We had a wonderful ski experience, taking hot spring bath every day after skiing was surreal. 

Weather changed very fast, we had a combination of sunny, raining and snowing days.

野泽滑雪加温泉，没有比这更美好的结合了。天气从晴天到雨天、下雪天，我们都经历了。都是自然雪，非常棒的一次滑雪体验。

唯一不足的地方是雪道变化比较少，不是所有的雪道都开。

when we arrived at the ryokan in the late evening, the reception was empty. we rang a bell, and out came a stoned face japanese man (probably in the 70s) who shouted 'DONT KNOW ENGLISH. DONT KNOW ENGLISH' and immediately returned into the back room. to say we were stunned is an understatement. We rang out again, and thankfully there were another kind japanese couple around who translated for us. 

Realised the ryokan had no inkling that we were coming. The receptionist (who were later told was the owner) pulled out some papers trying to find our reservation - butto no avail. Had to call Japanican helpline and after a painful half hour wait in the lobby (that was practically freezing cold), we finally managed to get into our room. according to Japanican, the hotel's fax system was probably down and they did not receive the fax saying that we had reserved a room. Really? at this day and age of online reservations?

The owner was completely cold. we were the only non japanese tourists and throughout our stay - he did not mutter more than 10 words to us, much less muster any kind of smile. we did not feel welcomed at all. kept refering to us as gaijin (to the nice japanese couple who translated for us) which was somewhat offensive and unwarranted. (that much japanese i understood). i've been to japan a couple of times in the recent years - this is the first time i've ever felt 

needless to say after a good half hour wait in the cold lobby - our stay was off to a rocky start. and our throats were filled with bitterness. there was a general issue with heating in the ryokan. lobby was freezing, baths were freezing. most of the rooms had no shower facilities, and we had to use the communal baths which had no heating at all. it was so cold that even our fellow japanese guests jumped straight into the onsen pool without washing.

Room facilities were ok. room was clean, couldn't complain. the only thing we found weird was that the sink was at one end of the room but the toilet was at the other end.
we stayed 2 nights, but there was NO service for the second day. towels were not changed and trash was not emptied.   

breakfast was ok, bordering on slightly mediocre, definitely not memorable.

we've stayed in quite a few ryokans in many other places in japan. most of them we were treated with royalty and felt so so at home. this ryokan was a sore disappointment, and needless to say we will not be booking a stay there ever again.

Non japanese visitors - avoid!

The owner of this ryokan is an old man who is super rude to its guests (Maybe only foreign guests). When we arrived, there were no one at the reception so we rang the bell a few times. An old drunk man who could not even walked a straight line came out slowly and yelled at us in Japanese asking us to get out. We told him we had a booking and he still asked us out and did not let us check in very rudely. As he could not speak any English, we spent like 15 minutes to understand what he was saying. He said we were late for check-in as we came at 10pm. He showed us a paper stating we would arrive at 4pm but actually we were not even asked about the arrival time when we booked the hotel on Agoda. I did not know where the 4pm arrival time came. The info of this hotel shown on Agoda is 24 hour room service so I assumed we could arrive anytime but obviously we were wrong about that. We kept apologising which I did not know why we had to do that.  We were the guests and paid USD 1200 for 6 nights! Even if we were "late" we should not be treated like that. But anyways he gave us the key at the end. This gave us a very terrible experience in staying in this hotel.

On the remaining days, this old man did not even give us a smile whenever we met. We were even afraid to ask him for help and see him...

Also he got a dog in the common area, which will bark fiercely whenever it sees people. It scared me every time I passed by the common area. People cannot avoid going to the common area as it is situated at the main entrance and if we need to go to the shared bathroom, Onsen and restaurant, we need to pass by it and the dog will just bark at us, which is absolutely. We lived on the second floor and could still hear its barking. You can imagine how noisy this crazy dog is...

Our room was not tidied or cleaned even though we stayed there for 6 nights. I am not sure if that is normal for ryokan in Japan. However, the hallway and the common area stink a little bit. Pretty irritating to be honest.

Other than the above, the staff are nice, food is good, Onsen is great. However, this hotel is still very disappointing. Treat it as your last resort. Book it only if you cannot book any other hotels in Nozawa.
