Hugely disappointed with the food standard of this hotel. Overpriced for the level of service.
Only positive was 2 of the bar/restaurant staff, a young man who I believe was called Thomas & a young lady with very cropped/shaved hair who would both be better suited to a 5 star hotel. I rated it average as it wouldn't take much to make improvements but for the cost of a 2 night stay I had expected much more it's currently well below average. Food left a lot to be desired, can't be difficult to google a recipe and actually make something that resembles what's on your menu, The breakfast was excellent but the rest of the food needed a lot of help!

Back to the 80's

Stayed here 15 years ago. The place was fabulous and had a fabulous restaurant. Not so now. There is no separate lounge bar  area to relax with a drink. All the tables are set for meals. The food is now bar meal type which is not really suitable for a 4 star hotel. You have to order food and drink at the bar which is not very convenient if you want another drink with your meal. The breakfast was fairly basic, weak filter coffee, only one type of tea. No cold meat or cheese. A bowl of defrosted berries was the fruit choice or unripe plums. Had much better breakfast in other cheaper hotels in the Lake District.
The bedroom was quite modern but there was a shower curtain in the bathroom which sticks to you and results in water all over the floor. Bathrooms need upgrading.
Overall dissapointing considering the price.

Gone downhill

What a great time away with attentive staff and excellent food. Lovely room with a brilliant view over the lake. Extensive choice of food on the dinner menu which was all really well presented. Thanks for a great stay.

Excellent two night break

Ate here at the end of a day in Ambleside. Initial impressions were good as it’s a nice place to sit. However our overall experience didn’t match the price. The restaurant was quiet at first and the staff were standing around nearby which felt a little intrusive. It was as if they were watching and waiting for something to do resulting in one member of staff trying to remove my starter before I’d finished it. At the same time, you have to order everything at the bar which is inconvenient when you want another drink with your meal. The starters were nice but quite small. The Thai red curries were ok but heavily spiced and to be honest were no better than a decent ready meal. The dessert was very small. By the end of the meal, the restaurant was busier resulting in our main course plates still being on the table throughout our dessert!
If this was a cheaper pub I would have given a higher rating but it just didn’t live up to the prices.

Overpriced

Last minute I night stay to celebrate wedding anniversary. Stayed 5 years ago when hotel was part of English Lakes group, it has not changed much since then - some new outside furniture was all I noticed . And this is the reason for 4 not 5! Location, food and staff all great. And this is a great dog friendly hotel in the true sense that dogs can eat and stay with you in bar area and staff actively welcome them - which was one of the reasons for our return visit. Room 30 which is wheelchair accessible - just - (not for someone who is not independent as bath only and shower is fixed head) was ok. Comfy bed, nice view, convenient if you are wheelchair user. But stained carpet, rusty trims and grubby grout and cracked floor tiles in bathroom. Paintwork bashed and carpet creeping out from under door plates. Think room is overpriced for its current state. Would stay again in the hope that issues with the room will be rectified with a refurb/refresh.

Enjoyable stay but room for improvement!

We were welcomed by Cat, and we were looked after throughout the evening by Connor, Rosie and Charlie who couldn’t do enough to make us feel so welcome. 
We had a fabulous meal in such great surroundings, we loved every minute and can’t wait to go back.

Staff were fantastic

We are very pleased to have spent three day, two nights, at the Waterhead Inn, Ambleside.  We were welcomed, by Eddy, who was most friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Being seven in total, four adults, three children, it is not easy to please everyone, but we all found the location, the rooms, the bed, the linen, breakfast and evening meal, bar to be of the highest quality. The hotel was clean and well maintained.

more than just a superb location

We went for a lovely meal in the evening.
The waiter Louis was very polite and efficient.  He showed us to our table and  pulled out my chair for me to be seated. Water was offered for the table and we were checked on throughout our meal by Louis to make sure everything was to our liking.
We felt very comfortable and welcomed.
The meal was wonderful and of very high standard.
Will definitely call again when we are in the lakes.

Lovely Hotel and restaurant, will visit again

We had just hopped off a boat and decided to go into the Waterhead Inn on a whim, to eat. The barman kindly informed us that Table 6 was the best, as it sat in the bay window overlooking the lake. Magic! The confit of crispy pork belly was delicious! The service from Louis was excellent! Thank you so much. Mum was so cross that we didn't have any cash to leave a tip. He deserved it. Thank you Louis 👏👏👏👍😊

Great food  and great service. Lovely decor. Well worth a visit.

Local to the area, popped in for a couple of drinks and the staff were so lovely and kind. Rosie in particular was an angel! I had a feminine problem and without hesitation she helped me out, and discreetly gave me the necessary items. Can't thank her enough.
