I was a little worried once i'd booked to stay here having read some bad reviews.

However, once the initial shock of the basement looking like a building site (Madeiran builders work very hard, so I imagine it will be finished very soon...i'm writing this on 22/4/17) my opinion changed very quickly.

Sure it has some downsides....the shared toilet doesn't have a lock, neither does the shower and the rooms could do with individual lockers, however, it was clean and very well positioned in central Funchal and once you get to know the basic layout of the City, this Hostel becomes incredibly convenient with 2 decent supermarkets within 200 yds walk. It's also roughly the same distance to the Aerobus stop.

The rooms are shared (4 to a room) but what do you expect for the money? I paid 10.5 Euros a night and that included breakfast (continental....bread, ham, cheese, cereal, cakes, coffee, tea and fruit).

Anyway, no complaints at all for the price, although I kinda missed having my own room, so maybe next time i'll not be so stingy.

Best of budget but conveniently positioned

This hostel is under new management and parts of it are still under construction. We found the owners and staff to be friendly and helpful even though they are going through some growing pains being new to the hostel business. We were told the name will change soon to "FUNCHAL URBAN HOTEL" in the near future. They have a variety of rooms available and we choose a private room for our 1 week stay. Being new rooms appear to be clean and modern. The location is very central, quiet and safe. The free breakfast is basic but their restaurant offers a buffet lunch that is reasonably priced.

Good Budget Option

This hotel charged me prior to my arrival on March 27th and again on April 12th. This I thought was an innocent mistake and they refunded me the duplicate transaction on April 18th. HOWEVER.... 
I was charged by the hotel Dec 15th and TWICE on Dec 20th for a total of £720!!!!! 
1.) Why does they still have my details on file from April? 
2.) Why are they repeatedly charging my card

DO NOT STAY HERE. 

My bank is obviously disputing these and have blocked my card now. I just find this unbelievable and need to warn others this is not a reliable place. 

The hostel itself I actually had no problems with, room was ok! I've put travelling Dec 2017 (even though I was there April) so this is at the top of the reviews for people to see before booking here!

Fraudulent!!

Worst hotel I have ever been on! 
First when we arrived to the hotel the room was dirty, still with hairs on the pillow, the bathtub was dirty, mirror and carpet of the bathroom. When we told the reception the room was dirty she made it look like we were lying but finally made it to clean on the second day. 
The second problem was the lack of wi-fi on the bedroom for 10 days, we were told the problem would be fixed because someone would come to fix it, but after 10 days nothing happened.
The third problem was the cold water in the bathroom making almost impossible to have a bath making me and my partner sick. We had the "Presidential Room" with a big bath tub but we never made it to use it because there wasn't enough warm water.
The fourth and last problem was the cleaning issues with the gym. All the equipments full of dust and super small area.
As I asked for at least a small refund I was told that the maximum the hotel could give would be a meal voucher.

If you are planning our vacation don't stay on this hotel, even tough it has a very good location it is not worth it. You will have too much stress and you will feel like you are worth nothing as a client.

SCAM PRICES
This is a Guest House that does not provide the booked price when you checking in. Is much more expensive than expected when you arrive. 
Different prices for different nationalities.

But the kitchen and cleaning staff are nice people. Shower, toilets have no locks and the room is very responsive.

Can NOT recommend this!

Well, you were right. We've been frauded for almost 600 euros... We had to cancel our cedrit card due to the ungoing charges every day. 

Disgusting, really. Don't go there I've never seen something like this.

Fraud

Do not stay at this place over rated over priced you pay for breakfast u dont get they make excuses there are no lifts his beer is 50 per cent more expensive than anywere else the buffet is over rated to which you pay 6 50 euro no laudry the rooms are small and smell no head boards on bed no soaps provided ni cleaner windos small yes you have a decent t v but thats it they want you to pay up front all the amount they get upset if you say no well the so called manager who is the owner there are far better and cheaper places to stay these people have three hostels so be carefull the noise at night is also so loud  the alleged gym is a laugh but there are two good ones not far in funchal no lifts either ive put some photos on here and by the way no view apart from buildings opposite
