I found this gem when I received a voucher from a friend to stay here. I am amazed by the bad reviews they are receiving. It is rustic and 'basic' accommodation but that is made clear by the owners/website. The unit was spotlessly clean. The kids found the loft area interesting and they enjoyed having their own space while still close to us. The kitchen was clean and the bathroom had plenty of hot water. They came down to the unit to show us the cell phone charger and how the lights worked. The view of the river is stunning and having a braai in that fresh farm air was wonderful. The pool was sparking clean when we were there and they were even kind enough to charge my laptop in the office. All in all it was a nice break from the usual city spots and we spent many quality hours with the kids who usually just space out in front of the tv.

Back to nature

We stayed there - on a working citrus farm - for 5 nights in river cabin 2. The friendly host melissa offert us to use the swimming pool - it was deep green from algae! The cabin gave us a nice view to the sunday river. In average the place was quiet, but the cars and trucks driving over the riverbridge of the near by mainroad from Kirkwood to Addo was clearly audible and sometimes disturbing. In comparism with other more comfortable accomodation, the rates (600ZAR per unit/night) appear as to much, looking to the shape of the wooden cabin, the poor condition of the shower and  the very economical space of the inside area (living room, kitchenette). During the next visit to Addo we will choose an other accomodation.

very rustic place

We stayed 3 nights in the self catering accommodation. Advertised rustic and with solar. Have to be honest and say that it was not what I expected and I personally think too expensive for what we got compared to the other places we stayed at. The if led lights, no plugs, dirt, plastic cutlery and a lot of air vents is your thing.... there was a nice deck which looked out on the Sondags river. Not a place I will stay at again, but if you're not fazed about much other than sleeping and having a braai, then you might like it. Different strokes for different folks.

For very "rustic" lovers

We stayed in one of the river cabins.  Melissa was very accommodating to us by giving us another mattress, since we needed room for 5, not 4.  Difficult to find, often.  Our teenage girls were fine up in the loft and the straight up ladder did not bother them.  My husband and I slept below and were quite comfortable.  It was a hot day, but cooled down when the sun went down.
We had a little trouble getting the water in the shower to maintain one temperature.
Melissa also helped us with places to eat and area attractions.
The place is advertised as rustic, so  if you go with the proper expectations, you will be fine.  Our only disappointment was that the pool was rather dirty.  Needed a good cleaning.

We booked for 3 nights but left after 1 night, so terrible was the accommodation. Just the kitchen was OK. 
The sticks, of which the wall was build, came down; the matrasses were too bad, even to offer to children; the stairs are impossible to climb (straight up), so we had to sleep on the ground; the cabin is just one space with 4 beds and 2 matrasses on the floor; no space to put your luggage; for 2 people it would be OK, but Kelvin Grove puts 6 adults into it. Cheap? No ways: for everything you have to pay ridiculous prices; even for matches you have to pay (10R). In the neighbourhood are accommodation offering a thousand times better accommodation for about the same price (Homestead; Chicane).
