Pulled up short of the nations capital. Long day with great weather, punctuated by the odd unwelcome traveller pinging the face or landing into the chest hair. Grabbed the special steak with a side of chook. Icy cold schooners of Tooheys old to wash it down. Treated like royalty indeed.

Royal hospitality

We went for dinner as a group of four - with one coeliac requiring gf meal. On hearing this the two staff members decided it wasn’t possible to try and prepare such a meal ( steak and veggies would have been fine!) and made it clear they weren’t interested in our custom. Too hard. They weren’t friendly and we left to enjoy a great meal at another pub down the road.

My family stopped here for dinner and I swear the publican needed to be wearing roller skates. He was all alone behind the bar serving drinks, taking dinner orders and enforcing covid restrictions and in my opinion he did great! 
The 1960s prawn cocktail reminded me of my mums growing up and I loved it! There was a little confusion when my meal came out ( I got slaw instead of salad )  but I think that was on the chefs end and well it was nice none the less. 
My partner got a heart attack on a plate 🤣 which was pretty much all meat and said how great it was. My teen got a schnitzel that was massive and the kids menu was priceless!

Roller skates! 

Stopped by on the way through from Melbourne for counter lunch, had heard it had been renovated.....
Apart from a coat of paint and some new tub chairs facing the fireplace and some not seen before high seating chairs, absolutely nothing had changed. The menu was very limited; my fish was as dry as a bone but the batter was nice, chips not to get excited about and yet another chopped up concoction some pubs call salad. I'm a big person now and don't need my salad chopped up into little pieces. My friend's steak was small but adequate and accompanied by a large amount of something white with bits of green in it - coleslaw apparently. Travellers needn't waste their time or money.

Dont bother

After a lovely three day hike in the Jugungal Wilderness area, my friends and I had booked to stay the night at the Royal Hotel Cooma. We were tired after our adventure and we were excited at the prospect of  soft beds and flushing toilets. 

Exhausted, our rag tag group stumbled into the foyer of this hotel only to be met with Cooma's answer to Basil Fawlty. After waiting some time for this man to serve the two other people at the bar, he huffed over to our group, looking thoroughly unimpressed at the prospect of having to do his job. He asked us what we wanted and I told him that we had a room booked, he insisted for about three minutes that there was no room booked under our name. He then reluctantly checked his state of the art booking system, a rather haggard looking note pad, and conceded that there was indeed a booking under our name for the number of people in our party. It goes without saying that there was no apology for this mistake. He then asked us how many rooms we wanted, with a very confusing explanation on the detail of the rooms, for instance he did not explain which rooms had two beds in them and which had one. 

Throughout this ordeal this man made disparaging, homophobic comments about our group. He also informed us that we were weak and he had done the three day hike in a day with his grandson...something that I highly doubt. I went to pay and had to make a quick transfer on my phone. Whilst I was transferring the money to pay the bill, he was tapping his fingers on the table urging me to hurry up. I paid and finally we were given our keys. Throughout this exchange I was made to feel like a burden rather than a paying guest. 

The rooms were charming, our room had a delightful pink towel wedged into the window frame to keep it open. On the bright side the beds were comfortable, the showers hot and the towels clean. On the topic of towels, my friend's room was short one towel and when he went to ask Basil 2.0 for a towel, he said you should be so lucky to get one, and grumbled whilst doing the bare minimum.

Then later that night he burst into our room informing us that we hadn't paid. I politely reminded him that only hours beforehand I had the pleasure of paying $150 for the three rooms. It turns out he got our booking confused with another group...which I found surprising after witnessing the high level of organisation of his booking system.

I should note that the rooms were basic but clean and the bathrooms were respectable. The story telling value of the place is great, Basil's antics will be great entertainment for years to come however I won't be staying here again due to his rude and inconsiderate behaviour... visit at own risk.

Don't Mention the War: A real life encounter with Cooma's Basil Fawlty

We stopped in for a feed and a beer. The locals were so friendly even to a bunch of Brisbane supporters. Steak and chips was great. Cutlets were huge as well. If you want a good pub meal the. This is the place. There is a section for families as well. Friendly staff. Great first night of a holiday

Have lived around the snowies for the past 15 years (Cooma 6) and thought I’d grab a bite from their.
It’s a Quiet and clean Pub during the day.

Ordered myself a beef burger with chips and gravy for lunch.
The Meal was both quality and quantity.
Massive burger with thick cut chips, tasty gravy

It was in my opinion, one of the best burgers I’ve had for a while.
Completed the meal and was full.
Had a light meal for dinner due to,

Would highly recommend to others.

Enjoyably Quiet.

A very cute and old pub. Food and drinks were fantastic. Had a wonderful roast of the day. The room was spacious however it only had one powerpoint which was needed for the heater as the room was quite cold and nil other fridges/TV etc. Great spot for a cheap night before heading up to the ski resorts. 

Good value for money 

We stopped in here for a nights accomodation and dinner on our travels. Very fairly priced and only a short trip upstairs for accomodation. The locals in the bar were lovely and the meals were large and again well priced. We sat upstairs on the balcony for a few drinks before bed which was lovely. 
The decor of the place could use a little love and one big suggestion is to put fans in the rooms for summer as it was so warm and only a window with no fly screen we didn’t get much sleep. Other than that was cheap accom for a nights stay.
