This was a VERY strange booking.  The hotel is nearly deserted, the grounds are unkempt with cigarette butts and other debris, the "bar and restaurant" are totally non-existent (those areas are "under renovation" but there appears to be no progress,) the entire place seemed to be abandoned when we first arrived, with a slightly unsafe feeling.   

The skeleton staff, however, Malcolm and Billy in particular, were very nice.  Our room was dated but large, the towels/linen was fresh, the bathroom large with a strong hot shower.   

My bed was very lumpy with the bed coils unpadded and no mattress pad to soften them (and I've slept on all kinds of "international" mattresses, including straw-stuffed padding, and am pretty tough, but these unpadded coils were a little much for even me.)  The other bed was fine.

This hotel needs an entire deep renovation, and for the owners to take it seriously that they're running a business.   We felt like we'd booked into a flophouse, with the unfortunate staff doing their very best to hold things together.

I feel pretty obtuse (and CHEAP, I admit) that I didn't book another room before this, as there were clues that the place is mismanaged.  The manager, Jonathan, had asked for full payment in advance via messages back and forth on Hotels.com, despite my Hotels.com booking process with my credit card used as guarantee.   When I attempted to call the Plough Motel and set this up, nobody ever answered, no matter what time of day.   Upon asking Billy (who processed our CASH ONLY check-in) why Jonathan never answered the phone, I was told, "He doesn't answer the phone if he doesn't recognize the number."   !!!!    It's a BUSINESS, wouldn't MOST of the calls be coming from unfamiliar numbers???   LOL!   

I'd also written to Jonathan via Hotels.com, repeatedly asking why no one was answering, to to please guarantee that we'd still have a room, etc.   No response.   (We had "Plan B" to squeeze in with the university student we were visiting, which maybe would have worked out smarter, although less comfortably, duh.)

Also, I got this message the morning of the day we were checking in:  
"Hello this is the plough motel
Our card machne is down at the moment
Could you plaese bring cash on arrival
please feel free to call us on 01782987899."   

Hello.  Right then we tried to find another room, but Stoke-on-Trent motels were fully booked by then, or ridiculously expensive.  And what good would it  have been to try and call a number that would NOT answer? 

Oh, and as we looked on Hotels.com for another room, everything was booked up, including the Plough!   We knew upon arrival that this was a lie, so we asked, and were told that the staff was not able to keep up with maintaining all the rooms, so they only allow a few of the rooms to be let.  The 2 of us estimated that might be 8 rooms total, out of 36 listed in the property description on Hotels.com.

All in all, a VERY weird experience, although our room was basically OK, the entire series of events makes me think this place should be bought out by someone who cares about running a business, keep the staff who care, and fix everything, quit pretending that this is a real hotel.   The property has GREAT potential, good structure so far as we can tell, could be charming.   Instead, this place is nearly decrepit, and has an unsafe feeling that the hotel is going under and about ready to shut down.

Absolutely shocking. We’d booked two rooms a week previous to our stay online. The money had been taken out of our accounts like we expected and ready for our arrival. A six hour journey later we found that the motel had been shut for many months due to renovations. So we had been left with no room having paid for two. There was no information on there website or Expedia etc to state this. We were last minute searching for somewhere to stay which ended up costing more money and was a massive stress for us all after a long journey.

We booked in for new years eve as we were attending a function in Stoke ,booked two rooms at £50 each , oh my god the rooms are awful absolutely filthy there was no heating only a small electric radiator and no heating in the bathroom I honestly don't know where to start! The carpet in both rooms was disgusting and had not been c!eaned !Both rooms 
 were dirty and needed a good clean  I tried to find alternative accommodation and was prepared to forsake the hundred pound we had already paid to find another hotel but as it was new years eve it was impossible! We slept on the towels fully clothed especially after reading the sign in the bedroom that states the management is not responsible for any allergies or reactions you may have during your stay in the hotel!!!!!!!! What on earth did that mean??? Don't stay here is the advice I would give

Awful

Good for a place to lay your head... (even though we had to get the sheets changed upon arrival as the room was filthy) I'd rather pay extra and get a premier inn or something similar. Rooms are small, cold, basic, quite dirty. Staff are ok.

The fire alarm was set off at 2am. Car park not very secure. Weren't advised that the restraunt was out of service when we booked over the phone. Even though it's been being renovated for the past 4 weeks.

All in all I wouldn't go back!! 


Rubbish

My friend and I stayed at the Plough Motel this Saturday (09.09.17). I have been trying to contact them since we left but the website is down and when you call the number on the website there is an automatic recording that states you have dialed an incorrect number. I left an expensive item in the room and have been unable to contact anyone to let them know and ask them to keep it aside so that it can be picked up.The lights by the bed didn't work, room was cold although there was an electric heater provided for this. When we arrived there was a notice on the door stating that the bar and restaurant were closed due to unforeseen circumstances. The info states free wifi but this was also not available. The Motel was a bargain and was ok for a one night stay but would not want to stay there again.
