Lovely cosy hotel with great staff and amazing food. Special thanks to Emily and Rezina who made us feel right at home and nothing was too much trouble for them.
The food was all freshly cooked with the menu changing every day, everything was delicious!
Lovely touch to have homemade scones and tea available every afternoon aswell.
Great base for walking and not far from Keswick if you fancy doing some shopping.
Thoroughly recommend and we'll definitely be back.

Great food and friendly staff

Beautiful hotel in a stunning location.  Room was of a very high standard with a great bed and powerful shower with lots of hot water. Relaxing in the afternoon in the lounge with excellent scones and coffee on tap is a lovely touch. Great place to chill out and relax.

Fabulous

We were aware that The Royal Oak is in an excellent location for walking with easy access to a number of varied routes. However, due to some fairly inclement weather, we spent our time chatting, reading and eating the most delicious, original food in a cosy, warm and hugely relaxing environment. 
It is without doubt an ideal get away to relax, read and enjoy the tranquility, no matter what the weather.

A Gem

Wow, what a find. 

Stayed during storm Isha, weather was terrible, welcome was warm. 

Spotless, beautifully and recently renovated small hotel.  Friendly,  welcoming and very hard working team, on the go constantly to keep the place spotless and guests happy.  

Evening meal and breakfast service was faultless. 

Cosy reception rooms with open fire, plenty of board games and well stocked bar. Try the Kendal mint cake with chocolate liqueur. It’s like drinking After Eight Mints. So good, we bought some in Booths on the way home. 

It’s dog friendly too!! 

Thoroughly recommended, can’t wait to come back, hopefully in better weather.

What a find!

A little gem in The Lakes. Staff very pleasant and accommodating, Even down to the maintenance man. Food to die for , credit to chef Dave Lee, who responded to my message on instagram about how to cook one of his dishes. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. If I had to moan about anything, it’s the mirrors, all for people over 6ft, being 4’ 6”, I had no chance 😂.  Definitely give this hotel a chance, the best we have stayed in The Lakes.

A Little Gem in The Lakes.

We had an amazing stay at this beautiful hotel. The rooms are stylish and calming and very well equipped. Food, delicious and original. The staff are brilliant. Stunning walks from the door. Just perfect.

Wonderful in every way

We thought this place was amazing. We stayed here on our 2nd night of a 3 night trip and our other nights did not even compare! 

We had room 23. The room was gorgeous, I spent the stay mentally redecorating my own home to match. We had the window open at night and listened to the river. Bliss.

Lyn was just a cheerful delight, showing us to our room and answering all our questions. After arriving we were encouraged to help ourselves to complimentary hot drinks and scones, this felt really special, seeing other guests and indulging. In the evening we couldn’t get a dinner reservation but after eating in Keswick we returned to the snug for wine and scrabble. 

I am already looking at the calendar to decide how quickly I can return. I don’t think anything needs to change! Perhaps an auto email to guests on booking to prompt dinner reservations? It looked delicious! We’ll book more hastily for next time.

Locally we went to derwentwater as the sun set and then the next day we had a walk on the path running alongside the hotel upstream until we found a waterfall where we paddled in the turquoise water.

Nothing else compares! Hidden gem. 

I visited the Royal Oak with my wife, Karen, this weekend for several nights and this place is a hidden gem.
From the hospitality and warmth of the staff who were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them; to the accommodation which was excellent with a very comfortable and equipped room overlooking the mountains.
The breakfast was well cooked and well presented and you have self service for pots of tea and breakfast cereals/orange juice etc..
The accommodation we found very well presented and homely with several snug rooms and a little bar area where we enjoyed a few drinks after a days walking the beautiful scenery.
We had dinner on the evenings we were there and the food was delicious and once again very well cooked and well presented by the warm and attentive staff.
We will be returning to the Royal Oak very soon.

Excellent hotel and service.

This is the first visit to The Royal Oak Hotel but it wont be our last. The minute we turned into the car park, we felt welcomed. The establishment was renovated July 2022 and it has been done very sympathetically to the area. They have kept its charm but give it a much appreciated update. All the rooms are just charming, from the bar area to the dining area and even the drying room is well presented. Our room was lovely and very very well decorated. Clean, warm, beautiful and then there is the en suite which is fabulous, tasteful and at last a shower which actually works perfectly.
We ate in both nights for dinner and we were not disappointed. The food is lovely. Breakfast very good and tastey.
Staff were attentive and polite and went that extra mile to make everyrhing perfect.
We have stayed in many places in the lakes and always come away disappointed until now. This place is a gem and well worth a stay.

Fabulous Hotel

Settled in the tiny village of Rosthwaite in the foot of the Borrowdale Valley (15 mins south of Keswick), this hotel offers good value for money, a friendly family run vibe, modern comfy rooms and great food.  

we stayed on two occasions, and find this hotel, a welcome escape from the bustle of Keswick, yet with all of the benefits of endless countryside and with a really cosy feel. 

There are other more expensive hotels in the Borrowdale valley but we don’t think they justify the premium to this place 

breakfast is in the rate and is excellent. Don’t bother going elsewhere for evening meals, the food is excellent.
