Everything about our day was superlative. The warm welcome, the fine period house, the picturesque Suffolk village with its moat and castle mound, the comfortable beds – the list goes on and on. We particularly appreciated how our hosts put themselves out to accommodate us in that no-man‘s land between Christmas and New Year. It’s not everywhere where you get to sit down to a meal with mine host (great conversationalist!) and his wife. And to step outside after supper and see the Milky Way overhead – that was something else.

A superb house full of interesting art and objects.  Very much ‘an old manor house’ with all that goes with it.
Caroline and Jeffery were exceptional hosts and the food was first class.
A unique experience definitely not the norm.  If you want something different Haughley House should be your choice.

Long read warning.
The house itself is my idea of perfect - properly *not* kowtowing to 'fashion', to 'mindless updating', to homogenisation (padded dining chairs, ugh). The furniture is proper, the flooring is proper, the floors themselves are as wonky as a seagoing vessel ... My friend and I had the twin room. The bathroom is a vision in 1980s blue - I *love* it. The mattresses are firm. The TV is small so doesn't dominate the room. There's a pretty sitting area; plenty of hangers in the two proper wardrobes; luggage racks. The owners will set the heating/open a window to your liking (they're delicate sashes so I certainly wouldn't trust myself to haul them around).
We had dinner the first night. I'd been asked if there was anything I didn't like. Creamy sauces I said. We got creamy sauce! I found it amusing, and will eat what's in front of me. It was so nicely cooked (homely style) it didn't matter. The wine is amazing as the owners love their fine wine - and indeed have some when they sit with you at dinner - not necessarily relaxing, but highly amusing. (you need to be somewhat robust to stand up to the master's humour. Breakfast orders are taken the night before - not always, but totally understandable. Bread, marmalade, jam, sausages, bacon, black pudding and eggs are either home grown or local. As for the owners - you just need to watch Series 1, episode 5 of 'Three in a Bed (aired 2010) to get a flavour. Little has changed in 14 years - and that is a great thing. The master had just days before had a hip replacement and was on two crutches, but service went on uninterrupted.  As you can tell, there's a lot to describe about our visit. It was a rich, amusing and comfortable experience. I think all I'd change is to pop a breakfast menu in the room listing the possibilities. Otherwise - wish we could've stayed longer and I'd go back any time. But don't go if you want a bijou boutique with 21st century vibe. Places like Haughley House are getting fewer and farther between, and that is sad.

We were lucky enough to spend a couple of nights at this wonderful house. Excellent hosts, superb accommodation and delicious breakfasts. Caroline was also helpful in advising us where to eat locally. Food at The Kings Arms was very good. So much care was taken to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Would highly recommend.

We experienced a very warm welcome, comfortable large bedrooms and excellent locally sourced breakfasts including home grown ingredients. We thoroughly recommend a stay at Haughley House.

We spent 4 nights at Haughly House , Haughly,  in September 2023. The house is ancient quirky and beautiful. It is full of old family paintings and furniture. Our bedroom was large, well furnished with an excellent bathroom and a floor that undulated a little. Par for the course in a house this old! The hosts are friendly articulate and very good cooks. We took breakfast and evening meal at the house. Much of the food is sourced from the farm and the kitchen garden and is of good quality and well prepared. It was a delight to eat our evening meal with our hosts. We discussed all manner of topics and, though our views were at times divergent, having articulate, informed and civilised conversation was a pleasure difficult to find in our present times. I would unreservedly recommend a stay at this house including taking the evening meal option.  Dr Edwin Martin

We stayed three nights and were sorry to leave.

Haughley House is Caroline and Jefferey's home and is an historic haven of tranquillity, unless you should have something against the chiming of the hall clock (in which case be aware that the village church tower also houses a working clock!). 

We had reserved an evening meal for the day of our arrival and were very glad we did.  The food was wonderful.  The produce was all local and the soup, main and desert were all quite excellent.  I had brought a bottle of wine with us but need not have bothered as our hosts, who also sat down to eat with us at the huge dining room table, keep a good selection of wines.  The breakfast menu has plenty of choice and I recommend the cooked breakfast - all of it.  The fresh free range eggs and locally produced black pudding, bacon and sausages are excellent.  The tomatoes from the greenhouse in the garden tasted of tomato (unlike supermarket tomatoes).  The bread is home-baked and well worth having, with the cooked meal or the home-made preserves, again from local produce, except for the oranges in the marmalade.

Our room faced the front and had a comfortable bed, en-suite with shower, kettle with tea and coffee provided (and biscuits and apples from the garden), a tv, ample and easy to access electrical sockets, hair-dryer, cupboard with coat-hangers, chairs, table and a sort of "lazy Susan" bookcase chock-a-block with reading matter for every taste; classics, novels, non-fiction etc.  For bibliophiles there are more books in the ground floor library and sitting room!

We had come for my daughter's wedding and in the kerfuffle of leaving home I had forgotten to pack my cravat.  Jefferey very, very kindly allowed me to choose a bow tie to borrow from his extensive selection.  A navy with sliver paisley design was just the ticket - thank you Jeffrey!  

To sum up - highly recommended - a home in a home, away from home.

We spent 6 nights with Caroline and Jeffrey ay Haughley House and really enjoyed our stay.  We were made very welcome and the breakfasts were delicious.  There were extra little touches like the homemade biscuits in the room to have with our tea and coffee, and chocolates left on the dressing table.  Our room was very comfortable.  As we booked direct, we even had a complimentary evening meal which we shared with our hosts, and had the opportunity to get to know them a bit.  It was a very enjoyable evening.   I can thoroughly recommend a stay here.

I stayed here for 3 nights and just loved it here. The house is absolutely charming, as are the owners Jeffrey and Caroline. I particularly enjoyed the little touches like fresh coffee and love heart shortbreads provided in my room along with fresh flowers. Breakfast was amazing using local ingredients and home made bread. On leaving Caroline gifted me an Easter cake for my Mum, who I was visiting and Jeffrey gave me some fresh eggs from their chickens. I ended up feeling more like a friend than a guest. I would definitely recommend.

We would like to thank Caroline and Jeffrey for a wonderful 2 night break, and for sharing their home with us. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were made to feel more like friends than guests. The first night we arrived, the meal they provided was superb, from the canopes, the starter, the main meal and the dessert, all were superb. We had the room with the four poster bed, which was extremely comfortable, the room was more than expected, with tea and coffee provided, for an early morning beverage. Like all houses of this age, if you look hard enough, you can find small faults, but i'm not petty enough to point them out, as it didn't effect our stay or enjoyment in any way. I can only say to you both, keep up the good work and service you provide, as nothing seemed too much trouble for you. We loved your home, we  enjoyed your company enormously on both evenings, and your breakfast has to be the best, and believe me I've tried many. So to close, I would recommend this B&B to anybody in the area. And Val said "thank you" for returning her pyjama bottoms, which has saved me a trip to M&S. We look forward to catching up with you both very soon.
