I was visiting Chile for the first time and stayed in La Serena for the eclipse. Didn't have a clue where to stay so after a bit of research I chose an apartment on the beach rather than hotel. My selection of Jardin del Mar was spot on. This is a beautiful complex directly across from the beach offering great view of the bay and city lights of Coquimbo at night. Very secure with each gated entry staffed by guard. Convenient location to several upscale restaurants directly next to the complex as well as more restaurants and shops 5 - 10 min. walk down the beach. Paved bike path and beach walkway run the full length of the beach and is great for a casual walk, biking, jogging, skateboarding, etc. Complex offers beautiful swimming pools, laundry facilities, and friendly helpful staff. Apartment 1202 (3 bed/2 bath) was excellent. Very clean, spacious living area, super comfortable beds, all modern appliances, free WiFi, satellite TV, master bath offers jacuzzi tub and separate shower. Great views from the deck. I highly recommend Jardin del Mar, particularly unit 1202. I will definitely stay here again.

Apartment 1202 is Excellent!

The positive to this location is the excellent view, the good security and the modern building.  Unfortunately, there are several negatives.  There was dirt on the bedding and furniture.  The hot tub and swimming pool were closed when we stayed (April).  And this really isn't a hotel, it is a condo with no services or front desk.  So the first thing we had to do upon arrival was go to the store to buy toilet paper.  We were also given a defective key and had to wait for the manager to arrive to let us in since the superintendent could not open the door to the room.

Excellent views but no service

I booked this cabaña by phone but had difficulty in gettiing a written confirmation. I was tostay 6 nights and had to pay the first two nights using by credit card. A total of 660 US Dollars. On arrival, the cabaña very dirty, smelling of damp, fungus on the pipes under the sink, graffitti on the living room wall. When I complained to the head of reception she agreed with me completley and that my complaint was just. The cabaña would certainly not have been allowed to be open in Europe. As we arrive late in the vening in the middle of high season we had no option except to stay the first night. In the morning you could feell the damp on the sheets. Not pleasant at all! The head receptionist agreed to  refunf me the second night and gave me 30 Dolares back for the first nighht. Fortunately the next day we found a de luxe apartment in La Serena Golf, 7 kms to the north of the city, for half the price and a much better location. My advise, avod this accommodation. It isn't save for humans!!!

try to avoid these cabañas at all costs

   I recently went on a business trip to La Serena, Chile.  OUr hosts booked us into the Jardin del Mar cabana hotel.  Wow!  What a beautiful, beautiful resort!  It's across the street from the beach and each cabana is like a deluxe, private cottage at the seaside.  
     The staff are fabulous and speak some English.  The cleaning ladies don't speak English but will do whatever they can to help you.  They are also extremely honest and had to be convinced to take the tip money we left for them each morning.  Sometimes we would come home and find the money still there if a new cleaning lady came on that day.  
    The hotel has a large outdoor pool and there is a playground for kids.  There are beautiful lawns and lawnchairs in front of each cabana.  A big, beautiful restaurant specializing in beef sits at the front of the property.  Great food and atmosphere.    
     There is a free breakfast (included in the room rate) each morning and it is sufficient to get you started on your day:  toast & jam, desserts, fruit, juices and coffee, slices of cold ham and cheese.  
     The hotel has free access to internet and you can use their own internet in the lobby if you like.  There is a small TV and billiard room, but each cabana comes equipped with TV, fridge and a little stove. 
     The only drawback for this hotel is that is is quite far down the beach from any stores or the main restaurant areas.  Not to worry, there are some restaurants only a short 15 min. walk away.  They, too are fantastic!
