In our 24 days in Japan this was probably the very best place we stayed in .  Super and beautiful family home.  Tai looked after us so well and gave recommendations of places to visits and for restaurant.  He gladly supplied lifts to all the restaurants which we visited in the town.  His mother prepared the most amazing breakfast every day  - not only was it a work of art but really tasty as well.  We really did feel welcome and happy here.  If ever in the area again we will certainly stay here

The house is a genuine Japanese home. Tai’s - and his parents’ - hospitality is amazing, which makes the stay at his house as a truly authentic and marvelous Japanese stay. In the evening, Tai recommended a restaurant, booked it for us and even drove us there, and back! Thank you for this extraordinary stay.

Great authentic Japanese hospitality.

This is the first real review I’ve posted after our month long trip in Japan - but it’s important this place gets recognized and noticed.

The owner, Tai, runs this guesthouse with his parents.  The beautifully renovated old house is a remarkable place in and of itself, but the service is incredible and elevates the place to another level.  The included breakfasts (cooked by his mother) are superb.  The level of service he offers is above and beyond anything I’ve ever experienced: he is incredibly attentive and thoughtful; happy to drive you wherever you like; full of recommendations; etc.

Our terrific room also had an upstairs area with a beer fridge and a giant projector and speaker system for our use (Tai’s father was a professional cameraman and made music videos).

This is a quiet town.  Don’t come here expecting the bustle and excitement of Kyoto or Tokyo.  Come here to tour the countryside (for instance with the incredible Satoyama Experience) or to drive up to the Onsens in the mountains nearby.  

Well worth the trip.  It’s best if you rent a car to explore the surrounding areas.

Best Stay in Japan

Very warm welcome in this guest house. Tai and his parents took great care of us during our stay. the house and the rooms are sublime. Homemade breakfast, we would have liked to stay longer in this haven of peace.

Little Paradise in Takayama

Tai and his parents have the most wonderful home and guest house. Tai drove us to all of our locations and picked us up whenever we needed or helped translate at bus stations for larger day trips, this made travelling around Takayama seamless. Always offering his local expertise and happy for a chat, I would come back to Soy Guesthouse in a heart beat.

Excellent, most relaxing and pleasant stay

We were on a 2 weeks tour through Japan with a friend and arrived at SOY GuestHouse for 1 night in Takayama, and what a welcome! Tai (the owner) came to the train station to bring our luggages so that we can be confortable for our walking in Takayama and then picked us up wherever we wanted in the city center; advincing us about where to go for a visit, to eat... he even bring us to the restaurant at night!

The whole Tai's family was so kind to us, prepared some tea and cake to welcome us and answered to all of our need. All of this in a genuine Japanese setting with a typical breakfast before we leave.

We're so grateful to Tai and his family for this wonderful moment, they deserve the top 1 place to rest in Takayama and we sure highly recommend it!!!

What a wonderful moment!

The experience of SOY is something we will never forget. We give the kitchen and service a Michelin star. The connection to the traditions of Hida Takayama are felt and preserved in the house. The interior and exterior is really gorgeous. The warm fire crackling in the the lounge with Tama-san (their cat) watching over the house, sipping on warm tee is so divine. The rooms are so cozy and comfortable. We had a great night sleep, following one of the best breakfasts we have ever had . You can have breakfast overlooking the mountains of Hida Takayama. The SOY house is also a cafe during the day. The city of Hida Takayama is a 5-7 minute drive away. Tai and his family offer a shuttle service to the city and back home. They offered us great tips on what to do in the city. We can't wait to come back in the near future. We love that this is a family owned business. They are an inspiration to us !

A dream come true!

The guesthouse is really a pleasant place to stay. The food is delicious and delicately decorated. Most importantly, Tai San and his parents really take a good care of us. Recommend for a good relaxing stay in Takayama. 

The guesthouse is quite far from the city center. But the owner is willingly to help with the pick up and delivery.

Pleasant guesthouse and warm hospitality

Hands down one of the best places we’ve stayed. We’ve traveled the world and this hotel is unmatched. The quality of service exceeded that of a five star hotel. Tai and his family are simply wonderful. He was our personal concierge, food, history and culture guide. From the moment he picked us up at the station, to him helping us purchase our return train tickets home, the care, hospitality and kindness was unmatched. The lodging is also outstanding and the beds were very comfortable. The home is beautifully restored with quality art and a calming outdoor koi pond.  The house is immaculate and our private bathroom was lovely.  The hotel has a beautiful view of the mountains. We were lucky enough to be there for the golden fall leaves and some early snow.
We chose to have breakfast included which was exceptional and the best we’ve had in Japan. To give you an idea of the level of care, it started to snow and Tai provided us hand warmers, umbrellas and arranged lunch reservations our outing. Then he checked in on us on later in the day for a pickup and had a roaring fire with treats waiting for us when we got back.  Wonderful stay!!

Incredible lodging and unmatched hospitality

SOY is a beautiful antique ryokan owned by a family who were very warm and welcoming. I loved everything about this ryokan... the interior was adorable, the futon was nice and comfy and the breakfast cooked with care by the mother was exceptional. Though the location is 10 minutes' drive from downtown, Tai-san, the son of the family kindly gave me a ride to and from downtown every day, so it wasn't inconvenient at all. If you want to experience traditional stay, this is the place to go!
