I booked Hotel Punta Pico with my partner for the week of New Year's. We booked by email, directly through the owner, Pilar Liziola, and she offered what she called a "package". The package included and I quote "1 room for 2 people with ocean views, wifi, fan, and hot water in the bathroom 24 hours" and cost US$178 per night per room. Breakfast was also included in the so-called package. Problems started on the first morning. 2 of the 4 mornings there was no bread for us and I was told it was "our fault for waking up late." We were still within the hotel's breakfast time and I replied that it was their fault, as they did not have enough bread for the amount of guests they were accommodating. Still, at check-out, they tried to charge me for bread and milk!! They only offered eggs as part of the breakfast and we were denied having any fruit instead of eggs. In addition, despite that the hotel confirmed hot water in the room, 2 out of the 4 mornings, there was no hot water at all. They blamed the power company and the owner, Pilar, said that the area suffers constant power cuts. This said, for a US$178/night hotel, I would expect the hotel to have a proper generator; particularly, knowing that the area suffers from constant cuts in power. WiFi was another problem: basically, it never worked and again they blamed the power company while some of the hotel staff said it was because there were too many guests. Strangely enough, the WiFi network showed constantly, so the power company excuse was difficult to buy. The so-called package also "included a New Year's dinner" which instead of offering fish and sea food, which is typical from that area of Peru, the hotel served an Amazonian fish and ice cream, and charge for the water and ice that was consumed that night. We left the hotel one day earlier given the terrible service and we were denied to be refunded for the services not provided (hot water and Internet) and for the night that was not used. Furthermore, we found out that a regular night in the hotel costs only US$80, as stated in their price table; but the owner claimed that because we bought a "package" they were entitled to overcharge us. In the hotel's confirmation, the hotel also confirmed "kayaks, jet sky, 4 wheelers, etc." Only kayaks can be found in the hotel. The rest has to be hired from another hotel, 20km away, and because of transportation, they overcharge you. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone and I strongly advise to look for other alternatives in the area.

Extremely poor service and disastrous experience

Punta Pico occupies a perfect position on a bay about 10km from Zorritos. It's very isolated, which is nice except it basically forces you to eat there. The view from the room is just spectacular. The ocean crashes right into the rocks directly below the balcony. From inside, it feels like you are on a cruise because all you can see out the window is ocean!

The staff are fantastic. One of them speaks English but otherwise at least basic Spanish is very useful. Drinks are self serve and added to the same tab as the meals so you don't need to carry cash around. The breakfast is nice and the other meal options are extensive, although the menu is only in Spanish.

The downside is INSECTS. There really is no way to stop them getting into the room. The balcony light operates on a sensor when it gets dark and attracts them like a beacon. On my first night, I left the balcony door open while I was at dinner and came back to swarms of insects that made sleep really difficult. I was very careful to shut everything up at sunset after that but they still get in.

Still, insects aside, after 8 nights I was really disappointed to have to leave. I could never get tired of that view!
