The lady who runs the lodging is very motherly who is always so thoughtful. She advised us to wear the gumboots they provide when it was very wet on the roads. The daily breakfast was way above our expectations. We had miso pot, apple slices, yogurt, bread, ham/cheese, fried croquet, egg rolls, sweet bread, etc. Everyday’s breakfast was different. The room was also spacious and cosy with a good heater. The shared toilet was clean. The bathroom has a large ofuro which is much needed in such cold weather. And of course location was most convenient, a few mins walk to the yu-road (escalator) to get to Hikage ski. They run a bread/ice-cream shop on the main street and work really hard till late. Highly recommended!

Homely ryokan

The very nice people who run this hotel really make the hotel special. The lady is extremely welcoming upon arrival. Gives you tips and maps on all local amenities. The rooms are quite large in Japanese standards. Efficient heating (Adjusts to room temperature). The breakfast is very good (lady also asks you if you have any dietry requirements. All catered for). The couple who run the hotel also run a bakery downstairs (husband bakes the bread, wife and niece works behind counter). Extremely hard working family, get up early at 6am to clear snow, work late in the shop downstairs. They really value their customers, go out of their way to help you and it was the best Japanase ryokan I have stayed in.

We stayed at Sawataya for three nights in January 2017. The host was wonderful! She showed us everything in great detail and was very welcoming. Every morning we had a wonderful breakfast prepared. We were sad that we were going to miss the breakfast on the last day, and left early to catch the bus; the owner surprised us by following us to the bus and giving us a breakfast bag of goodies! It was amazing to have such fine attention to detail. The room itself was very large, very clean, and had an amazing heater. The location is perfect; not noisy at night and super close to shops/restaurants, and a short walk up the hill to the ski resort. I would gladly stay again!

Fantastic host, great location, warm room, wonderful breakfast

The host was so thorough and accommodating. She went above and beyond our expectations. Went for ski holiday with my partner and was not disappointed! The room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing (Japanese style) and location unbeatable. Would highly recommend and stay again.
