Fare Suisse is a small family-run hotel in a great location.  No frills, but rooms are immaculate and the much needed air conditioning unit was quiet and worked well.  Staff are friendly and helpful.  Breakfast is simple but satisfying.  Complimentary shuttle service between airport and/or ferry or cruise ship dock is a real advantage.  Because of it's small size, we conversed with other guests, which made the experience even better. This is a well-run hotel that is perfect for a 2-3 night layover.

Small & Simple - A Great Choice

We stayed here for the day prior to departing for our night flight back to the states after our Windstar cruise. It totally met our needs with a comfortable room and a free shuttle back to the room. There was a bit of confusion about our reservation but that was quickly cleared up. There was a supermarket just down the street and we got ingredients for our lunch there.  Would recommend as a reasonably priced day room.

Served purpose well

We stayed here for 2 nights before a cruise and knew it was simply a "stop over" type of hotel.  We arranged the pickup from the airport, verified by email but they never came.  We waited, could not get service to call so took a cab.  When we arrived I mentioned it to them, they said "we had 6 people to pick up today".  I explained that they didn't reach out to us to cancel or arrange to come back.  The woman said nothing.  

The room was stifling hot, when they put the "air" on it was explained that it doesn't blow air, just leaks out cool air.  It was miserable the first night and only bearable the second.

The room was clean and there were amenities such as soap, shampoo, conditioner (a previous review mentioned a lack of these).  The setting is a great location although there is indeed a rooster that crows constantly and loudly at the property making it hard to sleep or have a conversation.

The entrance to the rooms had a private area with plants, flowers and a small table/chairs.  That was a nice touch.

We had some leftover (expensive) food after dinner and as there is no refrigerators in the room, I was taking two small, sandwich-sized bags to the desk to ask if they could keep them in a refrigerator for us.  As I approached Beni, and before I could even speak he rudely said "we won't refrigerate your stuff"!  If it was a matter of room it could have been explained politely.

We had also emailed ahead of time to see if the shuttle could take us to the ferry dock and was told that "no problem" they could do it.  When we asked about it, they said they wouldn't do that.  I explained the email and they told me to show it to them - their wifi isn't strong enough to pull up the body of it so they refused.  I then went and explained that we already had to take a cab from the airport and they finally agreed and had an employee drop us off.

You have to carry your suitcases up a flight of rocky stairs from the parking area - there is one ramp but then a lot of stairs so be prepared for that.

We had reserved this place previously for a cruise that was canceled due to Covid.  I emailed that information but noticed my credit card charged after the dates had passed.  It took several emails and phone calls to get them to refund this.  I was prepared to go with that being an honest mistake but now do not at all feel that the people running this are attempting any effort to make your stay as best as possible - except in trying to get you to sign up for their breakfast.

Know what you are getting here - a clean and safe place, maybe a shuttle, no cool air, no refrigerator, no peace and quiet and no help with anything besides breakfast.

Don't expect them to honor what they advertise

They said they'd pick us up from the airport in a marked van 1 hour after landing. They did come 1 hour after landing, but every other hotel was already waiting for their guests and their van was unmarked. All the staff seemed annoyed to be there. The room was mostly clean but the ensuite bathroom was mildewy, dirty, and smelled like sewage. Being close to the airport and downtown was nice. It was definitely cheaper than just about anywhere else nearby but it was a bit gross and not great.

Relatively cheap but you get what you pay for

The Fare Suisse is a budget accommodation with an emphasis on budget.   They will pick you up from the airport which is nice.  We got there late and ate at their little restaurant at 8pm.  They were out of pizza and only had fondue.  Out of pizza at 8pm which seems bizarre.   So the room itself is small but the bed is comfortable and the AC works well.  The shower works well and is plenty hot with good water pressure.  They don't have shampoos and only a bar soap (I had some shampoos from other trips in my suitcase).  The bathroom is small but clean.  The furniture is all wicker and seemed sturdy enough to hold our suitcases.   You can hear roosters at night but no realy road noise which is good.  We put a white noise app on our phone to drown it all out.  The strange thing is there is no TV in the room.  And to make it worse, wi-fi only works at the restaurant.  So no wi-fi or TV in the room, so at night there is nothing to do before bed.  I have stayed in many hotels and it seems wi-fi is pretty universal, but not here.   The breakfast was nice with breads, honeys & jams, meats and coffee and juices.  But they charge you $12 for it.   After breakfast my wife wanted to dry her hair and was told they have no hairdryers.  Most hotels provide a hairdryer.  This is the first one I ever saw that didn't even have one at the front desk.  That was very weird.  It was a very basic place and I don't know if I would do this on a future trip.  Luckily we only stayed for one night since we got in after the ferry to Moorea was closed.  

Okay with a few issues

Stayed here because of the reviews. We only had one night in Papeete and were not particularly struck by it being a budget property. 
We were happy that they provided transportation to and from the airport. The pickup did take quite a long time- approx 45 minutes. 
We agree with  another reviewer that the steepness to bring our bags to our room was an issue. 
Our room was near the area where the housekeepers congregate so we heard a lot of bottles being bagged. 
The room was very sparse, no shampoo or Kleenex. Bed was fair. 
Breakfast was sub par- had we been on our game we would not have paid to eat here but ventured elsewhere. 
When I asked if they had any water- I thought maybe I could have purchased bottled water- instead I was given warm tap water into my own bottle. 
Would not return.

Surprised by the reviews

Owners were gracious hosts. Walking distance to shops and restaurants although bit of an uphill climb going back. Budget friendly place to stay when traveling alone

Rooms are small but very clean and good enough for a solo traveler trying to stay on a budget.  The food on the terrace is excellent and Beni's french bread is outstanding.  

The only issue I have with Fare Suisse is the WiFi.  Unless your room is very close to the terrace, you won't have WiFi

Good place to stay on a budget

An economical stay in Papeete with free shuttle service to and from the airport. Located up the hill from the harbour in a sprawling complex, it is still possible to walk to the downtown and market. The basic room was clean with a bathroom (toilet, sink and rain shower). The outdoor sitting area of the room was nice and private. The happy hour specials and charcuterie board at the cafe/restaurant next to reception worth a visit.

Economy Stay

Everything was excellent.  Our plane was late but someone was still there to pick us up.  The breakfast was so enjoyable.  The bread was so amazing.  Fantastic cheese, there was banana chocolate chip cake.  I try to be careful with what I eat and if I eat sweets I am disappointed if it isn’t good because of the calories.  This cake was the best cake I have ever eaten in my life.  The only thing I can imagine is that the gods made it in heaven and don’t get me started with the fantastic coffee.  Plus plenty of healthy fresh fruit.  Every one was so nice and I will be back!

A wonderful place to stay.

Our second stay at Fare Suisse.  There's a reason we returned.  The proprietors are very helpful with arrival and departure from the airport and ferry.  They offer a place to store luggage when you have a late flight and even a shower that you can use so you can feel free to enjoy your day and still be refreshed when it's time to catch your flight.  On top of that, there's a lovely terrace for drinks and meals, reasonable priced and delicious breakfast and a happy hour to watch the sunset over Papeete.  Rooms are basic, but comfortable and a great value.
