<Excellent> Cuisine
I think this is one of the best Japanese cuisine “ryokan (auberge)” in “Yufuin” town. During dinner in a private room, a handwritten "course menu" paper of staying date was placed on the table. A total of 11 course meals were offered in a reasonable time according to our speed of the meal. Each one was a delicate and wonderful dish. I think this cuisine deserves Michelin stars.

<Good> Location
Located near the center of Yufuin town, it is very convenient for sightseeing. You will arrive within a minute walk to the souvenir shopping street.

<Passing> Cramped and cheap rooms
The site area of the entire inn are not large because it is located in center of the town. Each room and open-air bath are somewhat small for the price. A famous designer in Japan is working on the guest room design and interior, but the used building materials are cheap, so I can't feel design goodness.

<Failing> Cost effectiveness
I stayed in most expensive special room and paid 1,000 USD with half board. But the narrowness and comfort of the rooms are not worth it.  In my intuition, reasonable price is 700-800 USD for this room. The cost effectiveness is not good, but I might make a reservation again next year only to taste cuisine.

Ryokans and Kaiseki is my ultimate obsession. Cherishable memories created our loved ones through beautiful food accompanied exceptional customer service is why I continuously live to dream about it.   

Being a family of four, we always wanted to take advantage of larger sleeping accommodations, local dining options and multiple bath facilities that remote locations had to offer. Souan was definitely not our typical pick due to the location itself but my mom's vague recollection of her positive food experience with this place about 20 something years ago was a major indicator for us to do so.  We were truly glad that we did.  This tranquil sanctuary is conveniently located right in the hustle and bustle of Yufuin tourist attraction area, only steps away from popular souvenir shops.  Don't let the humble exterior fool you. With the compassionate staff along with a mind-boggling kaiseki food experience, everything exceeded our expectations.

The owner and Kie (our server) and the rest of the staff members made us feel completely at ease by consistently providing my family with exceptional customer service.  The rooms were large and contemporary hinted with old world flairs.  The onsen was a bit on the small side but the spring water literally made my hair silky smooth and skin feel like a baby's bottom.  The dining experience was what literally flabbergasted us.  The food looks so simple but we have never tasted anything like this before.  From the creamiest tofu to the unique texture of the steak, every single ingredient caught us by surprise.  It's typically nearly impossible to satisfy my crazy grandma due to her unattainable standards when it comes down to food but she gobbled everything down like there was no tomorrow.   It's really difficult for me to express through my own words because all of these humble items look so familiar, but yet, tasted completely out of the ordinary.  

For those who are like us and looking for a completely unique dining and onsen experience,  this is the go-to place.

Best Ryokan Dining Experience Of My Lifetime

I requested the pick-up service at the train station and so we could place the luggage at the ryokan before check-in. The service of this ryokan is good even their staff couldn't speak much English.

We booked the 2-storey villa and the room was large. There was an outdoor onsen in the room which was my 4-year-old son's favourite! He loved it and didn't want to leave.

We also enjoyed the public and family onsen. As there were total 13 rooms only of this ryokan, we never met others when using public onsen and it was so peaceful and more enjoyable.

The dinner here was nothing to complain. All the dishes were delicious and presented beautifully. The service was excellent too. As my boy didn't like the frying food, which was normally in kid meal, I requested to have simple rice with fish or meat, or a bowl of udon as dinner for him. I was surprised that they provided such a great set dinner for my little boy with baked fish, steak, steamed egg, rice ball, udon and salad etc. He was so happy to have this delicious and healthy meal~

Our Japanese style room in the main building was more spacious than similar ryokans we've stayed in. It has all the amenities for room in this price range. The ryokan is 5 minutes walk from the lake but coming from the train station with suitcases you'll probably need a taxi or shuttle. Although there's no private onsen in our room, the outdoor public baths are of reasonable sizes and thoroughly enjoyable. The lobby rest area has an impressive Hi-Fi system with MciIntosh amplifier and Canton free standing speakers playing soft music.
We didn't have the meal at the ryokan, but there are a few restaurants within 15 minutes walk on the way to train station. The area is very quiet at night, most shops are closed when the sun goes down.

Great ryokan close to the lake

It was my second ryokan in yufuin(the first one was kazenomori).
First of all, if you are staying at this ryokan, you must stay in the private villa.
There is a huge difference between private villa and the rooms in the main building! In the villa, the bathroom and the living space with kotatsu are located in the 1st floor (with beautiful garden view) and the bedroom is on the 2nd floor. 
This ryokan has two public baths (men and women) and two family baths so if you are going as a couple or family, you can use the family bath. The onsen water quality was not as great as kazenomori but the location of this ryokan is near kinrinko lake and the main street.
The staffs were really friendly and The kaiskeki meals were also great !!
