My partner and I had booked a stay at the La Forêt campsite (Arcachon) without cancellation insurance because we were sure we could come. However, during an accident, my partner broke his foot and will not be able to fly (we live in Austria). When I called the customer service of Tohapi, after explaining the exceptional situation, no understanding or commercial gesture was made (no refund, no possibility to move the stay or voucher). As a result, we have the honesty to cancel in advance (no "no show", so our place can be resold) and we still have to pay all the expenses (including "extras" such as reserved towels/bedsheets!!!). I don't usually post this kind of review, but here I am disgusted with the lack of customer orientation!!! In short, we can't in all honesty recommend stays at Tohapi campsites!!! 🙁

Customer service is terrible and NOT flexible

Stunning scenery. Buzzing site with loads of entertainment. Amazing bar made exceptional by the team. Value for money. We had an amazing family holiday which was only made better by the staff and organisation. Thank you for a wonderful time 😊

Amazing Holiday

This campsite is set at the foot of the dunes, which are the perfect place to watch a sunset. Positives are its location, the size of the pitches, the much-needed shadiness of the pitches and the helpful staff. The sanitary block near us was not the most modern nor the cleanest (a bit whiffy!), but there were other more modern blocks in the campsite.  My main gripe is that although the hot water for the showers was plentiful, there was no hot water for washing-up or laundry in our block. Not sure if this is usual.

This is a campsite with entertainment, so there was the occasional drunken shout in the early hours, and on one of the two days we were there, children were awake at 7am shouting. Not the fault of the campsite, and I'm sure any campsite on the dunes will have kids being excited early.

As another reviewer has mentioned, it is easy to get one's car stuck in the sand. Luckily for us another camper kindly explained the technique when he saw us about to park.

The shop is very expensive, but there is a supermarket about 10 mins drive towards Arcachon.

Fantastic location, nice and shady, large pitches.

So the positives first: this place is right at the foot of the dune du pilat and even has a ladder to help you climb it which is well worth doing especially at sunset.

There is a large decked area at the top of the site which is clean and well staffed with a restaurant, bar and shop. This area holds yoga classes and evening activities. There is also a pool with another large decking area for sunbathing. The kids club looked well run and popular and the play and sports areas were well maintained. There is even a mini golf course and a spa wellness centre. The staff are friendly and have excellent English.

Sounds great right? Sadly, this is what my Grandma would call a classic case of “all coat and no knickers” - they have all of the frills but none of the basics. 

The pitches, which are demarcated, are tiny and those closest to the dune are not marked at all and so are completely irregular in size - all for the same price. The latter also have no parking as they are on the sand and you will get your car stuck. This is clearly something the front desk staff don’t tell anyone as in 3 days we saw 5 people get stuck. Luckily, there is a rusty sheet of metal matting to help you get out... eventually.

The showers are “cleaned” daily but this is lack lustre at best - they smell and are dirty (yes, I know you’re right by a dune but I don’t mean sandy, I mean dirty). There is plenty of toilet paper in the locked storage cupboards, sadly, none of this made it into the toilets during our 3 day stay so don’t forget to bring your own. These to smell awful and are often messy as there are no seats so people squat and miss. 

Overall, a shame because with all its frills, this place has potential but misunderstands the basics are far more important to most campers than a spa. Would be nice to have clean fasilities for the many rather than flashy add-ons for the few. Really needs some senior staff on site to oversee as it is currently run by holiday jobbing students who a friendly but ultimately don’t care about the state of the place.

Would highly recommend, fantastic facilities for both couples and families! Very clean facilities and friendly/helpful staff! Would recommend taking a adapter for electricity, they only have the old style connections.

Great site! 

The site is excellent. Pitch and area well laid out. The dune itself is amazing a must see. Plenty of cycle routes easy going. Popular site so advise to book in advance. Will definitely visit again. Easy to find. Evening entertainment on site. Plenty of facilities available. 

Grand Dune

Rented a mobilhome at the camping which when looking at the pics should have been quite new....surprise to us that when we came in the place it was build before the '70 and probably refurbished in the '90. Disgusting of our and half of the lamps not working. OK no stress we thought...they will have a solution for this....and indeed a toilet potpourri odour can to make it smell nice again! 

And we had to ask several times to get even something done, were told it was our problem, especially as we only told them the next morning. It was the first option we had as the reception closed in front of us when we came the evening before.

Oh yes Dune du Pilât, right next to you is nice, but that is the only nice thing there....

Except if you are really looking for this kind of camping do book otherwise stay far far far away

Low light

We stayed in this campsite.
The good news: dune is great fun. Campsite is not too loud. 
The not so good news: the caravans are old. Ours had a leaky boiler and this was fixed after some complaining. We were not sure they really fixed it, so we left. The campsite of course did not care about the experience. 
Toilets are poorly maintained, the "pool" is well, more of a theoretical exercise. The coffee area is old and worn out. The staff varies between grumpy and cant be bothered. 

We found that there are many more good places in the world than La Foret. I would not recommend you spend your time there.
