We wish we'd booked elsewhere.

We stayed for 3 nights. Lovely comfy room with a great view and a balcony. The lady at reception ( Netty)was really friendly and helpful and she had a lovely friendly dog with her.
Therese in the restaurant  was friendly and helpful.
The food was a hit and Miss my partner had the Hake and it was one of the best fish dishes she'd ever had but I had the risotto but it wasn't very tasty.
Our real only gripe was the attitude of the server we had on the second evening (Jon) was such we ended up not having a meal that evening and went to our room without a evening meal.


Hit and Miss but mostly Hit

I went here on a special trip to visit a dear friend. The village of Clovelly is simply breathtaking! Come prepared with good walking shoes as it is up and down steep cobbled lane ways. No cars allowed. It’s full of charm and history and very unique . The New Inn is bursting with historical charm ! Each section of the building has its own unique historical look. It was a lovely spot. The staff, the food and the room were lovely. It was a peaceful and beautiful spot! Be sure to visit the nearby Lord’s gardens and visitor center , which has a free short film about the history of this special unique hidden gem in Devon!

What an awful hotel. 
They can’t even reply to the emails. 
Shows you had bad and embarrassed they really are. 
I feel I need to let you all know about the stay, I’ve just had. 
This was my 3rd time, of visiting you. 
I left a brief message to the reception lady this morning - on the back of your menu, as I checked out, I’m not sure she could read. As has no expression, or comment. . 
Unfortunately we are extremely disappointed  on this visit (which is unusual as we have been back a few times) and also told so many people to visit) but your standards have dropped so much) we definitely won’t be back. .  
On check in we asked about WiFi (receptionist (if you can call it that ) had no idea and wasn’t advised on any WiFi (when we did get a password) the next day  it didn’t work. 
Breakfast was horrendous - I seriously think you need to re/train some of your staff. 
You advertise vegan (but your cook) does not know what Vegan is (I’ve been a vegan now for 6 years) for health reasons 
We ordered Tofu scrambled egg (as it is on the menu) emphasised 3 times I’m vegan 
When it arrived could not believe how good the cook was to make it look so much like normal scrambled egg (and it tasted tottaly of egg) 
Asked the waitress how this could be 
So she sent the chef up
The chef then said (Yes it’s Vegan) 
I cooked the tofu - with the eggs (if I had eaten them) I could have been seriously ill (to be honest) I should take this further and sue you. 
This is absolutely disgusting, so people may no eat items due to there religion or so on. 
I’m actually lost for words. . 
Today - at breakfast we said after yesterdays ordeal (we are worried as to what to eat) 
And said just beans on toast said 2 times brown bread (came out white ) she had forgot 
Really. 
You pay for a cream tea but you don’t get a cream tea. 
I really would have like a reply - to show at least you are a professional establishment. 
You obviously have to do the travel zoo offers - as no one really wants to come normally. 
Also your chef admitted (she doesn’t know how to cook Vegan) 
Please explain why she in the kitchen then - when Vegan is on your menu. 
I’m also concerned - as we are in the restaurant on our first night there  - god knows what we ate. 
Please before you book this hotel - look at others first. 
The decor is very tatty / and the beds are so old they dip. 
Room 7. 
Stay was 29th and 30th. 

Don’t book this hotel. You could die. If you have a dietary requirement. 

I emailed the hotel with this feedback after the stay but they haven’t bothered to reply. So here goes…

We were both disappointed with several aspects of the hotel and felt it fell far short of the standards you would expect for the price paid (£105 a night).

My room and bathroom was full of flies, spiders and cobwebs. Not one or two - dozens. The hall was also full of flies so clearly there is a problem somewhere.

The bathroom does not have adequate ventilation. After just a short shower the walls were streaming and stayed like that for the entirety of the stay. There is mould on the walls, ceiling and grout. 

Constant noise from New Inn pub customers in the street kept my dad awake til 2am. He rang the bar manager at midnight and he (manager) asked people to come inside but it didn't make any difference to the noise. Obviously people can stand in the street and chat if they want but the sounds bounces around so much that it sounds like they're in the room with you. Better soundproofing in the rooms upstairs is needed or at least warn people to bring ear plugs.

Neither of us would stay again because of these issues. 

Disappointing 

Spent a couple of nights here with my wife and we thoroughly enjoyed it. A spacious room, with a balcony that we did not make use of, and a very comfortable bed. The usual tea and coffee making facilities, but also biscuits. The shower was powerful and plenty of soaps/shampoo etc provided. All of the staff that we encountered were very friendly, to us and our dog. The breakfasts are fab, with top quality bacon, sausages and eggs and the evening meal we had was also excellent. If you are having a cream tea, you may need to call for back up! Overall, a very enjoyable stay.

Short getaway

Bit of a curate's egg to be honest.  Rooms were spartan and not en-suite (in our case - I do know that there are ensuite rooms elsewhere in the hotel) but were perfectly adequate otherwise and very dog friendly.  Food was of medium quality, from a limited menu and significantly over-priced.  The dining room was plagued by flies and the tabletops were unwiped and sticky.  That said, the people - or more particularly the bar-person - were super friendly and helpful.  The ambience is quirky and so are some of the bric a brac pieces in the hotel.  Clovelly is a strange place and this hotel fits right in.   

Not as charming as I had hoped

B and B over the Clovelly Crab and Lobster Festival. A cosy and comfortable doggy friendly bar and small restaurant area. Unpretentious pub grub. Friendly crew. Rooms a tad on the tired side but we were delighted for a balcony and sea views. Simple breakfast with wonderful locally sourced sausages. All prices very reasonable. Local real ales on pump.🇬🇧🇳🇿
