Rural setting located in Lykos, nearly an hours’s walk along the E4 coastal path west of Loutro itself. This should be noted! The owners were very friendly and hospitable but you are pretty isolated once you arrive and you need to dine in their restaurant

A lovely experience off the beaten track!
As others have mentioned, the hotel is quite isolated and not that easy to get to. However, it is well worth the effort to go—once you arrive, you are met with a beautiful, clean and peaceful place to stay!

Off the beaten track!

We stayed a night here while visiting Loutro. The room was decent with a cute balcony - got a good sea view as well. They got a very nice outdoor terrance right by the sea - which we enjoyed sitting while having beers night before and during breakfast. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The only con was probably the hike from and to Loutro - we didn’t realize how long it is and how rocky it is. It is not a super simple path but it still went good for us (who are fit and in 20s and 30s). But I’m pretty sure the hotel do offer help with taxi/boat.

Pleased with our visit

I would not recommend anybody eating here. The food is very basic and you get hardly any portions on the side of your meal unlike other restaurants along this road which are more than accommodating in your choices and offer decent portion sizes. 
They also try to charge you for bread and unlike other places when you don’t eat it, still try to keep this on the bill. When questioned they said we still had to pay and when I said this was not right the change was flung back at me in a very unfriendly manner. The staff all sit round at a table smoking completely unaware of the customers so the service is very poor. Worst place we ate in Barbati would not recommend!

Not good

Extreme winds prevented our hosts from picking us up by motorboat from Loutro forcing us to take a gorgeous 40 min hike along the coast to the Taverna, making a magical destination even more enchanting as we passed sheep and goats on our way. Our room was comfortable and spacious with a terrace overlooking the sea. Our hosts were upbeat considerate and gracious. We dined on the outdoor terrace listening to the waves lapping the shore and feeling the cooling breezes. The food ,while not gourmet ,was very good, and the breakfasts more than adequate fuel for our hiking and swimming endeavors. Mostly, however , we just relaxed in comfortable lounge chairs and read. A truly relaxing two day interlude. Our Sunday departure stretched lazily into the mid-afternoon, which allowed us to enjoy a delicious zucchini and potato frittata recommended by host Pavlos. In addition, it was reasonable

Enchanting by the sea

Akrogiali is a taverna with rooms located in Lykos Bay, 20 min walk from Loutro where the boats arrive but one can get there by car on a difficult but definitely doable road. The taverna is on seafront but for the best beaches, Marmara and Glyka Nera, you'll walk or be taken by boat. The two specatacular gorges, Aradena and Samaria are must and relatively easily reachable as well. Our superior room on the first floor had gorgeous view, deluxe rooms looked much better equipped. The food is tasty but could be a little bit more varied, probably because it was toward the end of the season and during the pandemic. The hospitality from the brothers Kostas and especially Pavlos is exceptional, always ready for any help you might need. All in all, this taverna and this part of the island are a real gem.

The wild side of Crete

This was quite an experience: this tavern with authentic greek, cretan taste is in a corner of paradise difficult to reach and therefore isolated from the world. You feel inmersed in incontaminated nature and sheep and goats and olives are the touch of this landscape of sea and mountain of absolute beauty. The hikes you can make take you to beaches of absolute beauty and here you are in the welcoming hands of two brothers for whom the guest is king. I hope thy install mosquito nets in their doors for the sea makes an incomparable music and to sleep with that sound has no price. The restaurant is very good and the brakfasts were splendid. The landscape of that part of the island was the real peak of our tour. BRAVI Pavlos and Costas!!! I absolutely recomend it and with the brothers a staff of great simple adorable people made it even better. Ahmed, Robert and all the others will garantee you to feel at home in a remote place were the darkness of the night will give you as a reward all the stars, the constelations and the moon that make you think of ancient Greece. MAGNIFISCENT!!!

A place of dream out of the  madding crowd

We only stayed two nights and were very sorry to leave. It was too hot for us to walk far so it was a case of read swim eat sleep repeat. Our room was very comfortable with a balcony overlooking the sea and the food - much of it home produce - was delicious. Our hosts, Pavlos and Kostas, spoke English, French and German and could not have been more welcoming.

A wonderful away-from-it-all-retreat

Akrogiali is exceptionally placed. Generally you can only get there by boat. We arrived by car though the road is unpaved for kilometres and descends a mountain with hairpin bends and no barriers! (Bad weather had meant no boats!) It was well worth it. The small hotel overlooks a stunningly beautiful bay. We were greated by Pavlos who proved friendly and very helpful. His mother prepared lunch and the excellent evening meal of lamb and boureki. The full moon reflected in the waters of the bay just added to the romance of the spot. 
Our bedroom was clean and comfortable with a large well appointed bathroom.
We only stayed one night. The breakfast was very tasy and included in the room rate. If Pavlos offers an omelette definitely say 'yes'.
