A clean, welcoming hotel to arrive to after a long journey. We arrived late at night and staff were ready to welcome us. My partner even asked for a coffee on arrival and was met with great personal service! Comfy bed, clean room. Lovely pool very clean. Would stay again! 

A wee gem!

Rooms were nice; large and clean, no complaints. However, wifi is reaaally spotty - we were trying to organise the next part of our trip from the room but the internet kept cutting out. No hot water either which isn't too much trouble in a town this hot but still, can imagine this would be a problem for some. 
Swimming pool wasn't the cleanest so we opted not to swim in in. Also had an issue with a pretty horrible smell coming from the drains in our bathroom after a couple days however we asked to change rooms and the woman was extremely accomodating and gave us a further discount. So all in all, due to the really low price (booked direct) not too bad.

Several issues

We wanted to stay somewhere special as it was my birthday so after seeing the photos and reviews booked to stay here.  Noted book directly with the hotel as it is quite a bit cheaper than with booking sites (they have their own website in Spanish).

We were meant to be picked up, but despite being the only Gringos to get off the bus no one came to us saying they were from the hotel, so we walked.  The hotel is clearly signed from the main road and the area felt safe to walk around, but maybe not too late in the evening.  On arrival we were told a guy had been waiting for us at the bus station. 

The whole place is clean and has a great open feeling.  

The problems began soon after, the swimming pool was disgusting and green algae was all over it.  This is one reason we chose this hotel.  No apologies, no information.

The water pressure was terrible and there was no hot water.  On the last day we awoke to find no water coming from the shower.  We told the owner and were asked hadn't we showered the night before.  She said the water would be on in ten minutes, 50 minutes later it wasn't on and we left for our bus.  We had however managed to fill the hand basin with the trickle of water from the tap for a cold wash instead.

The wifi was poor and only functioned well in the reception area right by the box.  On our first day we had to keep going and plugging the box in as someone kept unplugging it.

If the swimming pool was regularly cleaned, the water pressure and supply sorted and a wifi box by the rooms this place would be five stars, but we couldn't wait to leave.  

Complete disappointment 

The reviews seemed good, we wanted to relax, the pool was the clincher.......but then we arrived. The good: The rooms are a good size, look good painted white and are clean. Comfy bed, towels and soap. TV with a couple of channels showing un dubbed American shows 
The Bad: Day 1, cold water only. Day 2, barely a trickle of cold water. Day 3, no water whatsoever. We would have liked to have showered before we left but not an option, staff response, 'You should have showered last night'. Wifi does not reach rooms on 1st floor.
The Ugly: The algae and slime infested pool. Perhaps good for a biology project but not a place for a human to enter! On day 2 they did empty and scrub it clean and for the rest of our stay it was slowly filling. This was probably why the water reduced to a trickle before stopping all together. 

They are building more rooms but need to maintain standards to keep the profits coming in. If the water worked and they put in another wifi router and maintained the pool this would be a 5 star place. Hopefully we just caught them on an off week.


What a disappointment 

I booked to stay at El Escudero on the 30th and 31st of December for New Years and wish I hadn't. First of all, we arrived at around 5:30am as we had to get the only bus available from Cuenca which was the night before at 9pm which I understand is slightly too early to arrive however we were welcomed and given the keys to the room with the only remark from the proprietor being that the price shown on our confirmation (80 US Dollars) for two nights was the low season tariff, which he sort of mumbled under his breath. We slept for around 3 hours, went down to reception for breakfast but instead were greeted by the owners saying that they never received confirmation of our booking (which is not entirely their fault) however there was no mention of this a few hours earlier. We were then told the hotel was actually closed and that if we wanted to stay, they would be charging us $160 US Dollars and we would be charged an entire extra night as we arrived early (which was also not mentioned upon arrival). If this had been explained to us upon arrival then we would have happily waited until they were ready to receive us. So at this point we were to be charged double the amount originally confirmed and there would be absolutely no service as the hotel was "closed". We decided therefore to search for a new hotel, which is not easy during these dates but fortunately we were successful. When we returned to collect our bag, we informed the owners that we didn't have enough money to pay what they were asking and told them we would be leaving. They then suddenly said "well we'll just charge $120 then" meaning that they were obviously trying to take advantage of our situation despite knowing about our lack of money. We said we couldn't afford that either to which our reply was a moody face asking us for $40 for the 3 hours we were in the room. During this time, we saw another couple enter the hotel who were apparently staying there too which makes me wonder whether they had been told the same story and just decided to pay the ridiculous extra costs or whether they were simply trying to take advantage of us. Aside from this problem, the rooms were extremely hot and were full of mosquitos. The hotel is also situated on a horrible little side street which doesn't feel particularly safe, especially at night. To be honest, I thought that even the original price of 80 dollars was way overpriced for what the hotel offers and therefore 160 is simply laughable and quite cheeky really. For those who enjoyed their stay here, I'm glad that was the case but I for one will definitely not be recommending this hotel and find it incomprehensible that such a place has been awarded with the Trip Advisor recommendation sticker. I also advise everyone to call ahead even if you have a reservation.
