I loved this place. Ilha Grande is an absolute paradise, but the downtown area is extremely touristy and getting taken over by big-name corporations. This hostel is owned by locals and is just outside the main downtown area, so it's nice and quiet, but close enough to go downtown for dinner. The staff are extremely nice, and very handy with Google translate! Breakfast was an incredible spread of fruits, bread, meats, cheeses, cakes, juices, etc! The room had a great A/C unit which kept us cool after coming in from a long day at the beach. The hostel also offers tours on their own boat! Mario took the three of us out on a day-long beach-hopping trip to 5 different beaches/coves for way less than a private tour from one of the tourist companies would have been! We were really glad we did, when we saw these giant boats full of dozens of tourists rolling up to the same beaches just as we were leaving them!

Affordable, locally-owned hostel!

I´ve enjoyed my entire stay at Mata Virgem and i highly recommend this place to all friends around the globe. Breakfast is excellent with fresh fruits and breads. I shared a room with a friend of mine along with three very nice Argentine girls and then with two amazing girls from Uruguay. Those young people full of energy added a friendly atmosphere to the hostel. It´s not fair to say that the hostel is a "bit far from city centre", once it takes 2 min to reach the main street and another minute to the city centre.

100% Mata Virgem Hostel

There were rats on the roof. As my room was upstairs I could hear them walking and making noises. I wanted to change the room but the hostel was full. After discussing with the manager he gave me a very small discount. I can not recommend this hostel. Only the reception was very nice and helped me. Also the breakfast is not good and the staff neighter.

Very basic, one of the cheaper places on the island, a bit dirty, very hot at night in the rooms, staff don't speak English but are friendly and try via translator app, our room (budget 2 person suite) was incredibly small and made two people in one room challenging

We booked last minute in high season and this was one of the only places with beds available, when we got there I realised why. The hostel has a strong damp smell which gets stronger as you climb the 3 flights of stairs to the 4 bed dorm we were staying in. The rooms and bathrooms ( and entire hostel) was filthy and I can't be certain if it was from this hostel but I caught a nasty skin infection that is passed on through bed sheets after staying here. It was roasting hot when we were there and the one fan in the room was broken so it didn't rotate resulting in only one person benefitting, however the fan didnt make much difference anyway! 
Yes it's cheap but I would avoid at all costs if you care about cleanliness.
