There were stains on the sheets, ants in the living room,and the whole house slopes to the sea.Although Jan and Jim live next door they never once checked to see how things were . They seemed irritated by my questions when we arrived . She said she would send me a package of information prior to arriving but I never received it . So when we arrived we had a few questions and I had to call . They seemed bothered by my inquiries . 

Balsam house bombs

We stayed 3 nights in the smaller part with 2 bedrooms.  Nice price. Reading the other comments i thought “oh no, what have I booked“ yes the house is older and you could feel that the living room goes slightly down, but we didn't bump into walls. The living room is spacious and our kids liked the different seating opportunities. The view from the living room and the balcony is fantastic and it's really quiet, so nice. It was clean (except the fridge). The bathroom is small, the rest spacious

Beautiful view and quiet

We spent a few nights in the larger unit of this house, which has 3 bedrooms, 1 washroom, 1 shower/washroom, living, dining and kitchen, as well as a small porch. 

Pro:
- House was clean and simple
- Use of the BBQ was great
- Great location, 5 minutes from Uclulet and 35 minutes from Tofino
- Each unit had its own small balcony overlooking the yard.  
- There is no TV and no WIFI.  This is actually a pretty nice change of pace. 

Con:
- The house was comically sloping towards the water.  The dining room, and kitchen, and washrooms were sloped in excess of 4 degrees.  This may not seem like a lot, but we all ended up tripping into the wall into the kitchen multiple times.  When condensation would build on our glasses, they would slide to the downward side of the table.  This house would likely be condemned if there were a house inspection. 
- This is NOT a waterfront rental.  You can barely see water through the trees, and there is no access from the house to water. 
- This is a duplex, with fairly thin walls and floors.  The three bedrooms sit on the living room for the other unit. When the other travelers were not quite, we could not sleep.  We were lucky on our trip, but they could have easily been lovers of loud music and late night drinks. 
- Jan and Jim, the owners were abrasive. They seemed frustrated at the booking sites (out of our control), and some Canadian and local politics.  
- There was no shampoo or conditioners provided. 
- There were not acceptable fire and CO detectors according to the regulations in my neck of the woods... just something that rubs me the wrong way.

Crooked house!

We were a little scared to stay here because the price was so reasonable we thought it must be bad.  We were SO WRONG!!!  The house is older and so are the furnishings but so is my home so we were all very comfortable with it.  I am a former maid so I checked it out and gave it the thumbs up for clean, it was.   We were 6 adults and 1 small child and we found that there was more than enough room for all of us to sleep and have our own space plus be together.  Three bedrooms, one king, one with two doubles, one with a queen bed.  There were one and half bathrooms.  The living room was large with four chairs and a futon.  The table large with 8 chairs.  The kitchen was okay, small but manageable.  We were there for 3 nights and will be coming back again.  The house is only a short distance from town, (less than ten minutes drive?)  The owners were incredibly helpful, one of our vehicles slid into the ditch and we asked to borrow a tow rope and Jim came out and tied it on the vehicles for us and helped. We were feeling pretty guilty that he got all wet and muddy crawling under the vehicle.  There were plenty of pillows and extra blankets.  We did bring extra towels because there is no laundry.  The kitchen was well stocked, pots pans plates, silverware etc but bring any special items with you, citrus press, martini shaker, lol! *we brought large pot and Teflon fry pan, wished we had brought plastic flipper etc.   The only criticisms I would have would be that when we first arrived it we detected a musty smell so we opened the windows to air it out and then only noticed the smell a few times during the next four days.  We did not realize that there would be no fresh towels provided after a few days, we should have asked but didn't, this was okay because we brought extra but if we were here for any longer we would have had to go to the laundry mat.  There were no cleaning items, we would have liked  a broom, vacuum, some cleaner and rags.  I would definitely come back, we found the owners to be easy to communicate with and very friendly but not at all annoying or in your face even though they were in the house right next door, we only saw them when we checked in and when we got stuck in the ditch.  Excellent value for a larger group or family.

affordable, clean and convenient.

We spent 4 nights at Balsam House and enjoyed all the comforts of home. After hiking in the Pacific Rim or Whale watching it was great to come "home" to a place where we could spread out, play cards, and even cook meals in the fully equipped kitchen. The place was spotless, the beds were comfortable, and we woke up each morning to a view of the inlet. Our hosts were friendly and provided helpful advice on what to see and do at the Pacific Rim. It would have been nice to have wifi internet connectivity available at our lodging but we were able to find service just down the road. These roomy accommodations are an excellent choice for couples or a family looking for a place that's not your typical bed and bath hotel room.
