The pub is friendly and very traditional BUT the food not so good. I do eat at many Green King pubs. Portions on the small side. My scampi could have done with more fries but the biggest disappointment was the chicken burger. The chicken was extremely tough and stringy. My daughter gave up in the end. Would have been four stars were it not for the food. Not cheap too!

Ok but could be a lot better

Lovely warm welcome from all the staff especially Rob, Samm and Jackie. Clean and comfortable room and delicious food. 
Ideally situated for access to Stansted and Saffron Walden. Large car park to rear.
Will definitely return.

Lovely 2 night stay

We have stayed here before and was delighted last time with our stay, we dont get to the opportunity to get out very much any more due to health however we have family near by and choose this hotel as right in the center of where we need to be.
On our return we found the couple who run this beautiful hotel are still here and this place is fabulously well kept and the staff are really help full and helped with our needs. The hotel bedroom we stayed in number was very clean and very relaxing, very good hot water and comfy pillows. Food was really nice aswell we had a table of 8 with our family members and they said how good the food always is in here now. Would like to say big thanks to every one who helped us and the women with the broad accent from Newcastle we think was really nice and made sure we had everything for our rooms stay.

Really pleasant family meet up

me and my partner visited here to stay the night on Thursday, We were greeted by the very welcoming member of staff behind the bar and swiftly shown to a table, even though we hadn't booked a table. We ordered drinks and looked at the menu whilst they were being made. The waitress came back with our drinks and took our food order. I opted for the gammon steak and my partner had the indulgent burger, both meals were hot and very tasty. The speed of service was great given that the restaurant was rather busy.  From the moment we arrived to check in, to the moment we checked out, our stay was fantastic. The bed in our room was super comfy and the pillows were top notch. All the staff we encountered were friendly, courteous and professional. Big thank you to Samm who we felt went that extra mile and really made our stay memorable. Bonus also that this hotel has it's own carpark located around the rear so it's tucked away from the road. I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying. We will most certainly be back.

i went to my car in on site car park to get out a jumper.
after locking the car and about to walk back to my hotel room i was approached by a female manager who began to question what i was doing at my car .she was accompanied by a colleague who had seen me out side my room smoking just the evening before.
The manager who approached then went on to say that groups of lads had been looking in vehicles the day before.
I was clearly stereo typed and believed by her to of been part of this as i was wearing a grey tracksuit and baseball cap.
made me feel like id done something wrong and put in same category as the group of lads that where trying to steal.it was embarrassing as i was only person approached when others had gone to their vehicles. 
was handled very poorly and ruined the experience. 
i will never re visit and unless others want to be treated that way id recommend avoiding the swan thaxted

This is a perfectly adequate Greene King pub/hotel.  Our room was comfortable even though the housekeeping was slightly lacking in attention to detail.  The location is excellent in the very pretty town of Thaxted. (note to those complaining - don't book a hotel next to a church if you don't like church bells).  We found the food was as to be expected  - pub grub and generally cooked well. Service on our first evening was fine if a little slow but we were in no hurry.  On the second evening it was virtually non-existent.  Drinks fine and food orders taken. Starters came eventually but plates not cleared. Very long wait for mains and then nothing at all. We waited in the hope that our plates might be cleared and we might be offered a dessert. Eventually we gave up and paid at the bar. Service at breakfast on both days was probably the worst I have ever experienced in any hotel. It was all but non existent, tables were left dirty and the young lad overseeing breakfast could not have been more disinterested if he had tried - spent the whole time looking at his phone! 
The decor in the public areas is looking very tired and, in places, is dirty.  With some proper leadership and attention to detail this could be a good pub/hotel but it feels very much like no one cares.

Average pub/hotel but could be so much better!

The Swan looks nice on the outside and the staff is very friendly. We had a room facing the street. The lighting was dim and and the room was shabby. The bathroom was tiny and there were no individual dispensers for shampoo and conditioner. The loud noise from planes, church bells and passing cars cars kept me up ALL night. Further, it was hot and stuffy and you couldn’t open the windows for air because the street noises got even louder. It was the worst night I have ever spent in England, a country I love and have traveled extensively. Stay at your own peril.

Incredibly Noisy - Did not sleep all night

Stayed here overnight before heading to the airport early the next morning. Check in was super quick and easy, with a lovely lady at the desk full of conversation. Had some food before we saw our room, served very quickly with food coming shortly after. The lasange is lovely!! Couldn’t possibly finish it all because the portion size was so good! Lovely atmosphere inside the pub, we felt really welcome. The room is clean and tidy with a generous size tv and complimentary tea and coffee. We really enjoyed our stay, wish we stayed another night!

Just lovely!

Stayed in room 6 overlooking the road. Our room was clean and comfortable, lovely bathroom with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was excellent, tasty and plentiful.  Staff very welcoming. Would definitely stay again.

Lovely break away

Popped in for lunch with my partner. The service was quick and friendly and my steak sandwich was tasty and hot. My partner opted for the chicken burger, he said it was lovely and that he would be more than happy to have it again.
