If there´s one thing we learned backpacking through India it´s that your expectations will inevitably play a key role in forging your experience of a stay. 

We arrived in Amritsar a broiling evening in August 2017, planning to only stay two nights. We found ShineStar online and, given the very competitive tariff, were expecting the following: a passably clean room with private bathroom somewhere near the Golden Temple. 

Instead we were pleased to find:

- A room tidier and cleaner than places we paid twice as much for, with working air-con and a very comfortable bed
- The Golden Temple is a very short walk away (back entrance), and there are a host of typical dhaba (Punjabi restaurants) and shops nearby
- Cold mineral water, excellent hot chai and more are at hand with a very efficient room service

But much more importantly:

- The service was astounding. The manager, Mr. Saurav Yadav, was extremely welcoming and knowledgeable, and always ready to help us from the front desk. He spoke to our rickshaw driver on the phone, guiding him to the hotel. He helped us find the best dhaba and shops. He kindly fielded our many questions about Sikhism the Golden Temple - I still have a most intriguing book on the topic which he gave us as a gift. He went well beyond the call of duty, listening to our problems and sending us with his trusted employee to a very competent chemist when we got sick, and sending us to a friend that helped us complete our bus booking when we did not manage on our smartphones. 

These things really make a difference, and we ended up staying four nights. If what you are looking for is a simmple but clean and affordable stay with a caring host and excellent location, then look no further :)

Exceeded our expectations

Hotel is very good in reasonable price. Good interior and supportive staff. Room size is good and comfortable. We needed early check in which was granted without any extra cost or hesitation. Room had a little sort of smell which pervades in the room.. We tried some freshener, but no use. Hotel is good for families, friends, business or solo travelers. Good and nice amenities present in the room.

Good for all type of travellers

Don't mistake it for a hotel,it's a transformed house. Dont expect hotel type service but you can ask whatever you need,they would provide the same. I stayed 1 night over there had a good sleep, the bathroom was clean n hot water was available. Hotel is a bit problem to find out but if you call them and they can pick you up from near vicinity. Golden Temple and Jalliwanwala bagh is just 10 min walk from the hotel.
The Manager is a nice person and he even assisted me in getting me a auto. I would love to go there again

The Cozy Corner

Convenient to the Golden Temple area, and with good WiFi. However, service was unreliable and my room, which had a window only onto an internal shaft, was very poorly finished. Twice of the four staff I encountered spoke no English.

Barely adequate hotel close to Golden Temple

Acceptable, cheap and convenient place close to the Golden Temple. Good wifi, but dodgy service. When I said I was cold, a manager suggested I go for a walk in the sun. I had to ask three times for someone to fix my TV. ... When I left my key so my room could be cleaned, they lost the key. BUT THEY KINDLY LET ME CHECK IN EARLY.

Basic hotel convenient to the Golden Temple

The guesthouse is really in a quiet road very close to the Golden Temple. There are many street card food sellers nearby .. Bunty Cart sells good soya champ..You can visit the temple in the middle of the night if you wish.. So the location is good..Shine Star is called Bed and Breakfast but there is no breakfast. They should consider taking out 'breakfast' from the name.. Tea and coffee is available for very reasonable price at the guest house.. As it was March, there was no provision for hot water bath (no geyser, solar heater, hot rod).. The linen was clean, bathroom was clean but there are no windows in the room so it can feel slightly suffocating.. No mini soaps, shampoo sachets and towels are included but that is okay for the budget price. ..Even at four am, you will always get ricshaws in the lane outside to go to the bus stand to catch buses to Pathankot, Himachal etc..Wagah Border shared Qualis trip counter is just two minutes from the hotel

Close to temple, safe family run.. could do better

There was nothing unique or likable about the property and was very hard to find as no body in the area knows about its where about.Asked so many people, no body knew about, even my taxi driver don't know about it. one shopkeeper who was only 300 meters away to work hard to find its location and helped me. By then it was already 40 minutes passed in search of it. Arrived at guest house, signed the register and provide my photo ID, little young boy was assigned to carry my bag of 10 Kg to 4th floor by staircase. Open the door,bad smell inside as looks like it was not air ventilated for few days. I put the ceiling fan on even though it was already cold to get rid of foul smell.Toilet bowl was in a pool of water due to some water leakage which i have to mope every time before going to visit toilet which i complained to owner who was on duty in the next morning and felt sorry for inconvenience. He told me, due to renovation going on, there are few problems but he will try to fix it by my next visit which may or may not happen ever. Room presentation in the Expedia website was nowhere to match. Few Amenties e.g restaurant etc as mentioned on the website were not their. In my opinion, it is a basic budget accomodation good enough for people visiting Golden Temple from village side not fit for a person visiting from overseas. I checked in at 9.00 pm and i was only going to sleep for 4-5 hrs and asked for hot water at 4.00 am for shower as i was going to visit Golden Temple by 4.30

We only stayed one night here as it was a bit too budget for us but if you really want to save money it is very close to the Golden Temple and there are some nice places to eat nearby. Also the area is ok and not too busy due to the very narrow streets.
