Fantastic
195 reviewsNestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, Nimmu house gives you the chance to experience, first hand, one of the oldest communities of permaculture in the world. Between the picturesque views of the mountains are orchards, fields of vegetables, livestock and a community that works together. Upon entering the property, Buddhist prayer wheels line the walkway leading you to a traditionally and sustainably built building with intricately chiseled doorways outside and antique wooden furniture inside. There are several clean quiet rooms in the main building, along with glamping tents between the fruit and nut trees throughout the property. Each room and tent has its own bathroom, which is stocked with a bamboo toothbrush, eco-friendly toothpaste tablets, and natural shampoo, soap and conditioner that smell divine, and you will find no plastic. Rooms are stocked with glass bottles filled with water, a thermos filed with hot water, a homemade blend of tea, coffee and a french press. Turndown service includes a hot water bottle tucked into your bed at your request for those colder mountain nights, and water is refilled daily. Meals are served out in the courtyard when the weather is nice, and in the dining hall as the temperatures drop. There is a beautiful brook that runs through the property, which adds to the ambiance of the impeccably cooked meals. Local dishes are served on a fixed menu, using local produce, and the staff take great care to work with any dietary restrictions or allergies you may have. My personal favorites were the veggie lasagna, the salads, the cucumber soup, the dal & khichdi, the omelettes, the fresh yogurt, homemade muesli & fruit. The chefs learned how to make cauliflower rice while I was there to serve to those on a keto diet. Between meals there are many regional sights to see, or you may just want to pick up a book of local fables, natural wonders or Ladakhi cooking on the courtyard table and enjoy some time reading on one the many hammocks hung between the apricot, apple and walnut trees. Last but not least, the staff. The hosts, servers, housekeeping and kitchen staff are some of the most caring, professional and personable staff I have ever come across at a hotel. Their kindness makes Nimmu House stand out against all other hotel experiences I have ever had. They made me feel welcome, they took care of my needs, concerns, answered all of my questions and by the end of my stay, they felt more like family than anything. My room was cleaned daily throughout my two-week stay. The waitstaff learned which condiments I prefer & I hardly had to ask. They even knew where I preferred to sit & made sure my favorite table was set. While most of the employees at Nimmu House are only seasonal workers in the summer, it is clear that the owners of the hotel take care of the staff, which gives them the ability to take care of their guests. The commitment to sustainability is top-notch, and while guests can have excursions in the mountains, to local Buddhist monasteries, thrilling adventure activities, visiting palaces and wonders of nature, a cozy clean room awaits at Nimmu House.
