Very poor accommodation in Kilkenny. Parking was a few metres from site and I was worried about the safety of my car. The room only had no breakfast facilities which I hadn’t realised as website was very misleading. No glass in room for a drink of water and shower was boiling hot with no cold water……serious smell of must in the room too. Didn’t enjoy my stay and left a day early.

Disappointing weekend  break

This place was absolutely perfect for us! Not that bad at all. Okay yes the gaping hole in the hallway made the place a bit chilly, but the lovely night attendant brought us up a rusty heater  willingly. The sheets weren’t the softest but for god sake for the price of it what are people expecting. We really loved our stay here as the staff were all so friendly. The location is so central. I’m a bit shocked at the other peoples reviews to be honest, none of them were accurate at all. No sign of any STDs at all only LOLs :) Will be returning !!!!!

Surprisingly Good stay

I am writing this review in the hope that others will see this prior to their booking. On arrival we found a fried piece of chicken underneath the pillow case. We were given one toilet roll between 4 people. On our way back to Troysgate we met a friend who had lost her phone and couldn’t get back to her accommodation, we said for her to come back with us as we didn’t think it would be a problem. We all got into bed. The night porter knocked on our door at around 4:30 am saying one of us needed to leave. We answered the door offering to pay more money or to take another room baring in mind the hotel was not busy. The night porter lady aggressively said we need to have the extra person leave, we said we cannot leave them out on the street and that this wasn’t planned. She didn’t care and within 20 minutes she had the guards knocking at our door. The guards arrived in and knew how ridiculous this was but because we had the extra person they had to make sure one of us left. The night porter continued to shout and point fingers aggressively at us. Myself and my friend left together so nobody was left alone. The night porter was not a nice person and wouldn’t recommend anybody staying in this place. It isn’t safe, it’s not clean and it was a horrible experience. Hope this helps out others before they book here.

Not safe, not secure, horrendous night porter

Where do I start- The bannister is hanging off the stairs. When I came back to the “hotel” early Saturday morning, there was no night porter or receptionist so I had to climb in the front  window. 

When one of my friends tried to go in solo( without the other people staying) the receptionist said no & some random man preceded to shout at her at reception, he didn’t work there, we don’t know who he was. 

Absolutely bizarre experience

As far as the previous reviews go we were expecting a lot worse than what we got. After lockdown they are revamping the rooms one by one, luckily we got a new done up room. 
Spacious room, comfy bed with clean duvet/ sheets and pillow. The bedroom was a good standard although the bathroom was still poor, a few loose tiles on the floor and the odd mould mark but nothing major. Decent shower, hot and powerful enough. 

Would recommend to lads/stags for a cheap and cheerful place to rest the head. Nothing special but does the job. 

No breakfast option but wasn’t a problem to us. 

Previous reviews might not be what the B and B might be in the future. 

I’d rate 5 out of 10.

Troysgate

I should have checked tripadvisor on this place as it's pure filth. The carpark looked like dump. We couldn't get into our room when we returned and neither could the night porter. Strangely our names and room were not on his list. During this we had to use toilet down stairs, the smell urine could knock a bull. I decided to hold onto it till we eventually got in our room. Bed linen felt damp and the toilet was dirty and dull looking. I kept my coat on during the night in a hope I didn't get a cold from the damp linen. Four of us in the room. Total price €200....to feel really unclean. No brekkie in that price probably a good thing as I would eat from a moudy, damp dirty place.

Filty and smelly

I booked my accommodation with more than a month in advance. Less than 24 hours prior to our arrival I received an SMS saying that they had to transfer my stay to an alternative premises. I found it quite suspicious that they sent me an SMS rather than a message through booking, the combination of the SMS and the fact that they gave such short notice would indicate that I would not have the option to cancel my stay, or if I did I would have to pay anyway. 

Let's move on. I booked a place for 129 euro, with parking facilities (that was very important to us as we were driving and we had a lot of luggage). The alternative accommodation we received was 99 euro and did not have parking facilities. We were told to park the car somewhere nearby (a 5-minute walk which can be a nuisance when you are carrying your suitcases) and we had to pay 5 euros a day. I am not going mad about the 5 euros per se, but about the attitude of the hotel which should at least have given us the total of 35 euros difference back, and didn't.

When we arrived in our new accommodation, which we were told is owned by the same company, we were shocked. The accommodation, which we were told in the message was called "the Waterfront" but had a sign outside saying "Castle Inn Guest Rooms", had  no staff working there, the lady who works in the café below the "hotel" apparently helps by handing the keys to visitors (she was very nice by the way), we got to our room and to our surprise they were still getting it ready for us. 

The room was boiling and extremely noisy. The window need maintenance as it felt as if we were in the middle of the road. Between the heat and the noise it was impossible to sleep. 

The bathroom looks very nice at first sight, but it lacks commonsense (or care)  when it comes to functionality: there was no towel rack (nowhere to put our hand or bath towels), the shower was very (extremely) slippery and there were no mats or handrails, plus there was no ventilation. It really feels as if it was designed by a blogger who is all into aesthetics but has no concept of safety or practicality. 

All in all. Do not recommend. Might be a good option if all you want is go to the pubs, get hammered and go to bed, but other than that I would not stay in "The Waterfront"/ "Castle Inn Guest Rooms". And I would definitely not book anything with Troysgate as they lack professionalism and care for their customers.

A place to be avoided

Having unfortunately had our booking moved by the original hotel we booked into to here for one night.Its hard to put into words the type of establishment it is....

We paid €99 for a double room- ridiculously over priced given the type of room and facilities available. Most Saturday nights the average room rate appears to be €89 on their website but yet we were charged €99 ( we couldn't argue considering we had no where else to go and were at their mercy for a night!)

There is no wifi. Parking is beside the guesthouse ( for 4 cars approx) but park at your own risk as you could either get blocked in by the chaos of the carpark or left with a nice scratch as you try to exit.

The room was cold, bed was uncomfortable and there was a sheer lack of hygiene in the bathroom with dirt on the floor  around the shower and a lack of basic items such as shampoo or a shower that fitted the actual nozzle!

If you could get somewhere else in Kilkenny I would strongly advise you do so. Would not return.

Basic beyond belief

I'm amazed this place has not been condemned! It really should be, there was mould everywhere and the bathroom in my room had a large piece of the wall falling off it. The walls as stated in previous reviews are paper thin, I could hear everything that was happening in each room. I was awoken in the middle of the night by a South African couple fighting over toothpaste - which is not the guesthouse's fault, I just thought it added some flavour. My room wasn't cleaned the second day. There is also no breakfast here, because the kitchen is "under construction". I was actually moved here from another property because of "construction" at that property. Seems like they're doing an awful lot of invisible construction. They also told me when they moved me that there was free parking out the back of Troysgate. I advise parking elsewhere, the ground is full of broken wood, nails and glass. It's also very likely you will be boxed in by some clueless guest. 

In terms of the positive, it's very well located and the man who ran the place was very nice. However, I would only recommend this place to someone I was trying to punish. Considering that I spent €89 a night on this grotty hellhole, I could not recommend at all, do yourself a favour and avoid it at all costs. Unless you want to experience what it's like to live in the house in Fight Club.

This Place is Terrible but it's Very Well Located

This troysgate house is unfit to house people. The place is so filthy and at outrageous prices. The carpet had more dirt and stains than actual carpet. The smell or mould and dampness was disgusting. Nasty place. I know people will always have different opinions but not this time an absolute joke.
